Thematically and proportionately, it should not even be a question. But there is a vocal minority of trolls who typically come in with variations of the line "no ugly fat chicks" and posts of anime human-painted pandas or Dofus pandawa girls.

I've seen dwarf females called morbidly obese. It's disturbing.

Especially as the majority of guys who talk like this (those that aren't perma-single basement dwellers that is) have a wife or GF who is built at ~least~ as sturdy as a dwarf female (and which is not a bad thing at all...), particularly if they have any kids.

It's like IRL they behave normally, but when they're behind a computer screen they become "Barbie Doll or GTFO" misogynists.

It's interesting, because Samwise draws bulky female bodies on a regular basis. But the first thing some hold up as proof of "skinny" is the personal holiday cards with a Pandaren child.

I went rounds with one person because she said because of those girls, Samwise would never allow his daughters to be "shamed" with a heavy female, that a loose-fitting robe was obviously "thin".

I think you could put that in the Pandaren girl's robe.

I have had no confirmation, but art I have seen by Cheeks, supposedly from "Pearl Of Pandaria", show a decidedly fluffy young girl panda. Not like the males, but for her youth she has an impressively thick neck and wrists that are not Pandawa by any stretch.

I know it's a little off the discussion, but I liked the Pandawa. Although, they are designed around a different theme. The principles were much the same, especially the drunken brawler theme. I haven't played that game in years, but i do still have fond memories of the Pandawa. This could be part of the difficulty in Blizz settling on a model for the females.

There's one side that wants to fit the chubby, almost comical nature they're going for. This side however has little to base its art around.

Then there's the skinny, more human-esque, slick Kung-fu fighter style. This side has alot of existing examples, artwork, sex appeal, and overall funness. However it does not fit the theme currently being pushed for MoP.

I for one wouldn't mind it, the extreme dimorphism between blizzards male Pandarens and the Dofus' female Pandawa would be quite striking and would have it's own charm. I can't say which one is best, but I can see the benefits and drawbacks to each. If they go for the extreme dimorphism, they accomplish an equally used model for the majority of the fanbase, but they diverge from their original view. On the other hand, if they make a "large" female that fits the current views of Pandarens pudgy fun-nes, they make a model that would not be met with equal enjoyment with the player base because most players don't play a game for realism. Unfortunately this puts the developers in a sticky situation because at the end of the day they are trying to make content for millions of players to all enjoy.

I don't think they need examples to come up with a cool female Pandaren that is consistent with the race and a good fit for the game as a whole (factoring in the dwarves whose females, while smaller than males, are still not skinny - this is the most likely paradigm for a stocky race and bears certainly fit that description).

Remember, WC3 came out 2 years before Dofus and 6 years before Kung Fu Panda, so if anything it's Blizzard that's the trendsetter there.

Hell, if you want to get technical, the Chinese have used Panda monks in several myths, so they are the originals, lol. But I agree, no one can truly say that Pandaren are copies of KFP OR Dofus, but that doesn't stop them from being heavy influences. I personally hope we get some KFP jokes for male Pandaren, as I love that movie.

Well as they say, there are only 7 original ideas in human history. That applied to plotlines but the basic premise is the same - e.g. in the realm of creative arts, pretty much anything you can think of, has been thought of before.

The point here is that of the alternative sources I've heard mentioned, Blizzard is the precursor. Sure, wow can borrow from the latecomers, just as they first borrowed from wow - KFP borrowed the basic look and feel from WC3, and improved on it with all sorts of cool martial arts stylism... which wow is now "borrowing back" to make the Pandaren even cooler. And why not?

But that's not really going to work with Dofus / pandawa, for the simple reason that A) male Pandaren are stout - that is already established, while B) Pandawa of both genders are skinny, e.g. Dofus took Blizzard's idea and developed it into something distinctly non-wow (and good on them for doing so):

i will agree that the pandaren females should be on par with the males and i think pandaren females should be near to the same height and slightly less heavy so that the females arent standing as tall as the males and arent as big as them but not skinny, btw dwarves are the 3rd smallest playable race thus far(gnome & goblin)and it should be a given that pandaren females are gonna be bigger

Fascinating discussion... I didn't know Giant Pandas were found to be real bears until I read it here either... I was still in the "related to raccoons" dark ages.

Those are some nice art concepts too. I was thinking about a body type like Princess Fiona's ogre form, and a lot of those pictures are just right.

Princess Fiona? Heck yes. She was a little heavy, but she was still scary if you were on her bad side. I loved her in the latest Shrek (whichever one it was). If pandaren females are like that, I'll be soooo happy!

I really hope the females aren't super skinny. I think it would look silly and a little top-heavy. That said, at the end of the day I'll probably just roll a male anyway like I always do. xD

I, for one, hope that Blizzard ignores the "no fat chicks" crowd (who seem to define "fat" as "anything bigger than the female human model") and goes with something like Ijomi's concepts. But I suppose that's just me.

Indeed. That was one of the things that made the first Shrek so amazing -- that for all Fiona is supposed to be huge, ugly, disgusting, etc., she actually comes across as quite appealing in her ogre form.

I loved Shrek for the simple fact that it was a kids movie in which the heroine little girls might look up to was not a skinny supermodel type. About freakin time. Young women and girls get enough of the "only skinny girls are pretty" message. That and it was funny as hell

And made more poignant by the fact that Fiona had the ability to choose between skinny/stereotypical (and not being with the one she loves forcing the one she loved to be someone he wasn't) or the "thick" look (and being with the one she loves, as he is)... and she chose option B.

Option B is win / win in my view.
