Subliminal messaging?

Unread post by Saturo »

*Sneaks in trough the back door*
- I have aquired the tape!
- Most excellent!
- They mustn't hear of this!
- Yes... Can you show us... The goods...?
*Opens backpack, and pulls out a videocartridge*
- Don't let them know I gave you this...
*Hands over tape*
*Disappears trough the back door again*

AHAHAHAHAHAH!!! Because he close-captioned it, it must be true! Oh yes, of course, that's exactly what I heard before I read the captions!

Subliminal messaging is one of those wonderful "IT'S TRUE IT REALLY WORKS" myths... If it works so well, then why the hell do we have armies? We should just be subliminally messaging the enemies into submission! ;P

Personally, I think she's not speaking English. Some "elfish" perhaps?

And Sphax, I agree that there are things hidden in movies (and in WoW). No, Disney didn't start it. No, it's not a conspiracy. Yes, developers, designers, cartoonists and directors hopped up on coffee and cracking jokes will insert little "in-jokes," naughty pictures, and pop culture references in their products.

OMG WoW MADE ME WATCH THE SIMPSONS!!!! STUPID SUBLIMINAL HOMER JOKES!!! (<- see what I did there?)

Edit: there's a website dedicated to them: http://www.eeggs.com/

There is a difference in hidden and in sublinimal. Subliminal is meant to prompt certain reactions in the audience, for example a desire to purchase a product, or alter their regular patterns in some way. Hidden is just meant to be tucked away for amusements sake. Funny thing is, most kids are going to catch or even care about those little things in Disney movies: They don't ((Or SHOULDN'T)) know what's being said or shown.

As for that being a subliminal message, I'm not seein' or hearin' it, and I have spent a LOT of time dead. *Goes to order another year of WoW*

I was making two points:
1) hidden messages exist; they're not conspiracies, they're jokes.
2) subliminal messages are part of a conspiracy theory - the myth that they work is stronger than actual subliminal messages' effect.

Read that first section on this page (#3).
Now far be it from me to claim that Cracked is an indisputable source for verifiable, scientific knowledge... but he does make a damn good argument (which, coincidentally, I copied above ˆ-ˆ).

From Wikipedia:
The effectiveness of subliminal messaging has been demonstrated to prime individual responses and stimulate mild emotional activity. Applications, however, often base themselves on the persuasiveness of the message. The near-consensus among research psychologists is that subliminal messages do not produce a powerful, enduring effect on behavior; and that laboratory research reveals little effect beyond a subtle, fleeting effect on thinking. For example, priming thirsty people with a subliminal word may, for a brief period of time, make a thirst-quenching beverage advertisement more persuasive. Research upon those claims of lasting effects—such as weight loss, smoking cessation, how music in popular culture may corrupt their listeners, how it may facilitate unconscious wishes in psychotherapy, and how market practitioners may exploit their customers—conclude that there is no effect beyond a placebo. In a 1994 study comparing television commercials with the message either supraliminal or subliminal, individuals produced higher ratings with those that were supraliminal. Unexpectedly, individuals somehow were less likely to remember the subliminal message than if there were no message.
I italicised the pertinent conclusions. ;)

1) Escapism. (At least that's the case for me. I'd wager it's the case for at least 75% of the people that play MMOs.)

2) The other games may have better graphics or gameplay, but the overall package Blizzard delivers is better. Insanely better.

3) I'll be the first to admit I'm addicted to WoW. (No, I haven't played since launch. I've played since Christmas of 2007, when I was in danger of loosing my unborn child. See point 1.) I also will be the first to admit that it's not because of anyone but myself. Honestly, trying to find subliminal messages that "explain" my addiction to the game is nothing but deflecting the blame.

It's neat, Saturo. I enjoyed it. But I have to say it's probably more like seeing faces in the clouds. We are wired to want to find patterns and "human-ness" in things. We are social creatures. We see faces in rocks, clouds, buildings. We've all heard recordings of "talking" dogs, that aren't actually talking, but we perceive it as that. Once, I swear to god one of my cats said "Why you move this?" when I moved his favorite perch. But he "talks" constantly and that time by chance the noises approximated English words, probably being colored mentally by me feeling guilty over moving his perch. Or, the supposed spirit communications in white noise. I think it's possible to hear what you want to hear in diffuse noises, like static. Or the res angel.

No, I really think it's the authenticators that cause the addiction. They are infused with crack-cocaine. :)
