Question on pet taming etiquette
So I;m flying across Hyjal and I see Anka, the last spirit beast I need to complete my collection but then there's another hunter following him around.
So I ask him isn;t he going to tame it?
And he says that he;s following it for a friend, been doing it for an hour.
So what should I do in this situation?
I;m in a bg right now as I write this, if the friend hasn;t tamed it by the time I;m out I;m thinking about taming it anyways.

Re: Question on pet taming etiquette
If the friend hasn't shown up in an hour, and they weren't even camping, I don't see why you shouldn't tame her. The friend might get mad at you, but I mean..the person who wants to tame is probably in a raid or something. It's kind of ridiculous to be waiting for an hour for your friend to show up and tame.

Well I tamed it.
The guy who was following it for his friend wasn;t too pleased though.

Not very happy with how it turned out but I did give him almost 2 hours to get this friend but /sigh.

Yes, very pissed off hunter here. I managed to protect her for over two hours,
my friend was just behind the corner to finally arrive ( she definitely was not on a raid,
or anything silly of that sort. ) Then this one idiot sweeps in and tries to tame her.
Well I pretty clearly tried to shoot him off, but he just goes with it anyways.
He didn't even ask for a reason why I was waiting for my friend, and afterwards
cries how I should've explained our day long camping session and my friend's situation
to him the moment she asked if I was going to tame Ankha.
I'll spread your name. Karma will get you.

Understandable that you are angry, however it is Petopia rules that you can not name and shame. Emophia, you probably want to edit that name out, and neosmies, you need to edit out the name as well.

Re: Question on pet taming etiquette
Hmm.
I can understand both sides of this.
First off, if I was keeping it safe for a friend, I'd be pretty ticked. But… Two hours is a LONG time to make other hunters wait. Your friend isn't the only hunter out there and it's a bit unfair to say it's his rare only, because no rare is ever "This hunter's" rare. It's a mob, it doesn't have a tag. After two hours, just give other hunters a chance.
However, I don't agree with how the responding party, well, responded. :-/ " /care" is just flat out rude.

Well two hours....compared to the about twelve+ s/he now makes us wait more,
on top of the full day we waited before that.
And I know.. Didn't make me feel much better in that situation when you can clearly see that s/he does not give a crap :/

Re: Question on pet taming etiquette
I agree with Lupis. Two hours is beyond the time I would wait to tame a mob. And you cannot simply "tag" a rare for someone else. There will always be another one. But I also agree that "/care" is flat out rude. And Neosmies, spreading a name around can hurt both parties. It's happened to me before, in which I did NOT ninja the Huntsman Steed in kara, but simply rolled a 100 on it. I took a screen shot of it (it was need/greed), and the person who wanted it, blamed me for ninja'ing. When it was proven that I did not ninja it, and it turned out he ninja'd Phoenix. (I was not present at that raid, but the guild leader was).
In the end, both parties did something wrong.
Well, there's my 5 minutes of complete nonsense.

Re: Question on pet taming etiquette
Sorry, but 2 hours? You cannot lay claim on ANY MOB in the game, even if it was for 5 minutes. If someone is kind enough to wait an HOUR like this person did, you should consider yourself lucky. First come, first serve, and its even worse that you tried to hold a mob for someone who wasn't even there.
Editing: And I forgot to say that yes, how they responded with /care was very rude, so I do think both parties were in the wrong.

Re: Question on pet taming etiquette
If your friend wasn't there, Ankha was 100% fair game. In fact, I'm impressed by the generosity of OP giving said friend a full hour, or nearly two, or whichever to get there. That's a long, long time to wait for the sake of politeness, especially given that by your own admission you didn't tell them what the situation was. I agree that /care was a very rude remark, and you have the right to be angry about that... however, it was kind of called for, given the language. In short: I agree with the above posters. Neither party handled the situation well.

Btw I;m Prozen from EU Chromaggus not phrozen.
Thank you.
Also yeah /care was pretty rude and moreso annoying as hell to be on the receiving end of as I;m sure everyone knows including me, but I was annoyed after he told 'f you' after I waited 2 hours. But yes I probably shouldn;t have used it.

