I was assigned the old world blue crab model. Since I've been in Northrend a lot lately, working on the Argent tournament dailies, I decided to tame Kili'ua.

Upon meeting Kili'ua, my future pet's personality came through right away. This mob is gigantic, but after taking a few swipes at me, he bugged and completely stopped attacking. He just stood there, staring at me.

Image

These crabs have such a worried expression. That coupled with him freezing up while attacking me gave me the idea to name my new crab Wimpy.

Image

I swear at one point the crab mouths actually had the individual "teeth" properly cut out. It was back in Vanilla. Sadly I don't have a screenshot of a crab from back then, as I've gone through several computers since. Shame the shapes are not cut out anymore.

ANYWAYS. I'm a fan of the blue crab models. I love the markings on their backs. And they're SHINY.

Image

Crabs are quiet pets, in both sounds and animations, and I like quiet. They just look from side to side while idle. They alternate attacking with each pincher when fighting, and they have a paddling swim animation. Pin has that typical purple aura effect that most movement impairing spells have.

I spec'ed Wimpy for DPS, despite being Tenacity, and took him to Heroic UP for a try at the blue proto drake. I noticed he picked up a pretty pink color in there. Maybe he's flushed with excitement.

Image

He did a pretty good Ghost Crawler imitation while in camo.

Image

While trying to sneak past a group of Vrykul, we accidentally aggro'ed them. I blame Wimpy, since that never happens with my Spiritbeast. WAY TO GO, WIMPY. ;) While trying to kill these guys, I noticed aggro problems, and I can only assume it was from the crab ability Pin. Turning it off solved the problem.

Image

Wimpy seemed nervous to take on Skadi. Oh Wimpy, don't be nervous.

Image

See? You did just fine.

Image

No protodrake. Wimpy did just fine with all of the adds, but I still much prefer doing that run with my spirit beast - it goes much faster. Such is the dps of a Tenacity pet.

I really like the old school crab models, but my dislike of their Pin ability always keeps me from having one for very long. My dog has a similar ability, but as a Ferocity pet his dps at least makes up for it - I turn his ability off and still burn mobs down well enough. I really hope at some point in the future Pin is either fixed to not be channeled or replaced with something better (making it like the croc's Ankle Crack ability would be nice). I PVP often, but I had no desire to take Wimpy into any BGs because of how poopie Pin is. The fact that Kill Command breaks it makes me a sad Beast Master. But then again I think my croc has thoroughly spoiled me. You could turn Pin off and spec a crab into all of the straight tanking talents and it would probably do just fine, but I have more than enough tanky pets that I'm attached to right now. I would rather use my turtles or my beetle for heavy duty tanking, like soloing Stonecore.

So I released Wimpy. He was cute, but just not cute enough. Maybe some day we will be reunited, but I don't see that happening while Pin stays the same.

The kind of ironic thing though is that I listed the pet as Magria in the rolls because it was one she said she had. XD I usually hand out the spirit beasts/special rares by name.

Also, I was going to point out that the name of the pet was mistaken as well so there's nothing wrong with gently reminding her. The only reason I would correct it is because I don't want any person reading this and not familiar with the pets to confuse the two. :)
Oops! Idk how I got that wrong. I knew I was doing a report on Magria lol! Just one of those brain fart moments lol. I'll edit my post! That's what I get for multitasking while at work ! :D

You weren't seeing things Kalhoun. They did have their "teeth" cut out back when they had spines. I found an old pic of it on Wowhead: http://www.wowhead.com/npc=3106#screenshots:id=10478

The spines where removed around BC because the JCing crab trinket looked silly with spines on it, so they changed all the crabs. =(

For my baby hunter, Lyalla, my first pet assignment was the white turtle. I thought it was funny that my first pet assignment on my main hunter was a turtle too, the green one. I love turtles though so was pleased at this little coincidence! I ended up taming the Coralshell Lurker from Azshara as it was the easiest to get to. I learned this the hard way after taking the looooong way trying to get to Ghostlands to tame the white turtles there. I couldn't get past the Eastern Plaguland mobs so I gave up and found out that the ones in Azshara were so much easier! But it's challenges like that that are making me enjoy my new Alliance hunter. There are so many unknowns!

The taming was easy as I was a couple levels above the mob.
Image

I adore the WoW turtles and turtles in real life. They're so cute in a grumpy old man kind of way. I named him Stud muffin because he's rounded like a little muffin and because they belong to the Scientific order Testudines. "Stud" just stood out to me from that name so Studmuffin it is! I like the muted tones of his white shell and body. Very appropriate for a turtle or tortoise type animal:
Image

Studmuffin's idle animations are really cute. He'll move his body from side to side and streeeetch his neck out like he's looking for me. It's adorable!
Image

My baby hunter is lvl 23 and pets get their special abilities at lvl 20 so he's already a little baby tank. He also does comprable dps at this lvl so I use him a lot. His combat animations are simple, just a bite and some neck lunging. He's not great at holding aggro at this lvl though.
Image

In the water Studmuffin paddles along similar to what he does in land. He's very graceful and seems to slide right through the water.
Image

I really like this turtle and he's goona stick around with me! Turtles make great pets and every hunter should have one. Their cuteness and adorable little gestures and animations are icing on the cake....or the muffin :D !
Image

Thanks for checking out our story!

