A Noble Worg Passes, Two Hunters are Reborn

Unread post by Rhyela »

Kind of a long title, I know. Hope you enjoy and please feel free to comment, though try to keep the unnecessary snide comments to a minimum. Critiquing is welcome but bashing is not appreciated.

This is a tale of my first notable adventure in Mulgore with my brother Volzinja. A great worg is known to stalk these lands.....

Jinvaya’s raven-black braids flapped gently against her chest as the goblin-crafted zeppelin hummed softly through the skies over Mulgore. It was a rather serene flight, for the fields of Mulgore stretched as far as her eyes could see. Volzinja’s wind serpent Jiraji squinted his eyes and hissed contently. The breeze was warm and pleasant, as were most of the days in Mulgore.

Jinvaya was the first to break the silence. “Brotha,” she said without looking Volzinja’s direction, “do ya see anything?”

“Dere be some lions, some wolves, but nothin’ outta da ordinary, ‘mon.”

Suddenly something caught Jinvaya’s eye. “Look, Volzinja!” she shouted, “it’s Ghost Howl hisself!” She quickly strung her simple bow and without more than a moment’s pause, leapt from the zeppelin to the hills below.

Volzinja cringed as he watched his sister’s form disappear from sight. “Looks like we be makin’ our stop here, ‘mon,” he sighed to Jiraji, as he too, leapt from the still-floating zeppelin.

Jiraji flicked his tongue in amusement. I’m going to die young, travelling with these two, the young wind serpent chuckled to himself, as he descended gracefully on the warm currents, down to where his master had jumped.

Jinvaya had miscalculated her leap, and landed harshly on the side of a hill. She rolled in an attempt to absorb some of the shock of the fall, but it was of little use. Pain wracked through her legs and for a moment rendered her unable to breathe. Finally, the advanced regeneration abilities her troll race was so well-known for began to take effect, and the pain began to subside. She slowly made her way to her feet and brushed the grass from her leather pants. “By da Loa!” she cursed as she searched the land surrounding her. Ghost Howl was nowhere in sight. Volzinja had landed some distance away and had just reached Jinvaya’s location.

“Ya lost him, ‘mon?” Volzinja sighed as he glanced towards Jiraji, who had coiled himself upon a sun-bathed rock. Sometimes it seemed as if Jiraji was the only one with any sense. The wind serpent simply looked up at him and quickly flitted his tongue once before turning his gaze toward Jinvaya.

Don’t look at me, you two are the trackers. I’m just here for the fun. The semblance of a smile crept upon Jiraji’s face.

“Don’t gimme dat, Volzinja!” Jinvaya folded her arms across her chest defensively. “He’s a legend for a reason, dey say he moves like a ghost – ya see him one moment and den da next, he’s gone”. But in reality, Jinvaya knew that her tracking skills were somewhat lacking.

Volzinja knew better than to provoke his sister further, so he shrugged and pointed westward. “I’ll search to da west, you search to da east. I figure he stays near da other wolves, so we can circle back and meet here at dis hill if neither of us see him.”

Jinvaya grumbled some trollish expletives, then nodded and began down the hill. The sun over Mulgore was slowly retiring itself over the hills, and an orange light began to filter over the valley. Wolves stalked about in search of game, and Jinvaya made sure to keep her distance. She was a vicious fighter, but did not believe in killing if it could be avoided. Lone lionesses prowled around the few trees that dotted the landscape. While it seemed they were alone, her hunter instincts told her that other members of the pride would be waiting nearby in case of meal or foe. These, too, she avoided. As previously agreed, she travelled to the edge of the hills before turning westward to circle back. Suddenly, a low hum emanated from the blood-filled vial that she carried around her neck.

Jinvaya! I found da worg! Ghost Howl be out to da west! Come, quickly!

Her pendant was one of two voodoo charms crafted by a witch doctor when the siblings were but toddlers. They were simple vials, filled with blood taken from each sibling that was mixed before a voodoo hex placed upon them. While it seemed barbaric to other races, these vials were a way for them to always remain in contact. They had proved invaluable throughout their lives. And now, it had proved to be a great help in locating the elusive worg.

