Suggestion: Mounts as Hunter Pets
I know that this has probably been suggested before, but I figured that this would be the best place to discuss it since we're all pet lovers.
My hopes is that, with all of the new flying mount animations out there now, that they'll come up with a "Winged Beast" or "Mount" pet family.
This family would include Hippogryphs, Gryphons and Wyverns.
I've always wanted my hunter's mount to be his pet in combat also, so I hope someone out there sees this and agrees that it's a good idea.

I'd freak out if wyverns and hippogryphs became tameable.

Re: Suggestion: Mounts as Hunter Pets
I believe there was something said, long ago, about Wyverns and Hippogryphs and Gryphons having a very important niche already(mounts, durhur) and how Blizz didn't want to mess with that any more than they already have. I can't provide proof unfortunately but I remember it being said.
That said, in Lore, most Wyverns are viciously loyal to the Horde only and I believe Gryphons are the same for the Alliance. They have a great deal of intelligence - enough to know their alliances - and I wonder what makes drakes too sentient but not direct relatives of dragons who are capable of learning and understanding speech(that's wyverns, btw, although they share ancestry with gryphons as well). They wouldn't serve you no matter how much you tried to tame them if you weren't the same faction.
And on a base level, look at the models - they're huge for hunter pets, and scaled down they'd look absurd. What special abilities would they have? Exotic, non-exotic? Gryphons and wyverns only have three(moderately unattractive) colors, and the gryphons don't even have a real idle animation. Wyverns have some serious model issues - would you want a complete remodel? That would take a lot of time. Would they run on the ground like mounts, or fly like their wild counterparts? Would they be cunning, ferocity, tenacity? You realize that by devoting time to making these critters compatible for hunters you wouldn't be getting Hydras, more spirit beasts or new skins, correct? Just some questions to think about.
As much as I'd like to have a pet hippogryph for my hippogryph breeder hunter, I just can't see it working out. Those creatures are already doing a very important job in ferrying people back and forth on a daily basis. I think they have enough on their plate already. :(

nah, I Doubt that would happen.
But i wish there was a spell so you could ride your pet for a certain amount of time until your pet tires out, it would be so cool!

Kinda wouldn't work. Imagine riding a spiny ravager, or a ghostly spirit beast.MushroomHead wrote:nah, I Doubt that would happen.

Re: Suggestion: Mounts as Hunter Pets
I suspect whatever lore you're referring to might be superseded by the reality of the game. Wild gryphons and wyverns in-game are usually neutral or hostile members of both factions. And from what I've experienced in the game neither beast "chooses" its faction at all. They serve as mounts because they're captured (or bred) and tamed. Examples of this are present in the storylines of various zones. Similarly a wild member of these beasts captured and trained by a hunter would serve as a pet for this reason alone. A few (but not most) wild hippogryphs are friendly to Alliance, however these seem to be the exception rather than the rule.Nubhorns wrote:That said, in Lore, most Wyverns are viciously loyal to the Horde only and I believe Gryphons are the same for the Alliance. Whether these beasts make sensible attack pets for other reasons is a different point of debate, but personally I have no issue with it. Not as a convenient 'mount family' amalgam, however. Each type has unique traits and would deserve their own family.

Re: Suggestion: Mounts as Hunter Pets
Ive read that Wyverns have fierce bonds to Orcs and Tauren but thats from breeding the children of captured wyverns and their eggs, they're going through a domestication process. Hippogryphs, they are fairly sentient and they do have willing bonds to night elves but there are wild hippogryphs that are hostile to all races including the night elves. Theres also ones such as the Spotted Hippogryphs in Howling Fjord who im sure lore wise have never for 10 thousand years encountered an elf of any kind and would not understand one but the logic of their mainland cousins who freely join sides with races that well, for one cant fly, and two, ride them, and three, actually take them into battle where they stand a very real chance of dying as well as possibly having a mate die in battle but not die themselves (they are very strongly tied to their mates)
And another example, im pretty sure the very hostile hippogryphs in feralas are not after all these thousands of years, enraged by the fact the land was destroyed from the sundering and worn away by all those years of time and the invasion of other races like the ogres. Im pretty sure they're purley wild hippogryphs with no sentient bonds to any humanoid

Re: Suggestion: Mounts as Hunter Pets
Hence why I said 'most'.
I don't deny that some Lore has been shuffled around for game purposes, but I don't think I'd like seeing a nelf with a wyvern, I guess. I'm hardly one to talk, seeing as my favorite mount is my hippogryph(on my Horde hunter) but begin Cenarion aligned I think those are a little less...alliance-driven.

Re: Suggestion: Mounts as Hunter Pets
the black war wolves can be tamed by alliance... sure they belong to fel orcs that are not aligned with horde or ally but its the same idea.. the model was designed for horde only mounts (and i think it was accidental but they decided not to change cause it wasnt worth the trouble and the complaints that would follow with)

Re: Suggestion: Mounts as Hunter Pets
You explained it yourself right there - those worgs belong to the Fel Horde, not Thrall's Horde. There are always going to be exceptions to a particular 'rule' or idea, like tameable stable master pets or those dragonhawks out by the Silvermoon flightmaster and Snorts, etc. etc., so I'm not sitting here going "It'll NEVER happen because Alliance/Horde". My main point was that a)we haven't thought out anything for them besides 'oh I want this so bad!', b)those particular beasts already have a -great- deal of responsibility as mounts for the Horde and Alliance and c)we'll just be wanting something else in a week anyway.Xakaal wrote:the black war wolves can be tamed by alliance... sure they belong to fel orcs that are not aligned with horde or ally but its the same idea.. the model was designed for horde only mounts (and i think it was accidental but they decided not to change cause it wasnt worth the trouble and the complaints that would follow with)
