Aw you're not scary. Boys will be boys. Maybe you should ask them nicely why they seem to avoid that contact with you.

depending how you feel about it, you could always try playing into it... Something like jokingly "don't worry, you're not my type" or.. I don't know. Or even yes, mentioning your preference. I'm sure there's probably more subtle ways to get the point across that that's not what you're even remotely interested in :/ But again, that's TOTALLY a personal preference thing and I know that I could personally never do it.

But yes. People suck. Especially immature little boys. That's why I plan to work with animals.

Meh, silly immature guys.... You'd think they'd enjoy talking to people on long shifts, especially while having hobbies in common! Im not sure what to suggest, I honestly think that the problem is entirely on their side, whatever it is. Maybe you can pick them out one on one and ask them why they don't talk to you? Or why they behave like that. Sometimes for guys, it's easier to be themselves when they're not in groups.

*hugs*

Let's be charitable and assume that, rather than rude, they are simple-minded and don't know how to interact with a female who's not a pin-up or mommy figure. Ignoring them is probably your best bet. Either it will give them a chance to become less skittish, or they just aren't worth your time.

They are quite disrespectful aren't they?

Think this way, with that kind of attitude they can only move up so much in the society, until they stop acting like kids and learn to be decent adults.

Yeah, it can be. I used to have a co-worker that would pick on me constantly because I wasn't as fast as she was or my pants were too long for her tastes or some stupid shit like that. It does make work a lot less fun to the point you dread it.

If you looked like that "bimbo" and played wow, they be all over you..They probably be tripping over themselves to talk to you. I guess you have to look like a barbie doll in order for them to talk to you..

Not entirely sure... but i'm early 20's, and if I worked there i'm sure i'd talk to you. (We're in the same guild, I don't think you'd leave me any other choice.) XD

Well I don't know what those guys are like, but historically... I don't think i've ever really sat down and chatted with a chick who was younger than 40. In the last 4 or so years I befriended a widowed 60-ish year old, and a divorced 43 year old. Girls 22 and younger I don't normally pay attention to, the 23-27 year olds are easiest to get along with.. and here's the part I don't understand. I've felt uncomfortable around every woman i've met aged 30-39. I even had a woman in her mid-30's approach me one time, said that I should hang out with them at lunch. It was a really nice gesture, and from what I could tell she was a perfectly reasonable person, yet for some odd reason I wasn't able to overcome the compulsion I had to stay the hell away. They weren't intimidating people, but their presence felt intimidating, if that makes any sense?

Your appearance seems fine to me, and you wouldn't think that'd be a problem, but then I realized.. I tend to avoid those slutty, socialite-type figures that you mentioned previously working there, and instead, I choose to hang out with the quieter, more tomboyish girls (particularly those partial to wearing baggy guy's clothing.) So I guess in that workplace you either need to be extreeeeeemeely old, or dress like a hooker in order to be worth talking to.. Pretty damn sad...

On a side note... I normally tend to do my own thing, and I inadvertently attract newcomers & outcasts like crazy, as if i'm some sort of misfit magnet. If things don't shape up (and you're there for a while,) you could always get to know that new face who's bound to show up. x3

I think that applies to most people, regardless of gender. It's a good bet, but they might view the question itself as an act of desperation, or something stupid like that.. *shrugs*

MINE EYES.
No wait. You look like a bro-tier.

Men are men. They will act like pricks because they can. Man-Whores as I like to call them will only associate with the opposite gender if it means they can get something out of it. That age range is full of the "Man-Whore". Man-Whoredom tends to die down in later years of age.

Don't let them get to you.

I got a wonderful saying but I wont say it in the open cause it's a bit on the adult side. *chuckles* But I think you and your lover will agree to it.

Teigan wrote:I work in a factory where most of the other employees are male, especially on night shift which I am on. Out of the crew and supervisors there are two women: me and another lady, who we will call "Cathy." Except for the boss, who we will call "Rob" who is probably about 60, the guys are in their 20s. "Cathy" is older, in her 50s.

I have worked there for nearly 5 months. The only people who will talk to me are Cathy and Rob. It makes for VERY long 10 hour shifts. I pull my weight, I do my work. I never once have pulled the "I'm a helpless/flirty lil female...please do my stuff for me" routine. I dress for work, not for show. I should fit in, even with an almost all male crew. Well, Cathy might as well be one of the boys as well ;) .

But, anyway. There was a third woman on the shift until about a month ago. We will call her Dumb Bimbo. She wore skin tight jeans and little tops to work in an industrial environment. You know the type. The boys...they liked her, even though some of them also hated her. At least they talked to her. But, we all can figure why they did..

So, I've been trying to figure out WHY they won't talk to me. I am shy, I grant that. But I try to be friendly and Cathy and Rob seem to like me. But they boys, when I walk by, they avoid eye contact. If I try to join a conversation, they basically ignore me. For example, when I first started I noticed they all talked about WoW alot and all played. So, I thought "Great, neutral hobby-type topic I can at least make conversation about" I tried. They basically shut up, muttered something about not really playing that much and changed the subject.
I have observed things. Its not sexism as they are best buds with Cathy and liked Dumb Bimbo (for obvious reasons). They aren't intimidated by women doing men's work, since as I said they love Cathy. It's not that I'm new, since the two new guys are already in with them. So what is it?

The best theory I can come up with is this: they are afraid the ugly fat chick will hit on them if they show any friendliness. I know, its harsh. But boys that age ain't too well developed mentally more often than not. I think they see me as this overweight, unattractive, apparently single and therefore desperate and lonely woman who will pounce on them if they so much as say hi. Sometimes I really want to yell "I'm a huge dyke and I have a girlfriend!! You are safe, little boy!! Scary fat chick won't hit on you!!" OMFG!

Oh, and this is what I typically wear to work. Scary fat chick OMG!

Image

You're not scary, you're not ugly and no way in hell fat. Don't say such horrible things.

If people don't want to get to know you, that's their loss. You've tried, and I'm afraid to say it but in all walks of life you meet people like this. It's just a shame it has to be in work where you're around these people for a lot of time.

If I was going to take a guess, it's most likely they're intimidated by a strong looking woman. You know how men are, and especially at that age.

No matter what age I was, I never bothered with anyone's age, or looks. If you where a nice person, then you and I would get along great. You sound like you I and would get along just great if we worked together etc.

Teig don't be mean to yourself, you don't deserve to be treated that way.

Jade wouldn't be with just anybody, after all. :)

EDIT: As far as the guys. You're intelligent and (gasp) have your own opinions about things - and not just about "safe" things as chauvinists tend to think of them e.g. flowers, shoes, cooking, etc. This imo is probably at the root of it. Some may work through it though, given time.
