It could just be to say they are leaveing so that people don't start wondering why they don't post anymore.

My long experience as a member and moderator of a whole bunch of different forums tends toward the opinion that the quieter the departure, the more likely its permanence.

The only exception seems to be is that sometimes people stage a loud, dramatic departure in the hope of "burning their bridges" in the hope they'll be banned or too embarassed to come back. This is generally when they feel addicted to a forum but are having a bad time and have trouble quitting it.

Meh, ignorance is a bliss. Don't feed the trolls

If the person has an inappropriate/disrespectful attitude or instigating a fight = ignore
If that person continues and unwilling to back down = report to a moderator for temp/perma ban!

I wouldn't waste a second to these kind of people on the forum unless you know the person well enough to go along with trolling.
