Sneezing Cat (update)

Unread post by Finduilas »

Since so many of you have pets I have a question for you.
My younger cat Flora is sneezing, a lot since two days now. It got a little bit better since yesterday. She now has to sneeze after she gets up from a nap or follows me around in our apartment (so it's about once in an hour or less). It's about two to three times, then she starts cleaning her nose with her paws and it's over. I already cleaned the apartment, so no dust is around, I checked her immunizations, it's ok, due in dezember for the next vaccination. She doesn't act any way other than normal: plays, eats, purrs and cuddles. Her eyes are clean and fur looks normal, too. Her nose is not wet and doesn't run.
I give her some vitamins in her food now (she really loves it) and wonder if she only got a cold.
If it's not getting better until monday, I'm going to take her to the vet.
So here's my question. Did your cats have something like that sometime? What was it? Did I miss to do something?
I really pity poor Flora when she has to sneeze and want her to get better soon, so if you know something that might do her any good, please tell me :)

As she otherwise seems to be in good health, I don't think you need to do any special this weekend before going to the vet on Monday. Maybe some extra cuddles. :)

If its while shes sleeping (particles can accumulate overnight and that may be causing that issue) and following you around (particles can be kicked up by the movement, not necessarily dust), then maybe theres something in the air, something that over a few hours of stillness can settle down on surfaces and when theres movement, can be lifted... maybe a new smell? From a liquid like maybe an air freshener or a cleaning product? I try to keep areas that i use spray on ventilated till i feel that its dispersed so my cat doesnt breathe it in. Im at a loss of what else could be explaining it :/ She seems to be perfectly fine health wise from your description, all i can think of is that its coming from the environment :] I hope she feels better soon ^-^

It could be a little respiratory infection. It could be an irritant such as dust, mold, or pollen. It could also be her teeth. My kitty banshee was sneezing a lot, and it turned out that one of his fangs had been injured or had gotten a cavity and had become loose. When a cats gum or teeth become infected, it can also affect the sinuses, since they're in such close proximity. The tooth was extracted, and his sneezing stopped, though the hole it left was something he could whistle Dixie through until it healed up. :D

Best wishes for your kitty cat.

You might want to ask your vet if she may have a blocked tear duct. My rabbit had sneezing fits for months and we couldn't figure out why. She looked normal and didn't have a runny nose, just a bit of crustiness on her eye after waking up like we get. Once we got her tear duct flushed she stopped sneezing the next day.

Thank you for all your tips. I'm going to take her to the vet on monday, since it's not gotten better over the night. I want to have it checked out that it is not something I could have avoided.
I didn't use any new cleaning products or something like that, but she likes to sleep on the balkony a lot, so perhaps she got a little cold out there (not a very warm summer in Germany...).

I visited the vet with Flora today (didn't have a car yesterday), he checked her and found out, that she has a really nasty cold with Bronchitis (do you say that in English?). She got some medicine and vitamins to push her health up. We have a second appointment on Thursday to see if she got better or needs further treatment. By now she's sleeping exhausted on the couch, weather is really hot here in Germany (summer finally arrived), so the drive to the vet was a pain, and has not sneezed since we got back.
