I dont really understand how i just made a point though... its ok to take a beast that is loyal to another mob then to take a beast thats pureley wild? Thats like me going up to an alliance flight master and taming their gryphon or hippogryph and vice versa opposed to taking the long trip out to some feral wilderness and taming one that (if we were to think as RPers) has never encountered a humanoid before

One argument FOR mounted combat would be that in the WoW RPG books (no longer considered true lore, but it was at one time), was that Mounted Warrior was a Prestige Class.

Size-wise, they wouldn't be too big. Look at a rhino, then look at a hippogryph, size doesn't matter :)

And as for loyalty, just look at Haalaa in game, alliance attackers ride wyverns. :)

I think it'd be extremely cool if appropriate mounts could attack in combat, but if they ever created the mechanics for this, I suspect it'd be more of a paladin 'knight' thing than a hunter thing. But maybe not. In the real world hunters weren't unknown for hunting while mounted.

Against the argument "loyal to one side"
As i recall the only reason the Wyverns that were in barrens are only friendly with the horde because the tauren showed they were there to defend the land, and living that close to Night Elves im sure some of them saw the Night elves acutally were healing the land. The cross over there wouldn't be a strech at all

(All data is from warcraft 3 dont know how much of the animals loyalty stayed from the one game to the next...)

And now that the orcs are hacking Ashenvale apart i wouldn't be surprised if they turned on their formal allies.

Mounted combat would not work well in wow as a general matter - what would be the tradeoff? Why would anyone fight on foot if they had the option of fighting from a mount? This is why the huns pretty much owned Europe back in their heyday - there IS no tradeoff; the guy on foot is just hosed. Instead, mounts were simply an across the board upgrade, same as Milanese platemail vs basic ringmail, etc.

To make mounts work in wow they have to be restricted to certain specific areas - which they've already done (argent tourney dailies, flying dragons in Nexus, etc).
