Madexx didn't like me as much. I really wanted black or red, but would be happy to tame whatever color showed first. Upon hitting level 84, I sat myself above the sands of Uldum and waited a straight twelve hours before a guildmate suggested I go level. " You can always camp after you hit 85! " So, thinking I'd not see Madexx anytime soon, I flew off to quest. I came back an hour later to find Madexx. Red. Also, dead. I was pretty sad, but staring at red Madexx's body, I decided I didn't really like that color of him... so it was black I wanted most. I took the rest of the night to level, hit 85, and came back to camp the next day.
After spending a whole 14 hours there, and being very, very tired, I was about to call it quits when I looked straight down... and there Madexx was! Alive, well, and... brown. Definitely not the color I wanted. But it was Madexx, so I tamed him anyway, named him Salim, and did a whole lot of PvP with him. I really liked having a scorpid, but wasn't overly fond of his color, so I kept flying around Uldum on occasion, not in much of a mood to camp. A few nights later, I ran across a blue Madexx, and tamed it just to have it, replacing my brown.
Then they put up the PTR in which there was a common, color changing brown and blue scorpid. I was a bit mad. I had put a lot of effort into looking for a scorpid that I never got, and the colors I -did- get were being made into a common mob that I could have just grabbed without spending all that time camping. Eventually they turned the common into brown only, and I felt a little better about it, but I still didn't have the Madexx I wanted.
Eventually I started camping, this time with a group of other hunters who all wanted different colors. Day after day, we camped Madexx, catching nearly every spawn, and most of them got the colors they wanted, but black never spawned. Eventually I just gave up. Of course I flew over every now and then, and a few times I saw Madexx, though still never black.
When 4.2 came out, they introduced a common mob that looked like black Madexx, and I was very happy! Finally, I could have the skin I wanted, and not have to spend hours camping for it! As soon as I could get into firelands, I went straight to the nearest scropid and tame him. Finally, Salim was the color he should be! But it wasn't right. I didn't grow attached at all to the firelands scorpion. I never really used him. I kept thinking back to Madexx. I knew I wouldn't really be happy until I could tame him.
Back to camping! Of course, I never really camped for long... a few hours now and then, and amazingly I caught Madexx a lot... not black, but plenty of red. After seeing the third red in a row, I broke down and tamed it.... and really thought I liked it after all! It matched the outfit I had created for transmog, and its purple eyes really stood out. Salim changed colors yet again, and I happily ran around with my new red buddy. I still found myself flying around Uldum on occasion, though, but not nearly as often. I saw red another two times, finding him homes with other hunters.
Today, I went to Uldum, out of habit. As I ran out of the temple building, I spotted a Tauren standing there with a scorpion by her side. The black Madexx model. I was worried then... was that Madexx, or not? Had she just tamed it? Had I missed my chance at actually getting black by mere minutes? I quickly hopped on my mount and flew north, hitting all of Madexx's points. Nothing, nothing, nothing.... oh, there he is! I didn't even see him, just his dot on the minimap. Well, at least the Tauren hadn't just tamed it, as it was right there! I looked down at my scorpid friend, and... wait a moment. No, no it couldn't possibly be...
