You're obviously not acquainted with the battle-axes I know! :)
Lol I know right! I know so many strong powerful females that attributing those characteristics to my female pets is no stretch for me. Plus my two dog's irl, one is a male pit bull who is the biggest baby you've ever seen, the other is my german shepherd/pit mix female who is 13 years old and rules the house with an iron fist. She doesnt look pit bull at all, looks more like a coyote tbh (even though I saw her mother was a pit bull so I know for sure she's half), but noone questions how badass she is. I've had her since I first moved out on my own and she has been through so much with me.

She was this aggressive, high strung dog who me as a young woman starting out on my own, first time solely responsible for a dog, had absolutely no business owning. But we worked through it and eventually I found positive reinforcement training (as opposed to the quack debunked dominance style training) and the difference is wonderful. We've always had a bond but once I started working with her instead of against her and motivating her instead of punishing her the change in her and our bond was amazing. At 13 she still has tons of energy, my male pit bull looks so much more bad ass but she say's jump he say's how high! There is no question who is the boss between the two! That is apparant within five minutes of anyone walking in my house. I have no trouble seeing female animals as badass because I share my life with THE badass female everyday. :headbang:

I have had many wonderful female pets IRL, and I have met some very strong women as well. My views on in-game pets are not reflections on reality; it's just how I've noticed I've bonded (or haven't bonded) with in-game pets. That's all :)

It's just sorta random to me I guess... I usually just sorta 'know' when I tame a pet O.o it's rarely something I actively think about, haha. I guess of my most used pets, the following are female:
Nanda the Maddexx, Muse the blue-black/white tiger, Riven the blue OL raptor, Chrysaetos ther eagle, Maggie the black/white tiger (based off IRL pet so that one was obvious), Treble the Aotona, Indivar the Gondria (only spiritbeast I think of as having a gender, due to her being the RP ghostly remains of a former pet of my hunter's)

And the following are male:
Ricochet the black worg (also named after an IRL pet. or former pet), Orangepeel the orange fire spider, Pelee the fire turtle, Discofish the tallstrider, Raven the black wolf, Flux the blue dragonhawk, Coriander the green devilsaur

Obviously gendered animals, such as lions with manes, I think of as male by default. And a few I don't think of as having genders at all, like most of the spiritbeasts and the ghostly owl. *shrug*

if its gender is already decided by lore/NPC interaction, it remains that gender, otherwise its whatever i feel suits it ^-^

I have quite a few, so this might get big...

Image
Kyra. She's the first pet that actually "stuck" with me more than just a couple levels. She's stubborn and a bit grouchy, but never leaves my side (no, really, she's always my Slot 1 active pet) and is basically the pack matriarch.
Image
Tonka. Lazy, bit of a slob, has a habit of trying to sneak snacks from guildmates' packs. Basically a cross between a fratboy and a throwrug. But fearless when the time comes to step up.
Image
Blacklight. So named after the curious fact that most IRL scorpions glow his color under UV exposure. Skittish and a bit cowardly, with a habit of waving his claws to seem bigger - done more for his own selfconfidence than for enemy intimidation, it seems...
Image
Khepri. Discovered in Uldum, she attached herself to Wykea for reasons he's still not entirely certain about, and is protective of the old bull almost to the point of jealousy.
Image
Maleficent. Haughty, spoiled, basically a big scaly elven dramaqueen. But she's too selfish to admit she's inexperienced, so never can "overthrow" Kyra in being the "pack leader" despite her size and semi-frequent tries, often backing down quickly from the smaller green raptor when they stare each other down.
Image
Winston. Another rescue, this time from the undead-obsessed cultists of the Scarlet Monastery. The perfect example of noble breeding - strong, loyal, steadfast. Also allergic to undead; they give him sneezing fits. Maybe thats why the Scarlets let him go so easily...
Image
Ormagoden. Act-of-mercy here - a team were sent in to destroy him, but I saw a soul in need where they saw a vicious monster. He's basically a broken-bird case - gonna take a lot of work to bring him out of his shell after so much torture.

I have a few others, but haven't really gotten a "persona" for them yet.

I depends on the name I'm about to give it.

99% of my pets have mythology related names. So for example, I named my Deth'tilac Ananse, so naturally he's male, then when I captured Solix, I named it Arachne, so she's now female. :)

I think naming a pet for me is the most important thing after capturing it, so I put a lot of thought on which names fit a pet's appearance better.

Over the course of my time spent as a hunter, I usually have had female pets. Even my current stables have almost all female pets. I'm not sure why. Growing up, I have always had a cat around, and they were always female.... I have never had a male cat (hopefully someday). And I don't see males as stronger or more protective than females, in some cases in the animal world, females are very strong & protective... especially mothers (I watch too much animal planet =P). I think that even though my pets are usually girls and have girly names, doesn't make them weaker, in fact they are very protective of me (in my head). Cute on the outside, but mess with me and you're in for a surprise. Seems a lot of female players here have male pets, but not me.

Loque's mate, Har'koa, looks exactly like him, so it could be a girl if you want. True, the NPC is male, but that didn't stop me from having a female Loque once tamed. ;)

I usually let Pet Emote assign the genders for my pets. Although for Xakali, (Treylane's hyena) I decided she'd be female. In the wild, it's the lady hyenas who lead the clan, hunt, raise the kids, and boss the others around. And according to Pet Emote, Xakali IS the boss. She's not afraid of anything, and Light help you if you hurt her master.

I decide depending on the name, or looks (for example: Sambas is obviously not a female). Majority of my pets are male, but a few like Gondria is very feminine in name I often refer to it as a she. If there are no clues in the name or looks then I often just pick a gender while choosing the name. Sometimes I just pick what gender I favor like I call my Karoma a Male most of the time even if Karoma is a feminine name it doesn't shout 'Female pet' at me with how it looks.

I never really worry about it. Once I find the pet I'm after I search for a name. Shoot, I have two challenge spiders with no name right now as I haven't worked it out. Basically, once I find a name I like, that's it's gender.

That's what I do Veph! I seem to view every single creature unless it seems otherwise as male... huh. >.>;