Jinvaya strapped her bow to her back and began a full-speed run westward. It wasn’t long before she located Volzinja crouched upon a low hill, bow in hand, staring intently at the silvery-white worg that paced some hundred yards to the north. Jinvaya’s breath caught in her throat upon seeing the great beast up close for the first time. He was a truly remarkable creature, of a respectable size to say the least. He seemed, for lack of a better description, ancient. Jinvaya turned to Volzinja, who simultaneously glanced her way. His face seemed to reflect her sentiment at that moment. They felt it was wrong to fell such a beast, but legend said that whoever could slay this worg would take on his strength. Ghost Howl was renowned for his superior hunting skills, and for his unnatural ability to remain unseen and silent. But more importantly, the elusive worg was powerful – very powerful. These were traits necessary for an ambitious young hunter…or pair of hunters, in this case.

The two hunters prepared themselves, nodded to each other, and with arrows aimed, charged in unison. I shall show you the meaning of POWER, beast! Jiraji hissed. His orange scales flashed under the light of the setting sun, and he was but a blur as he dashed forth to put himself between the two hunters and Ghost Howl’s fury. The massive worg reared up on his hind paws and was coming down on Jiraji, fangs beared. The cunning wind serpent hissed furiously and unleashed a powerful bolt of pure lightning as he dodged sideways. The lightning danced across the worg’s body, stunning him for a moment.

With brutal accuracy, the hunters’ arrows found their mark, deep within the breast of the great beast. They pierced the old worg’s heart, and with a soft thud unexpected of his size, his body found the earth. Jinvaya, now crying, turned to her brother and buried her face in his chest as he embraced her. Volzinja tried his best to bury the lump that had formed within his throat. It was never a happy moment for any respectable hunter to slay such a creature. The winds moaned softly and the trees’ branches drooped; it seemed as if the very land itself mourned the worg’s passing.

Jiraji simply flicked his tongue at the worg’s corpse. Never underestimate a child of Quetz’lun, beast. The wind serpent was well-aware of his lineage, and made sure everyone else knew it as well.

Suddenly, the winds died and the usual sounds of Mulgore stopped. Jinvaya at once ceased her crying and looked curiously at the now-deceased worg’s body. An eerie, otherworldly crimson glow began to gather itself in the air above. Finally, it manifested roughly into the shape of Ghost Howl. The figure shifted as the substance struggled to hold itself together, and turned its “head” towards them. With what would have been a powerful howl, but was instead an enormous gust of blistering wind, the worg figure lurched forward and began to charge through the air at the two troll siblings.

Stunned, all they could do was watch in amazement and horror, holding each other, as the form collided with them. They stumbled back a bit before falling to their knees as an exhilarating wave of raw energy washed over them. They could feel the worg’s ancient, powerful rage coursing through their veins; until finally, once it had imbued itself wholly upon every fiber of their beings, rushed out of their bodies and galloped off behind them. The troll siblings gathered their composure and reached their feet, and watched as Ghost Howl finally dispersed into the Mulgore breeze, disappearing forever.

Then, the world around them began to sway and turn black. Volzinja collapsed first, followed a moment later by Jinvaya. As their consciousness left them, Jiraji flapped over to them and coiled his scaled body in the grass before them.

Rest now, he whispered, and may the Loa protect you.

Adored it! What an engaging and wonderful story, I can't wait to read more about these siblings. ^^ I just love the characterization of the Trolls, and especially Jiraji. :D The smug but patient mentor...makes me want to give wind serpents another try. ^^ The blood vials were also a great idea, both believable and convenient. :) I really like how you depicted the hunt, and especially the spiritual event afterwards.

This gains a Saturo 8 Tauren out of 11 possible. Loved it. Trolls are tough to survive a Zeppelin jump like that. A bit sad that Ghost Howl passed away tough. Yup.

Yaaay! That means so much coming from you Veph, considering your writing prowess. I'm thinking of the next bit in my head but it usually takes a couple days to get it down on paper how I like it. :D

Those 8 tauren are bigger than your average tauren, right? :P Yeah, the whole jumping-from-zeppelin thing actually happened, too. In a moment of sheer absent-mindedness, we both just jumped right off the side, except in reality we died and had to recover our corpses..... I thought it'd be more exciting to you know...not die in the story.

Aw, you're very welcome! Hee, yeah, it takes me forever to get something written and polished to where I like it. I get writer's block so easily, especially considering how rusty I am with writing in general. ^^;

Are you calling Veph a better writer than me!? I can certainly see why. I write most of my stuff on the iPhone during boring classes. Besides, I don't spend any time at all writing them. And I don't take awesome screenies like Veph does. And I don't use full sentences like Veph does. And veph doesn't have an iPhone that wants to change Veoh into Beph and so forth. And I'll just stop now, seeing as I'm just bashing myself in someone elses thread.

