So a friend of mine had one of the scarab model beetles from uldum - I am 95% sure it was the color changer, but I am 100% sure it was a scarab beetle from uldum because he tamed it while we were questing together right after cata's release. He's the type of hunter who tames what he needs and that's it - he doesn't typically go after rares or tame multiple skins of the same pet. Anyway he hadn't used his beetle in forever but decided to bring him along while running my new hunter alt through instances. However, instead of being a scarab beetle, it was the silithid harvester. I commented on the new pet but he said it was the same beetle as before, and started dismissing and resummoning to get it to change colors (which it didn't, as t is a totally different model now). Has this happened to anyone else? After dozens of instances, it is still a silithid harvester instead of a scarab. The only reason I can think of is that maybe the model got mixed up when he faction changed his hunter over the weekend.
Well, the silithid harvester is a green scarab and a rare spawn. Not a color changer.
I dont think pets can get mixed during faction change since the pet ID stays the same.
If he hadn't used it in awhile its possible that he had tamed a different one awhile back and just doesn't remember.
Silent as night, silent as death, silent as your last breath

It was a temple scarab iirc, and yeah I know the silithid harvester is a uniquely colored rare spawn which is why I commented on it to him (he could care less about rare spawns so I was teasing him about it) but he definitely did not tame the silithid harvester. He didn't even know what that was or where it spawned. He tamed the uldum scarab (when I say scarab btw I mean the cata model of beetle rather than the shiny rounder old world version) and he never went and tamed another because he had no need for one. He doesn't care much about the color/model of his pets, only what they're useful for. Next time we run an instance I'll see if I can get the ID of his pet.
It wasn't the hoo pet because he tamed it while we quested so it was definitely that other one you guys posted from uldum
Sounds like your theory is right then, that the id somehow got jumbled while transferring. It's still REALLY odd, since the silithid harvester's id is considerably different.
He should have ended up with the sandy scarab Slapper posted.
The Temple Scarab changed to a single, tan-yellow, colour in 4.0.6, before that it was a colour-changer. It was done because tan-yellow was the only colour of scarab left that wasn't available in the game and HoO already had a colour-changer (Jeweled Scarab) for bright colours. Plus it's common out there on the sands and it kinda made sense that all those sand-dwelling scarabs would be a sandy colour. The change was made before the Sand-Husk Scarabs were added or I would have just suggested they be made that colour and the Temple ones left. By then it was too late.
The other common scarab in outdoors Uldum is the Sand-Husk Scarab that Gorman mentioned earlier. It has the old scarab look and remains a colour-changer, but the two colours look so similar in a lot of lighting conditions that it's not immediately obvious that it changes colours. It was added later, though, in 4.0.6. It sounds like your friend has this one but if he tamed it before 4.0.6 then it wouldn't fit.
He tamed it within 24 hours of cata launching and it was a temple scarab. I remember that it was a bright color changer because I liked the green phase and would ask him to resummon it until it became green. Now that it looks like a silithid harvester, it is ALWAYS green, so yay
Anyway, the question hasn't been what the beetle WAS because I was there for his taming. The question is WHY the beetle is what it is now
The NPC ids change a bunch once tamed, so not sure what to tell you, really! You're definitely right about the changed appearance, though, and most likely, why.
Just wanted to add to this, on the topic of NPC ID weirdness, I'm not 100% sure that the macro is accurate.
I used it on one of the Jormungars inside of the last of the new dungeons, Hour of Twilight I think it is. The NPC ID given me was 46336, which if I'm not mistaken, is a Ramkahen Archer? O.o I am probably doing it wrong, but if anyone else can check... >.<