2 hours...damn....Im surprised you waited that long....hell im surprised it LASTED that long with no other knucklehead killing or taming it. If I see a rare im looking for i /land /tame. I actually dont look to see if anyones arround. If I land and see someone actually trying to tame then yes by all means I relinquish my claim but otherwise its mine.
Re: Question on pet taming etiquette
Thanks, you guys, for sticking with the rules. :3
Also, for the situation, I will agree that it is fair game to any and all who can get it. It's like saving a seat for your friend. Are you really going to tell that person they can't sit down next to you on the bus because your friend is at the last possible stop and you're saving the seat for them?
However, in retaliation, I think the appropriate reaction would've been to calmly explain that it is free for all, and that you are sorry they lost their effort, and that you'll perhaps keep an eye out for her in the future. It's always better to be polite and make a friend then be a jerk and make an enemy.

Re: Question on pet taming etiquette
Man, two hours! When I found a rare in Mount Hyjal or the Molten Front, I'd whisper any other hunters that wanted to tame that were in the same zone. If none were available, I'd whisper those in nearby zones. If no one was around (and this would happen because I play kinda late), then I'd just keep checking while I resumed whatever it was I was doing before. If I whispered someone and they said yes, I'd help them tame. Usually, hunters that wanted to tame came to the spawn spot immediately (unless they disconnect, which has happened). I've never had to wait 2 hours for a hunter that I was helping to tame to come the spawn spot. The most was like half an hour and that was the guy who disconnected (he also came from SW so it took longer too). The part that took a while was helping them tame. I wouldn't like do the taming process for them but instead teach them how to tame. That is unless, I don't have much time left and it seems that they really would want it. Still, most of the hunters that I help tame get it pretty quickly and do it on their own.

I don't care if it's 2 min or 2 hours, if the tamer isn't the one on the pet, it's fair game as far as i'm concerned.

Re: Question on pet taming etiquette
2 Hours? That's a lot of time to wait and Ankha is fair game, even if it was just five minutes. Until she's tagged by your friend, she's fair game to anyone who wants her.
Granted, the /care was very rude.

Re: Question on pet taming etiquette
The person who tamed Ankha after waiting 2 hours said " /care" to the opposing party.
Also, I'd like to add this.
In many conflicts I've seen, these rares (Meaning the Molten Front, and Cata/Wrath rares), have brought out the bitter hatred in everyone. Not only do people ninja tame, but they also kill. But this has no right to tell another hunter that it's a friend's tame. Ankha was 100% fair game. I will tell you what I say to every hunter when I see a rare up. "I will watch him, but if another hunter comes along, it's fair game". Keep in mind, that it was very lucky that he waited an hour or two before taming. That is beyond fair.
There's another 5 minutes of my nonsense >_>

Re: Question on pet taming etiquette
I honestly have no sympathy for the guy who was watching Ankha for two hours. If your friend wanted him so much, then he should get there. Pronto. I don't mean to sound rude, but if you want a pet that badly that you can convince a friend to watch it for two hours, you should be there in ten minutes or less. If you weren't in a raid or bg, there's no reason you shouldn't be able to get there, unless you weren't level 85 or haven't done the Hyjal storyline quests to be phased enough to see Ankha, in which case, you have no right to him. At all.
While I think it was noble to try and help your friend, and extremely selfless to maddenly circle above a mob trying to protect it for two hours, the original poster not only asked you if you wanted it, they then gave you and your friend far more time than was necessary before finally taming it for themselves. I can understand the frustation of losing a tame that you badly wanted, but you set yourself up to fail by expecting everyone else in the game to adhere to your arbitrary declaration of the spawn being "yours" when it wasn't tagged, or even really meant for you.
Lastly, in regards to the original poster's /care response, yes it wasn't nice, but considering the other party's language and him saying that he hopes they get hit by a car, that doesn't even qualify as rude in my book, but rather a remarkable show of restraint. An ugly situation all around, but I think the original poster did nothing wrong here. Just my two cents though, and I don't expect anyone else to necessarily agree with me.
