As someone who's a mod on other forums, the perception is always that you either aren't doing anything or are doing too much — generally both at once from different people, in fact.

That said, there's definitely an issue about things not getting done, including reported spam threads and flamewars not being handled for days.

I'll reply to you, Aeladrine! :D <3

The Griefing/Issues Mass Thread was my idea - sort of like the Rant Thread, you can isolate the grief and debates that stem from those boards into one big board, slap some rules on it, and there you have it. Honestly, it could probably be dumped straight into the Rant Thread(I've seen a few people leave a short, concise post about being griefed there and leave it at that, which I think is a good idea) but I honestly worry that it wouldn't work because a)it'd flood the poor board pretty badly and b)I get the feeling that people want sympathy and empathy directed towards them specifically for their loss - which can be hard to get on the Rant thread because it moves so fast - which is why the threads pop up in the first place. It's safe to say that we all share your pain when you lose a pet, but I think the repeated "I am so [miserable/angry] this horrible [derogatory term] just killed [name of rare/me] [x amount of times] [before I could tame/while I was taming] and WoW sucks because [it's too crowded/GM's gave me a default response/the griefer is still there]." posts are kind of darkening the mood. I'm fairly sure there are camp threads still being put up...but they're quickly overshadowed by the problem threads, unfortunately.

We're certainly going through a rough patch.

Honestly I'm tired of "OMG I KILL RARES EVERYONE HATES ME" brought up when ... no one really even mentions it. I'll just thank my stars not to be camping one you run up on. o_o

Honestly I don't think I've seen anyone here claim to kill rares that someone's camping.

YAY A REPLY :D
Yeah, I'm of the same mindset about it. Honestly, I just don't look at those topics anymore. I've been sticking to the Off-Topic board since 4.2 came out.

And we most definitely are having a rough patch! The real problems (or at least the ones that have been effecting the entire forum) started shortly before 4.2 came out and haven't died down since. :1

/ineffective and lame post because idek why. I'm not in the mood to be useful. That's kind of a first.

One thing to consider about all this is that we have a rather uniquely stressful situation for taming new rares in 4.2. The only thing that comes close is the Sholazar Trio back in Wrath. There has never been such a large concentration of rares at a new daily quest hub, and for the most part they are highly visible from far away as well.

I'm pretty sure in a couple of months, when the Molten Front is old news, the forums will once again be a much calmer place.

I'm all for one big thread for these "oh noes someone killed the rare I want" threads the amount is getting rather silly. Today I saw the whole first page of new posts section filled with those kinds of ones.

Yeah. It's frustrating and sad, especially since the majority of them are midtame kills or someone running around going "LOL HUNTERS" :/ I am all for support but maybe limiting the threads might be wise.

Yeah. Something like the Rant thread would be for the best. I'm tempted to go make it myself, but I think it'd be better if Mania did.

I just want to point out that just because there's a designated thread for something - anything - it doesn't mean people are actually going to use it. We saw this happen with the 4.2 tames thread. Sure, a LOT of people have posted there, but there are still a good number of "YAY I GOT <x>" threads because everyone wants to show off their pets and have people comment on their joy. Which is understandable, really; they're proud of their pets.

It would be the same way even with a rant thread, for the reasons Nub stated earlier. Mind you, it's a great idea and should be put into effect. I'm just saying that it's up to forumgoers to actually use it.

This is very true, Kalli! Hopefully it'll at least reduce the number of threads about it. Idk if there's anything we can do other than make that thread. We could remind people who continue to make threads about it that there is already a thread for it,

Theres not that much we can as forumgoers I mean why should they listern to us? We have no power. :S Hence why the mods should do it.

Since Moderator seems to be a bit behind on things as it is at the moment, I wouldn't hold my breath on there being a spare moment to corral people into posting in the proper thread. There are a lot of things we can do as forumgoers to make things better ourselves, but a lot of the time, the responsibility is tossed onto the Moderator or Mania instead. A little bit of responsibility on our parts would go a long way in making things work more smoothly here, but I guess it's easier to either complain or tell the higher ups to fix it. (I'm not saying everyone does this, just that that seems to be the general mentality of many forumgoers these days.)

(Adding this next part, since it was posted while I was writing:)

The forumgoers have far more power than you realize, Cowmu. As the Blizzard motto goes, Every Voice Matters. Every forumgoer's voice contributes, for better or for worse, to the general vibe around here. If we all decide to make a positive difference by changing what we're posting, then the tone of the forum will change with us. We had more vocal/visible mods before and many chose not to listen - we already know that leaving this up to the mods or Mania isn't going to really change anything. It starts and ends with the posters on the forum.

*nods to Aeladrine* This is one of those things that even when not always used will improve the quality of life around here. Maybe title it something like The Consolation Corner. This is a bigger sort of concept than just this patch.

I think the issue isn't that the Mod couldn't merge threads and regular forum-goers couldn't direct people there in the meantime. The issue - at least from what I see here - is that people believe we're not seeing enough of the mod to begin with, and that makes me think it'd be better to take the matter into our own hands and request a sticky in the meantime.

It certainly wouldn't be easy. But like Kalli said, it can be done. If enough people say "Please take your griefing stories to [x thread] otherwise we'll flag this for merging, thanks." then people will eventually get it. However...we, collectively, seem to listen very little to begin with - apparently some people on the forum take personal offense to letting threads die and learning to tolerate the opinions of others - which should probably be addressed before we can do anything...otherwise we'd just tear the whole thing apart.

I think the big thing to realize is that hiding under the skirts of a Mod is not going to solve any problem, because Mods are not unicorns and they cannot magic all of the bad stuff away. In the event that we have a lack of modly magic(as we do here), it's best to step up to the plate - that means solving your own problems.

In simpler terms, that means talking things out with people, learning to ignore problem threads and/or users, and possibly most importantly using common sense. We may not be able to enforce rules via the banhammer and fancy-colored names, but the community as a whole can put enough pressure on something to make it Law, for lack of a better word.

I still think the mod needs to be more active in things. Rarely do they merge threads that need to be merged or deal with threads that need to be dealt with.

I think this is pretty much a unanimous agreement. We know the current moderator situation needs fixing. Badly.

I guess what I was trying to say, though, is that we can do things to help keep the forums from imploding even in the absence of a moderator. If a bad thread pops up, flag it, don't leave a witty comment or a "wtf?" or a "this isn't allowed" - and let it die. Even if a mod takes a while to lock and delete it, it'll be at the bottom of the page if people leave it the heck alone - and thus your would-be spammer is getting less attention.

I can't really offer a neat way to merge threads sans actually merging them. Might help to quote your own post, move it to the appropriate thread and redirect people there. *shrug* It's horribly messy compared to a smooth merge, but you have to manage somehow.

Off the topic of pets I've noticed something else in this forum. There's a Lot of hostility going around. Like...butt tons. It makes my skin crawl when I think about it.

There's a lot of contradiction here.

That said, I think the Dante thing is cute and a fun RP device. Don't pay attention to it if you don't care. It's sad RPers catch enough flak.
