I had a quest turn in at Ratchet and as I flew over my curiosity made me look down to see if Humar was there. I didn't see him. Once I landed I saw another level 52 hunter (I'm only level 31) mount up and take off. I instantly thought he may be after Humar so I gave chase just for the fun of it. Oddly enough I got close to where the lion prides are and there wasn't a single humanoid in sight. I rode over and sure enough there he was in all his majesticness. Humar! I instantly went into a panic mode of sorts and put a hunters mark on him. I stood there in contemplation. After all .............. in two years or more this was only my second time seeing him in the wild (my first time was when I stumbled upon him with my primary hunter char at level 45) and I had my beloved Strider "Blue" who's been with me since level 20 and my my she was not easy to get. Further paranoia set in and I did what I thought was unthinkable. I abandoned Blue. I didn't have the gold on me and definitely didn't want to risk running back to Ratchet to get the gold then stable Blue. So I let her go. Talk about a massive 'DOH' moment but I just couldn't pass up Humar because he's so rare as far as I'm concerned compared to the Strider Clutchmother.
So I sit here feeling very guilty but yet lucky at the same time for stumbling upon Humar. Honestly it's really odd. I was so attached to Blue. I will try to find Blue tonight. With any luck she'll be located quickly.

Don't be too hard on yourself, I think we've all done that at some time or another. At least you know that those pets will always be waiting for you. It may take some apologizing to Blue on your part, but, I think she'll be more than willing to forgive you.

(Edit: Grats on Humar, btw!!! Very cool kitty, I personally have never seen him in the wild)

A little update:

After about 20 minutes or so the guilt got bad enough that I went to the bank withdrew some gold and bought a new stable slot. I stabled Humar in Auberdine and went south to find my strider.
I get down there and she's not there. No trace, not even a carcass. I rode around a minute and came across a young hunter who was a level 20 with his pet which was a cat from the area. My heart completely sank. Told myself 'ask if he's seen /killed her'. Sure enough he killed her. Not once but four times over. I was ready to rip my hair out. This young and seemingly new hunter started asking me questions looking for help on a quest he was doing and why he cannot get his skinning above 75. I knew /know that the Clutchmother's respawn time is between 15-30 minutes so I figured I would let go of my spite (yes I had spite even though he had zero clue someone was on their way there to tame her) and help him out. He told me he last killed her about 5 minutes ago. I led him to where he could do his quest and gave him the information he needs. I said good bye and he says "Well good luck finding that bird". Thankfully where he needed to go was really close by so the trip there and back didn't take long. I make the circle of her spawn points which are all also really close together and still nothing. I sit and wait 15 more minutes mounted up, make the loop again .......... nothing. It's now been 40 minutes since he last killed her. I wait longer make a few loops ................... still nothing. By this time it had been just over an hour since he last killed her and I begin to feel very upset. I thought something was really wrong with the Argent Dawn server because she just was not there. So at 1 hr 15 mins later I logged off and closed the game. Waited a minute and logged back in and made the loop. NOTHING. Not even a carcass. Dismay was seriously starting to set in. I just couldn't fathom why she wasn't respawning at all. Two hours later and she's still not there. In my spite, dismay and frustration I decide to decimate every living thing (I really hate admitting this for some reason) in the area in the hopes it will reset something and she'll appear. After 30 minutes of killing every cat, deer and Tallstrider THERE SHE IS!! Like a light shinning from heaven she's there in all her amazing beautiful glory. I sighed and wowed to myself. I quickly killed the two babies and then started taming her. BLUE WAS BACK. Happy to be fed and no worse for wear. She was a really unhappy girl at first and even seemingly giving me dirty looks saying "Why mom? Why did you abandon me?" I gave some really great fungus and bread and a petting and hug. She was a happy girl.

I must say that I now have an even deeper love and attachment to Blue after this. Two and a half hours and she's back in my loving arms and by my side.

Awww, well it sounds like things turned out alright in the end. You got both Humar and Blue. Hey, you never know, if you had bought the other stable slot before and come back, Humar may have been killed/tamed before you came back. At least Blue didn't have a respawn timer of several hours! (Ok, so you waited two, but still.....) This way you got both pets!

I think it all worked out the way P. Dawg wanted it to.

Amazing the way a pixelated creature can work its way into your heart. I have felt so bad when I've had to set pets free (refuse to use the term "abandon") but I'm happy everything worked out for you. First thing I plan on doing with the extra slots is going back for my Humar...had to release him when I stumbled across Loq.