Happens to me a lot. XD

Also, in reply to your statement about turtles being both your hunters' first challenge pets: I've noticed that when people get started with these things, the system has a handful of pets it almost always rolls for newcomers. XD

Ok. So I was assigned a black bear. First let me explain my view on WoW bears. I try to be open-minded on the many of the models. But the bears just kill me. They don't look like bears. They look like "Rodents of Unusual Size" from the novel/movie "The Princess Bride."

Let me show you.

A ROUS.

Image Image

A real life black bear.

Image Image

A WoW "bear."

Image Image

I understand that WoW is fantasy and has dragons and is on another planet and whatnot. But I have a problem getting past their "bears." I just can't. I think I'm pretty forgiving of many of their models. But I do wish the bears looked more like bears.

SO! My bear is not a bear. It's a ROUS. I named him Rous.

He has a special skill, called Rest. It's very cute. He lays down and sleeps... with his eyes wide open. Awww.

Image

I've heard of how great bears are, and I decided to put Rous to the test. I spec'ed him as a pure tank, and then took him to Stonecore, to solo Slabhide. I typically use my beetle or one of my two turtles for this task.

Image

Image

He did very well! His special ability, Demoralizing Roar, really helps with tanking. I would say a properly spec'ed bear is on par with a turtle/beetle.

Demoralizing Roar has it's own animation - the bear rears up.

Image

I like Rous in a different sort of way. He's a great tank, and I have to snicker at his unintended resemblance to a monster from one of my favorite stories/movies. But I'm way too attached to my turtles (I own a tortoise in real life, and love them in game), and to my beetle (pretty scarab from Uldum). That makes three heavy duty Tenacity pets, and I have even more "dps" Tenacity pets in my stable. I just don't want a bear enough to keep Rous. I do appreciate the opportunity to try him out though, I've been meaning to try a bear for a long time but just never got around to it.

Starting with Lael, his challenge was a white ghost skinned cat, a ghost saber (Sorry for lack of screenshots, none of them seemed to come out right. :( ). I tamed Schrödinger back pre-cata, so this is more of a review than a taming story.

Image

As you can see, Schrödinger is a very pretty, see through spotted cat. I love all cats, and this skin is my absolute favorite. He's like a spirit beast that any hunter can tame once they reach level 20. :) I love questing with Schrödinger, he's a tough cat. Holds aggro really well, and things die quickly. Roar of courage is a nice little agi buff, and with prowl he completely disappears (even from me! ).

Taming one of these beauties is the tricky part. First a hopeful hunter must run to The Ruins of Mathystra in northern Darkshore (horde hopefuls need to watch out for Alliance NPCs while traveling). Once in the ruins, you must search for Mysterious Cat Figurines, little tiger statues hidden around the area that you can click on and loot. You will get a cat figurine (grey item) and a chance spawning of a ghost saber. Not every statue will spawn a ghost saber, so be prepared to spend some time searching. I had to loot 23 statues before Schrödinger made his appearance. Since a ghost saber is a spawned beastie, they have a slightly shocking quirk; after a few minutes it will drop dead. This is due to keeping the spawn timer, just cast revive pet and all will be well. :)

----------------------------------

Jandos' pet challenge was a purple skinned nether ray. The only purple ray I could tame at level 63 was "Count" Ungula, so off to Zabra'jin in Zangarmarsh I went. Count was easy to find. Directly south of the troll town, the only large, purple ray among the marshfang slicers. An easy tame, just freeze trap first, he does have a knockback ability. For some reason while taming, all I could think of was The Count from Sesame Street (WUH-UN! TUH-OOO! TH-REE!), so I wanted to name him "Count", but got the "This name is reserved" message, so I had to settle for TheCount instead.

Image

First thing I noticed were his animations. Count is very graceful, swimming through the air rather than flapping about, unlike other flying pets. Another difference from other flying pets is a lack of a loud flapflapflap, and he doesn't have large wings that can get in the way. When idle, Count just quietly bobs around, occasionally looking about. With all the eyes (those glowy spots are eyes, right? :? ) and sharp teeth he's not exactly pretty, but does have a "so ugly it's cute" charm. After taming, it was off to Terokkar for some questing.

First, I did have some aggo issues. Well, not really issues, I would pull the mob away from Count, but the mob would die long before reaching me. Multiple mobs were another tricky point, requiring some quick target changes. Again, not too much of a problem since the mobs would die pretty quick. Yea, things died quick with Count. I gotta admit I was surprised at how well he can stand up to multiple mobs, taking some damage, but not enough to be worrying.

Count really shines against caster mobs. Nether Shock will interrupt casting, and adds a nice little 2 second spell lock. I can see this being very useful in PvP (I see healers hating this), but limited to certain situations in PvE.

Overall, I like him, and plan on keeping him around for awhile. I'm still not that familiar with the Cunning tree, and think I'll have some fun playing around with specs and testing them out with Count.

-------------------

Again please? :) And hopefully I'll have better luck with screenshots this time.

Black windserpent. I can probably copy/paste the review from the white one and just switch out the pictures with images of the black one. He has the same animations as Lien and everything:

Water. Like Lien, he looks really smug here. Kind of "Hmph, I'm sooo cute in the water and you're not!":

Temmy and Sara:

No great pics of him sticking out his tongue like the white one, but the water pic is still really adorable since he looks so darn smug and snotty in it. Like he's DARING us to make fun of him. Haha. Anyway, same as white. Beautiful, wonderful animations, very graceful, nice raid buff for casters.
