Re-using names for pets?

Unread post by Sam »

I'm curious how many people re-use names for their pets. Either from pets who were abandoned in the past, or pets you currently have.

I started wondering this when I tamed the demon dog Verek on a whim. I didn't want to name him Verek, and was trying to think of a good name while finishing BRD with him. But my mind kept going to Paco, which is the name of another demon dog I have, one with the ghostly white skin. Nothing else I tried really fit. It was like the dog said "I'm Paco, I'm just red now, deal with it." So I decided that Paco can materialize in two different forms -- one white and ghostly, and the other red. It fits (kind of) my notion of the demon dogs as cadejos, which traditionally come in two colors/forms... though I don't think of mine as being good and evil.

I really like the red skin... I'd never looked at it all that closely before. It's neat when you can suddenly develop an appreciation of something that's been right before your eyes for so long. Red Paco is currently my favorite pet to run around with (despite the fact that the abilities Blizz gave to the dog family are less than exciting).

I'm definitely not going to abandon Ghost Paco just because he's got a new form. :D For one thing, he's cool because he's transparent and not very many pets are unless they're spirit beasts (and I think he's even more transparent than the ghost saber). For another, he's a souvenir or memento of sorts -- he reminds me of the fun I had running Kara with an old friend who no longer plays WoW. We used to do it a lot, just the two of us, and I got Paco on one of those trips and usually used him there too. So he'll never be released.

But he may obtain a new, temporary form as a black-and-orange Paco for Hallow's End...

So -- who else re-uses names? Do you ever give a new pet the same name as one you already have? Or use a name you've had before for a pet that you released? Do you think of them as the same character? Or maybe you just like the name...?

I've done that. XD

Like Deathmaw and Old Cliffjumper. The only name they'll ever get is Hudson, which I named after Gargoyles. They remind me of him.

I've had a few pets change forms/colors before. They like morphing. ;) I haven't ended up with multiple colors of the same pet actively, though. Sounds fun!

Oooh, I have this.
I have Bucket in his SB form, which is Karoma, Bucket in his Worg form, which is Lone Hunter, and Bucket when he possesses the body of a while core hound, the kurken.
. . . :U

I used to have two turtles named Panzer. My original 'Panzer' was a Mudrock Spikeshell that I bonded with. Then Terrorpene appeared, my brain went 'SHINY!', and I reclaimed him, naming him Panzer as well. After a while, the 'shiny' wore off, and I realized I missed 'oldPanzer'. So I got him restored and kept two 'Panzer's' in my stable for a very long time. One on fire, one... not.

My worgen just replaced one wolf with another one with the same name (Virjinia). I knew she wanted to tame Deathmaw at 51, so the tan coyote was only temporary.

I think my Sakki wins for how many times I've changed his appearance.

Sakki was a blue vulture back in vanilla WoW. He was one of my two pets back then, the other being Hahadori of course. Having a vulture pet has great fun with roleplaying, especially with my undead friends. =P

I released him in BC to try out new pets, but I always missed him. Retaming him again near the end of BC, he didn't just feel quite right with an old world skin, so I went on an adventure trying to get my Sakki to feel just right with me, an adventure that lasted until cata.

I'm FINALLY happy with the teal skin, and it's only fitting he's a ghost now. I'm sure all these transformations ravaged his body.

Wow, that red Demon Dog is really striking! I might take a look at getting one on a hunter of my own.

One of my guildies gave most of his pets the same name, but I don't think that was due to any rp/characteristic reason... he was just.. lazy XD

I've done it before as well, though I can't explain why I get attached to one name and not another. Sometimes even a minor change triggers a new name, other times I'll end up using a name over and over, even with different types of pets.

I have three hunters with filled stable slots and even more baby alts and I try giving each pet an other name. The only name I've double is "Nala"- In RL I've got a black cat with light brown, dark brown and white spots - Nala. The first Nala I tamed was the grey hyena, she matches my RL-cat best (my dad keeps saying she looks like a hyena with her fur), the second Nala is Loque (it was becaues of the spots again, and because of the long tail she has). I've got my Nalas on different toons - don't want to have a hunter who's different pets have the same names.

But like most other hunters I had some Pet changes who transformed into some other body and took their names with them. My grey worg became Old Cliff Jumper but her name Miruna stayed. Aotona was named Mapiya but I wouldn't click with her on my Tauren so she became Ban'thalos, who's now Mapiya. I can't think of other changes now, but there were some earlier in my Orc's life when you could only have 5 pets.

All my crabs have been named Maurice. I currently have two Maurices in my stables - Karkin and Ghostcrawler. The latter needs a name change, as I feel there can really only be ONE Maurice, and Karkin is much closer to the original Maurice.

I have also reused the name Gennaro for my devilsaurs, as I feel Gennaro is the only truly awesome name for any devilsaur I could own :)

I currently have two 'Embers' across two toons - Terrorpene on my Troll, and my red wolf (Barnabus) on my baby Dwarf Hunts. The name just seems to suit both of 'em. I don't normally have two of the same name on a single Hunter, though - that would get confusing.

In my mind, my Skarr "Onyx" is actually the re-created form of my wolf from BC, who was also all black, also named Onyx. lol.

"We can rebuild him...we have the technology." - "Yeah but he was actually a wolf..." - "...Oops."

My Nelf has 2 cats named Tuah, one a moonstalker and one an Uldum tiger. My reasoning is that RP-wise moonstalker-Tuah was killed in the Cataclysm (but I couldn't bear to abandon him, so he's now an OOC pet), and later Lark found the tiger, who "inherited" the name.

If I haven't found a name for Skarr by the time she tames him, he might wind up being Tuah #3. >.>

There are some skins I tame and have the same name on my hunters. Its just that the name seems to fit the skin and the pet so well. There are a few of my hunters that are exceptions due to name themes but for the most part there is a handful of special pets I tame and name the same on my hunters.
