Posable new monkey skin
Re: Posable new monkey skin
Editing because I missread .-. anyways.
Makrura are definitely pretty smart creatures. They live in cities and have their own language.

Re: Posable new monkey skin
A shame, really. If they were just beasts they'd make such great additions to the crustacean family
Then again there's now a bunch of crawfish and lobsters in the game that use the exact same model, so theoretically if one of those was big enough...
I doubt they'd do that though as it'd only become confusing.

Yes. If you want an exception, Chromaggus was a bad example. Why?Zuilu wrote:So back onto the original topic, Chromaggus is different, imo. Chromaggus looks like a corehound to me, and at the time Blizz wouldn't have had a family to put that kind of creature into, being Vanilla. These however are an entire race of humanoids, such as murlocs or rockflayers- They appear kind of beastly, but no way we can tame one. Chances of taming the monkies are slim to none, though getting a new primate skin isn't completely out of the question given the theme for this x-pac.
Because Blizzard places underlying model > skin. Yeah he has scales and draconic snout - but overall silhouette is still very much corehound.
Now look at the actual WoW monkey; like the gorilla it runs primarily on all 4's (or 3's if it just filched something):

Now look at the new NPC race from MoP; designed to stand upright, body is straight and slender not hunched and compact like a monkey's, e.g. silhouette is quite different:
If anything, the new NPCs are closer to trolls. You may well see a minipet version of these guys (which you could then use in pet battles!), but anything else would be a rather sharp break from tradition.

Re: Posable new monkey skin
I hadn't actually seen the model before, but now that i have, I'll say I definitely don't think so. The silhouette explanation makes sense. My bigger counter point are the pants/loincloths <.< It's hard to see in such a small model, but it definitely looks like they're wearing clothes. Beasts don't wear clothes. Correct me if I'm wrong.. but didn't they even make it so that the monkey's don't keep their pick axe when tamed anymore either (unless it's still possible to trick tame, but then that still isn't INTENDED so doesn't count as an argument point). And I would say that anything with any kind of humanoid gear (clothes, weapons) would be tameable.
I know that there's a few points that could be somewhat controversial in this... But clothes intended to provide "decency" is generally a humanoid trait, as is the tendency to carry a weapon.

Yes, some raptors wear feathers and jewelry*, so the "civilized accoutrements" argument isn't 100% airtight but it's pretty nearly, and taken in conjunction with the silhouette mismatch and NPC identity crisis, it's collectively more than enough.
*And even regarding decorated raptors, it's still the same base model, so just like with blighthounds, core hounds et al it's silhouette over skin.

Re: Posable new monkey skin
Yeah, I sort of acknowledged the self decorated raptors. Which is why I mentioned:
The sense of decency and desire to hide our gender specific organs is a trait that I believe is almost exclusively limited to sentient "civilized" beings (at least, in our current mind view). So I can't see a wow model which expresses that value to be something tameable, as it's a pretty clear and easy definition for Blizzard to follow consistently.I know that there's a few points that could be somewhat controversial in this... But clothes intended to provide "decency" is generally a humanoid trait, as is the tendency to carry a weapon.
Re: Posable new monkey skin
And even this is a pretty big exception, I can't really think of any other WoW-beasts that do this. Raptors do so because of how incredibly intelligent they are, I'd say they're nearly on the level of dragon intelligence, just less humanoid and more beast.Worba wrote: And top knots as well...

While monkies are very intelligent, I don't think a tameable monkey is smart enough to wear pony tails and fashion loincloth.
With raptors its just kind of a..ehm..advanced practice, like raccoons washing their hands in puddles before they eat, gatherer crabs wearing things on their shells, dolphins blowing bubble-rings, etc.
The pictures -really- put into perspective with how different they are, though, I never realized they were so lanky and troll-y like you said.
Re: Posable new monkey skin
Damnit Worba, dont you know the hunter community has for years wanted Monkey-Trolls to be tameable?

Re: Posable new monkey skin
I respectfully disagree. Whether a beast walks on two legs or not is mostly irrelevant. It is not necessarily going to become advanced or sapient (I think that's what you meant to say, sentience is the ability to feel, perceive or be conscious - all living animals have some degree of sentience).i would still like to express that these stand and walk on two legs and not on all 4's (or on legs because their arms are actually wings, thus making walking on all 4's impossible) is a very strong reason and guideline blizz follows in deeming what is viable for beast and viable for humanoid. I dont know much about the science's view on creatures that walk on 4's and ones that walk on 2's but i myself believe that if they walk on 2's, they are on some track in evolution to becoming a sentient humanoid race and are more advanced as a result then a 4 legged creature.
A duck for example, walks on two legs, but I don't think anyone really believes that ducks have the possibility to become intelligent humanoid beings? Same goes for dinosaurs that walk on two legs - some even had arms that potentially could have grasped and held objects, but that does not mean that they were on their way to becoming humanoid.
Dolphins and whales do not have legs at all and yet they are the next most intelligent animal on our planet after humans, if any other animal will become sapient in future, it will be them (perhaps they already are?).
Centaurs are humanoid, but they walk on 4 legs. Raptors and Hydras are beasts yet they walk on two legs.
I mean no disrespect and I'm not trying to get at anyone with this comment (this thread is attracting a lot of negativity

If a cool, shiny new creature appears in WoW at some point in the future - something that is clearly a beast and yet walks on 2 legs - I would want to be able to tame it and not have it tagged as humanoid simply because it refuses to put it's front legs on the ground

Re: Posable new monkey skin
Hmm well lets see monkey skill..
Bad Manner [Special Ability]
20 yd range
0.5 sec cast
1 min cooldown
Hurls a handful of something special at the target, blinding them for 4 sec. Rude.
The current monkies are still rude but those monkies would stick their hands down there uh loin cloth and fling. Thats ruder. RUDER. I think Plus they really would give me nightmares in PVP.. humanoid monkey go? They do crouch but still..freaky..

Not all time but sometimes monkey's are surf with a group and occurs monkey facts. Its are so cute in their home i mean in forest. But when they comes in locality then it seems very very annoying.

Re: Posable new monkey skin
A new tameable asian-style monkey beast? Sure! That would be lovely!
Would said monkey be the one debated in this thread? Probably not.
My incredibly dull two cents.
Forever wishing for a tameable lemur.