Amen. I laugh jokingly with my friends about how I know they're pixelated, but my god no one understands that bond with pixels like another serious hunter does. I've had nightmares in the past over deleting Loki. My god...I think I'd sob for a couple hours if that ever happened >.<

I find myself surprised at how few times Humar has been spotted. I personally ahve seen him about 3-4 times, just checking to see if he was there. However, I did have to wait 5 hours to get a hold of him, but he was worth it.

Maybe I'm a little odd, but I've noticed that I can't seem to re-bond with a pet I released. After I hit 80, I retamed both Timber and the Clutchmother, who I'd tamed and loved and missed, but it just never felt the same. I re-released both of them. Even when we get more stable slots, I won't tame them again. Does anyone else have this little issue or am I just being weird?

I had that with King Bangalash. Tamed him the first time and loved him to pieces. Set him free. Went back many many levels later because I was missing having him. Tamed him again and then re-released him because of not again having the space and wanted to try out another pet. The new pet and I just didn't bond at all. So I set him free. I went back to Bangalash again and tamed him. Only to find out third time really wasn't the charm. I'm not sure what made me lose those warm fuzzy feelings for him but I tried three times to keep him and it just wasn't there. I will not be picking him up again. He's better off in the wild with his females.
I also had this same issue with my turtles and the ravagers. The bond just didn't hold.

I've had bonds change, but I haven't actually tried retaming a pet I've released. I have *considered* retaming the red raptor from Duskwallow Marsh, but I've definitely lost the connection with my old buddy, so I haven't even bothered. :\

Ah, remember finding Rak'shiri quick and easy. The pair of us bravely head out to Outlands, ready to become heroes. A few levels later, and there: The black owls. I had to have one. Now, looking at my stables, I couldn't get rid of Midnight, my panther till about 56-60. No way. Rak was in the other spot, and I likely had a wolf or something that I wanted. So, I got rid of Rak, tamed my owl.

A few hours later, I realize....I don't WANT the owl. I want Rak'shiri. Good bye owl and its back to Winterspring. Recruiting the help of a hunter in the area, the pair of us start the hunt. Hour later, and I get the whisper: "Rak'shiri!" Quick easy tame, many thanks, and loyal Moonlight is back with me. The pair of us became heroes, and were praised in Northrend, where we fought, survived, informed that we were dead, (That dialogue in ZD where the Argent people say, "You're X? They say that you're dead!" will always stick out in my mind. Creeped me out. >.>) and braved Icecrown.

As for abandoning and rebonding, I had Midnight, a panther I abandoned in Terokkar at 63-64. I cried for abandoning him, felt so miserable. I killed off the creatures in the area so they wouldn't eat him, released him in a nice glade...Was so sad for days after. >.< Curse you, pixels! Why do we get so attached to thee?

Teigan, I wouldn't say you're weird, but I can't remember personally releasing a pet and then going back to re-tame. I think just about everything I've released so far has been a permanent thing. The only exception I can think of at the moment is my little Sheldon. He started out as a brown/black turtle from...(wow I really cannot remember the name)...that instance in Ashenvale. BLACKFATHOM DEEPS (whew, that took too much brain juice). Anyhow, that was the first Sheldon, but I ended up not really liking his color so I released him and tamed a gray/purple turtle from Dustwallow Marsh. I really liked this Sheldon, but after a while I started feeling all weird about the fact that he didn't "match" me, so I released him and tamed a green/yellow turtle from Hillsbrad. Well, it wasn't long before I started missing my gray/purple Sheldon. The green/yellow turtle matched me, but he wasn't the same. There's something about the gray/purple turtle that I adore! So, bye-bye green/yellow Sheldon and hello gray/purple Sheldon (again)! I'm definitely hanging onto this one this time. And honestly I love him just as much as the "first" one. To me, it's the same one. I found him swimming all by himself out in the ocean and it was almost like he was waiting for me to come find him again. :3

Now when it comes to Tetsusaiga, I think he's one of the ones that I couldn't ever abandon. If I did, I don't think I'd have the same feelings towards him as I do now. He's been my pet for five years and while I don't use him as much anymore, I still remember the good ol' days when he went everywhere with me. That one isn't just some white lion I could go retame, he is the one and only Tetsusaiga.

I do get attached, and I think that's why retaming doesn't work. I chose to give them up once, even if it was stupid noob reasoning behind it, and it was final. I'm much more careful about it now.

I almost was in the same situation as you when I saw Araga and yet I had my pink bird with me at that time, but I did go back to Tarren Mill to deposit my Fritz and was feeling good Araga was still there when I returned. My heart was going frantic though when between the trips I found her, deposited my pink bird and went back, fearing someone would've killed or tamed her before I came back. Fortunately though, there was almost nobody in Alterac as according to the General chat channel list.
