As we have a lot of people here interested in conservation, I thought this article in a Texas newspaper might be of interest.
I think the article is overly alarmist, as hunting will still be permitted; it will just now require hunting permits, limits, and government oversight.
I believe environmentalists and hunters have so many overlapping goals, even with differing motives, that it doesn't make sense to not try to work together, and true conservationists recognize this.

I don't see whats wrong with having to have to get a hunting permit. Thats what we have to here. Can't hunt deer unless you have both a hunting permit and a gun license. Do you guys have hunting seasons there? as in can't hunt deer/antilope/bigfoot in a certain time of the year (Kinda stupid here I mean deer are not helping the wildlife so why do we let them breed XD)

We have seasons in my state and I believe you atleast have to have a gun permit to hunt. I live on the edge of a big forest and during hunting season animals tend to hang out in our back yard because its Illegal to hunt on our property.cowmuflage wrote:I don't see whats wrong with having to have to get a hunting permit. What I'm unclear on is what the article means by "unfettered ability"; Texas has hunting license requirements and hunting seasons like any other state... so I'm assuming this "fettering" goes beyond that else there'd be no fuss. But without knowing exactly how far beyond, it's hard to speculate on whether it's an overreaching "treehugger" law, or if the gazelle farmers are just being greedy and dramatic.
Either way, I think the proof will be in what happens to the actual population numbers over the next few years - because if the farmers are right, and those 3 species are headed back into extinction, then I think either the environmentalists should start (privately) funding their own herd regrowth programs, or else the restrictions should be relaxed in light of the fact that hunting would be the only way for the species to grow enough to no longer be endangered... ironically enough.