And they're actually smaller than average Tauren.
But some are Druids, so there's a laserchicken and a bear added to the calculation.
(Think of the Ironwrought dam part of the prequel to Illegal Danish. Where he yells ILLEGAL DANISH and then jumps, followed by scoreboards.)

Honestly, it's only because I started to reply to Veph's comment and submitted, but then saw that you said something too, and I was too lazy to change it.

But that story of Gondria that you wrote, I really liked!!! I thought I commented on it...maybe I didn't. I'm getting forgetful at the ripe old age of 26. :D

Ghost of the Past, An Unusual Quarry

Unread post by Rhyela »

Consciousness returned slowly to the two hunters. The world seemed to spin for several minutes before finally coming to a stop. Volzinja sat up, leaning on one hand, and rubbed his head with his other. Jiraji was still laying before them, and Volzinja wondered if he had kept watch the entire time they lay asleep.

“How long were we out, ‘mon?” he asked groggily.

The sun set, and is rising again. It is curious that no wild beasts approached as you slept. Jiraji then seemed lost in thought as he looked over the still-sleeping Jinvaya.

Volzinja remained silent for a few moments, then, suddenly, his eyes widened. “Da smells be…amazin’!” He turned his head left and right, sniffing, then shook Jinvaya awake.

“By Sen’jin’s withered heart, what’s da matter with ya?” she shouted crankily, half-asleep. Sleep was not something Jinvaya surrendered without a fight.

“Jinvaya 'mon, somethin's different! Look around!" Volzinja was on his feet now, sniffing excitedly as he spun every which way. Jiraji was now watching and hissing in a way that appeared to be laughter.

Ghost Howl's...strength...as it were, appears to have taken effect. So the dumb beast had some power in him after all. Jiraji seemed amused at this revelation.

Jinvaya shot an annoyed glance at Jiraji, and rose to her feet. Volzinja, crazy as he appeared at the moment, was right. Something was different. She could smell the euphoric peacebloom nearby, laden with morning's dew; and the stench of some poor beast's corpse as it was picked apart by a swoop. She could hear the songs of birds far overhead, and from at least a mile away in the hills. Mulgore's carpet of grass felt soft and cool under her feet, and she could detect the forms of trees and animals on the horizon. Every sense seemed infinitely keener than it had the day before.

Then, she remembered back to the previous day's kill. "Volzinja," she grabbed his arm, causing him to stop spinning for a moment, "we need ta pay respect to da worg's body. He gave us a great power, an' we ought ta thank him."

Volzinja nodded, then offered an arm to Jiraji, who coiled loosely around it. The poor wind serpent looked tired, and Volzinja surmised he had stayed awake all night to guard his hunter.

I thank you, troll. Even a Loa child gets tired after watching you two fools sleep like a rock. He rested his head on Volzinja's shoulder and playfully flicked his tongue against his ear. Volzinja smiled and followed Jinvaya, who was already headed for the location of the worg's corpse.

Jinvaya was the first to reach the spot where the old worg fell, and was startled to find his body missing. She was sure this was the place, his smell still lingered on every inch of the ground and clung to the moist air. She knelt down and ran her fingers over the grass. The grass was...warm? Volzinja knelt beside her, Jiraji still clinging to his arm. The two hunters looked at each other, speechless. There was no obvious explanation for the body's disappearance. Had a tauren come to claim the corpse while they slept? That didn't seem likely. Jinvaya's eyes soon fell to the paw prints leading away from the flattened grass, towards the hills. The paws that left those marks were very large indeed.

"Volzinja," Jinvaya said softly, "I think I know why dey call him Ghost Howl....." She was cut off by a very long, triumphant howl, originating in the mountains far to the north. And at that moment, a warm wind rushed down from the hills, embracing them for a few brief but joyous seconds, then disappeared as suddenly as it came. The hunter siblings stood and smiled, then hugged one another. Ghost Howl didn't just pass on his strength, he gave them a gift. It was a gift available to any other hunter he deemed worthy. "We thank ya, bruddah," Jinvaya whispered.

