Confused about ranged/melee weapons...

I'm soooo confused. I know they are taking away melee weapons...but how willthe compensate for stat loss exactly? Will ranged weapon damage be going up? Will ranged stats go up? And what was all that stuff about kill shot, arcane shot, etc %weapon dmg going down?

as far as i read on the beta forums, ranged weapons will be given the stats of 2handers essentially... as far as enchants for ranged weapons to make up for loss of enchants like mighty agility, so far i haven't seen any news

Ranged Weapons in MoP
There are two issues here getting muddled together:

Ranged weapons will have the stat budgets of two-handed weapons. You can treat them as two-handed weapons in most respects. That work hasn't been done yet.

Ranged weapons are not going to be compensated for the loss of stats from no longer having a melee weapon equipped simultaneously. This is because all ranged-weapon slot type things have gone away, so everyone is affected evenly. However, we also want your damage when you log in for the first time to be about the same as it is now, so overall your damage will be compensated in a sense.

Yeah, it's dumb.

Better way of putting it: Everyone only gets one weapon in MoP. We get to keep the equivalent of the 2h's stats. The stats we formerly had on our ranged weapons were closer to the stats distributed on wands, thrown weapons, etc.

on a side note thought that we were going to be able to use staves/polearms for transmog purposes but only a ranged slot is available from what I saw.. has that changed? or are they going to make it so that you can equip it just for purposes to RP..

Not transmog, no. Ranged can only be Ranged. We can just equip them for RP purposes. I don't think it was ever listed to transmog a polearm into a ranged weapon or vice versa.

Not transmog, no. Ranged can only be Ranged. We can just equip them for RP purposes. I don't think it was ever listed to transmog a polearm into a ranged weapon or vice versa.

This. People just got confused. There's basically a single weapon slot that ranged and melee go in, so you can swap in a 2h for RP purposes, but none of your ranged skills are going to work, so there's no way you're going to be using it in combat.

well.. that sucks.. I really like how interesting some of the 2-h weapons can look.. I am not a RP person at all.. so I guess ill be selling all my interesting 2-h items. Its going to take me quite awhile to get used to my chars without it especially since its such a prominent looking item. All ive gotta say is that blizz better be making some really nice looking guns/bows..

Read RP as "wear for screenshotting purposes" rather than literal RP.

I mean I understand for screenshots but most people arent going to go out of there way to get said things just for screenshots.. I am going to miss my flaming polearm.. it was firery..

Eh, people already have done so for existing sets. It's the new sets that most people won't put themselves out for.

Also agreed. And I wish they could find a way to display ranged weapons slung across the back (and yes it could be done, it's just a question of whether they have the time available, which they may not).

Running around with nothing but like a quiver is about as appealing as a bread sandwich*.



*A bread sandwich is 2 slices of bread with a 3rd in between.

Havn't we seen some shots of people with crossbows slung on their backs already? It was a little glitchy as I recall, but they seem to be working on it.

Seems promising - though I do hope we don't end up having to choose between displaying backslung ranged weapons, and our cloaks...
