Ravager Question:

Unread post by Melentari »

Okay, I'm still working on my little themed hunters - it's just that recently, I've only had the energy to do my dailies and poke around a little at helping people tame their wanted pets. But something occurred to me that I really don't have a good answer for.

One of my themed hunters is doing bugs. The other is doing reptiles. Do ravagers count as either one? I know that some of them drop a carapace, and both reptiles and bugs have carapaces: turtles, for reptiles, and some forms of arachnids for bugs. And they're such alien creatures that it's hard for me to know one way or the other.

So, Ravagers: bug or reptile or neither?

Hmm, I don't see them as reptilian at all. Purely insectoid in my mind.

They seem like reptilian aliens to me. They remind of Venom from Spiderman.

Yeah, this is all why I asked the question. The legs say insect to me, but the mouth seems more reptilian than insect.

They're probably a mix of both.

Actually, I had my ravager out while running AQ 40 and they definitely seem insectoid to me. Actually, I think they remind me a lot of silithids in some ways >_>

Honestly, I don't think they can be classified as either insectoid or reptilian. Much like sporebats and nether rays, they're alien and that's kind of what I think of when I see them: an alien. Shoot, even the standard (old) silithid model is based off the aliens from Super Troopers.

There like Xenomorpths they look like something we know but are not.

I seem to recall there being an extensive discussion on the origins and biology of the ravagers on the board quite some time ago. *goes searching* Ah yes, here it is!

Definitely some sort of insect like creature. They drop carapaces and the only other animal group would be the turtle's...don't see any turtle resemblance in there. I also see segments of their bodies when they move. Screams insect to me. I think ravagers are stunning. My favorite is the blue and green one from Azuremyst Isle. But I think they are all beautiful.

Thank you very much for the link!

I just finished reading through it and while there's a lot of discussion, there's not really much agreement except that it looks like a bug, but that it has characteristics from other types of creatures. Frustrating critters, these ravagers. It's hard for me to make a decision either way, really, because they're so alien and ambiguous. I want to try one, but I just don't know if there's one that fits either of my possible candidates. But then, the point was raised about us not knowing what Sporebats or Nether Rays are, either.

The more I look at what they drop in-game (carapace, leather, scales), the more they look like some variety of reptile, so who knows. Emilliy might end up taming one, even though it's hard to rationalise. Maybe I'll come face to face with one that I just click with. That's the real test.

But I will say that I'll forever think of them as Jellybeans after having seen them with the Orcs up in Hellfire Peninsula. They looked so tiny next to their hunters that they just looked like tiny, curly Jellybeans.

I vote they are mammal,
They care for their young, a feature insects and repitiles usually don't have, they are highly intellegent and work seperately from each othe unlike an insect, and they have only two eyes on the front of their heads, something both reptiles and insects lack.

Insectoidal alien creature, IMO - from a type of creatures not dissimilar to insects, but alien nevertheless (during one Bloodmyst quest they're called "alien predators").

By definition, their chitinous* body and segmented legs make them insectoid:
Wikipedia wrote:Insectoid denotes any creature or object that shares a similar body or traits with common earth insects and arachnids.
*Chitin by itself wouldn't be a lock, but the segmented legs are about as distinctive as you can get

I've always seen them as insectoid, given the segmented bodies.

Ravager=mammal,
I'm sorry, but no. They don't fit the definition of a mammal at all.
Any of various warm-blooded vertebrate animals of the class Mammalia, including humans, characterized by a covering of hair on the skin and, in the female, milk-producing mammary glands for nourishing the young.
They are definitely more insectoid than they are mammalian.