Loa spirits take many forms. I wonder..... but Jiraji did not finish the sentence. What was done was done, and the three knew that it was time to move on.

******************************************************

Jinvaya and Volzinja decided, in no small part due to Jiraji's nagging, to head to Thunder Bluff to restock on supplies. It had been a while since their last meal, and their appetites were ravenous after all that had recently transpired. Plus, the tauren were known for their gracious hospitality, so food and lodging would not be in short supply. And, with the sheer height of the city, the two hunters were eager to see just how sharp their newfound senses really were.

They began the trek up to the great mesa in relative silence, apart from their grumbling stomachs. But Jinvaya stopped suddenly, head cocked slightly. An odd sound pierced her ears, and it was coming from south of Thunder Bluff. Volzinja heard it, too, and glanced at Jinvaya.

"Ya hear dat?" Jinvaya questioned. "Dat doesn't sound good at all, 'mon".

Volzinja nodded in agreement, and both trolls looked southward.

Blasted trolls! Jiraji tightened his coils around Volzinja's arm threateningly, but to no effect.

"Oh, stop ya whinin', will ya?" Volzinja scolded before retrieving a hunk of bread from his pack.

You expect me to eat that? Jiraji turned his head away in a very obvious pout and refused the morsel.

"We be just a minute, 'mon, den we go to Thunder Bluff."

Jiraji exhaled, hissed unpleasantly, and loosened his grip on Volzinja's arm.

Jinvaya was already jogging to the source of the odd sound. It was much further away than she had previously thought, but the morning air felt refreshing as it filled her lungs so she didn't mind the distance. She finally reached the western edge of Mulgore, at the base of the mountains. The sound had definitely come from this area, but what was it? She retrieved her bow from her back, just in case, and squatted upon the dirt. She squinted and let the air fill her nostrils in an attempt to detect the source of the sound. "What was dat?" she muttered to herself.

Volzinja reached her a moment later with a very grumpy Jiraji flapping behind. Jinvaya couldn't help but smile at their little quarrels. Jiraji liked to think himself a wind serpent born from Quetz'lun himself, but most of the time he was nothing more than a spoiled brat. But, Volzinja loved him, and Jiraji returned the sentiment, though he would not openly admit it.

Jinvaya's musings were interrupted by a loud, obnoxious screech coming from a cluster of trees to her right. She stood abruptly, bow in hand, ready to fire at the slightest hint of danger. The brush surrounding the trees shook, and suddenly, a tall gray bird burst out in a flash of feathers and leaves. The creature darted madly left and right, squawking as it went. Jinvaya blinked in surprise, then her attention was drawn again to her right when she heard the roar of two young lions in pursuit.

Jinvaya's heart clenched in her chest as she watched the gray bird running for its life. She was a hunter, and knew better than to interfere with another hunter's game, be it hominid or beast. But the poor bird was sorely outmatched and outnumbered, and would be easy prey for the two powerful lions. She frowned as her mind raced, trying to decide at that moment what to do. Seconds ticked by like an eternity, and finally she raised her bow, drew back an arrow, and aimed it at the first lion. I can't watch dis slaughter, she thought to herself.

She drew a deep breath and was about to release the arrow, but something about this whole scene was out of the ordinary. Her hunter's instincts told her that the bird was in no danger, though every other indication suggested otherwise. She at last loosened her grip of the arrow and watched as the two lion cubs pounced on the bird. Squawking, the bird rolled onto its back and kicked its legs wildly in the air, but was otherwise unharmed. The cubs pawed at the bird's flailing legs, then hopped backwards and excitedly ran in circles before pouncing again. Were they...playing? A small smile crept upon Jinvaya's lips as she observed the odd trio.

But before Jinvaya had a chance to really conclude what was happening, a deep and menacing growl issued from behind her.

So, you mean my pride harm, Two-Legs?

Jinvaya quickly spun on her heels, finding herself face-to-face with the biggest male lion she had ever seen. His enormous head was crowned in long, golden fur, and his eyes burned with bestial intensity. "Da...da...Rake?" she stuttered nervously.

Hi guys,
I know I haven't followed up on this story in a while, a lot of crap's been going on - especially with work. Tons of mandatory OT makes this hunter very tired, indeed. That's finally passed by but we're still faced with tons of this spill-over work, so I'm typically not in the mood to write. But don't worry, I've been brainstorming things and I'm sure Jinvaya will have another adventure soon enough! :)
