My purple spider - I had to join and tell

Unread post by Garithas »

Hi. I've been using this site for quite a while, including when I tamed Deth'tilac, the purple fire spider of Molten Front, and because the story is so cool I figured there's just no better place to share it. So I just made this forum account and I hope that I'm posting in the right place. And that you'll enjoy the story.

So, okay, I had woken up in the middle of the night due to a bad cough I had and couldn't get back to sleep. I figured I'd go ahead and get my Molten Front dailies out of the way and hopefully be able to sleep after. I forget why I was wandering around, but imagine my excitement when I was passing by that tower that you help those druids take every day and I saw a hint of giant purple spider legs through a crack in the scenery.

I knew this was a rare, tameable spawn and I could have just attempted, died, then decided to look up strategy so that I could say that I tried to figure it out on my own first, but lazy me - I decided to skip the dying part and just get to reading.

The most viable strategy apparently required a druid. I was the only night owl in my guild at that moment, however, and none of my friends were on, so I looked at solo strategies. The whole "send another pet in as a sacrifice" seemed sound, but my haste isn't where I want it to be and I had my doubts. Someone else, however, said they managed to kite it without doing that, so I figured if I could do it even a few times and then revive the pet enough to dismiss it, I might be able to pull it off.

That didn't quite work. Even with ice trap, I couldn't revive my pet fast enough to keep away from the slowly moving Deth'tilac. Returning from the graveyard for the third time, I despaired. The idea of sleep was gone from my vocabulary and all I cared about was this damned, beautiful spider that it seemed I was going to have to give up. Still none of my guildies on at that moment.

A thought I'd been trying not to entertain came to my mind in full force. I hit O and looked at the Who tab. There were about six druids listed. Three of them were level 85. Two of them were in instances. The third was in Stormwind, but did I really want to just whisper to some random person and ask them for help? I looked at the purple spider legs.

Checking my gold, I saw that I had 999 in total at that moment. I'd recently spent a bunch and I didn't want to offer it all because, as they say, it takes money to make money. I whispered to this druid I'd never met, "Excuse me. Got a moment?"

Damn. They were AFK. I looked at those giant legs like fiery purple daggers and was about to say goodbye to them. I felt a special bond with them.

Suddenly, I get a whisper. "Sure! What's up?" YES! All right, so I go into my explanation, saying that I'm offering 500g and all they have to do is to spam entangling roots as often as they could. I was still explaining when they replied, "omw".

You think I was excited before? I felt like wetting my pants at this point. So I start talking strategy with this wonderful person and they say, "Let's go." This was going to be awesome.

It was a mighty battle, but it failed. I won't go into too much detail (mainly because I don't remember much detail about that first attempt), but I figured this druid had earned beyond the 500g I'd offered. I was going to give them all I had at that point and was telling them so when they said, "Come on! Let's go again!" Ah, a person after my own heart.

I think it took two more tries (this time, the failure being reviving my pet in time to dismiss it so I could tame), but finally, the taming process took and that red health bar turned into a violet one and my new spider crawled to my side.

Likely, I don't need to tell anyone here how I felt at that point. I was going to give this druid all I had and then make more so I could pay them more. The trade window shut down before I could even put in the gold I was going to give. "You're not going to refuse payment, are you?" I asked. "You don't make new friends by charging them," my new druid friend replied.

I named my new spider after this new druid friend (adding "two" to the end of the name for convenience reasons) and did a couple of heroic HoT dungeons with them, then finally logged to take a short nap before I got started with the day. A new rare pet and an even more rare friend. I think I did pretty damn well that morning.

Awww...I love making new friends from tames. Made lots of friends on my druid that way, and many on my hunter as well.

That's a wonderful story! Congrats!!! And what a kind soul to help you out without taking your money in return! That sadly seems like a rare kind of person these days.

Do you have pictures? :)

I agree. A very kind player to help you out with your tame. Congrats on both the tame and earning a new friend. We need more people like them on WoW.

Haha. Awhile back I saw Deth up on MG and thought I'd give a shot at taming him. There was someone else that had gotten there a couple seconds before me, though, and I didn't actually want Deth too much on that alt, so I helped her get him instead. I'd much MUCH rather a rare go home with a hunter than end up as a Tear at a vendor, personally.

someday I'll find someplace to host a sig that isn't stupid money-grubbing photobucket

Thanks for all the responses. Glad you guys enjoyed the story.

As for a screenshot, I don't have one of the event itself (was too caught up in the moment... and lack of sleep). However, just this morning, I also caught Kirix, the green one. Man, have I gotten lucky recently. Anyway, so after that tame, I did two screenshots of the spot where I tamed that one and messed with it in GIMP until I came up with this:

Makes a nice picture, I think, but I might redo it a little closer.

Oh, I might add that this morning I came across Deth'tilac again. I looked for an 85 hunter, found one, and he came as quickly as he could. An orc hunter got the first hit in JUST in time. I hated that I dragged this one dude all the way there for nothing, but I'd have been otherwise glad if the orc got it.

The orc dude had an excellent strategy that *almost* worked. He kited the thing back to near the entrance... where the NPC druids started attacking it, including casting entangling roots on it. I've no idea why I didn't think of that (though I'm glad I didn't, considering the outcome). Unfortunately, the orc got backed up to the Furnace and had to stop. I watched a bit until I saw the guy had died, then tried to send my pet in to attack and keep it going in case he could come back. Don't know if that would have worked or not, but I lagged for a few seconds and when my connection caught up, I was dead and Deth'tilac was dead.

Still, a really cool strategy. I hope both of those hunters have better luck in the future.
