poor Veronica Cartwright... they didn't TELL her that blood would squirt so far. They just told her, in more or less vague terms, what would happen.

so yes, the actress is actually reacting in, well, much the same way the audience is reacting!

'Telling them vaguely what would happen' is actually kind of an overstatement.

The people around the dinner table in Alien weren't really told a damn thing except that there'd be some kind of 'attack'. The whole chestburster thing and the violent convulsions were pretty much totally unexpected by the actors. So yeah... all those looks of shock and nauseated horror? Pretty much totes genuine.

Alien was great... being able to make a really good, really believable movie WITHOUT CGI. Just a very very skinny man in a suit and stunning camera work.

I really hate the over-reliance on CGI... no matter how good it is it still makes everything look like a video game. Maybe a game with superior graphics, but still a video game. That's one of the things I liked about the Harry Potter movies... use CGI for the crap that needs to be CGI and use freakin' physical effects for the stuff that -doesn't-.

someday I'll find someplace to host a sig that isn't stupid money-grubbing photobucket

And Lord of the Rings, I feel. The CGI is, A) Very well done I think, and B) Not that extensive.

Yup agreed - when used alongside RL actors and such, CGI tends to be better left for non-organic things.

Although it has to be said, if you do the ~entire movie~ in CGI, it can work if the CGI is top notch.

For example Polar Express et al.

(And although not a movie per se, the cinematics I've seen so far for Diablo III would make a kick@$$ movie if it was expanded to a feature length version). :D

FF7 Advent Children is pretty badass I think, including the CGI, not just the story.

I am super stoked about this film! I am a HUGE Aliens fangirl and have been geeking out over this movie since I first viewed its trailer on YouTube. My husband on the other hand ... not so much. He has a very hard time handling anything "scary" and has made it quite clear to me that he has no intention of ever seeing it  . It's a shame too, because I love, love, LOVE scary movies/psychological thrillers! I practically grew up on them.

I'm hoping one of my friends or a group of friends might want to go see it with me before I start working a second job and have to sacrifice my free time more than I already do.

Niabi: don't expect too much. I didn't find it that scary.

I LOVED it. Totally. There was some powerful stuff in the script.

But it wasn't anywhere near as scary as Alien was.

ROFL either that or I'm just becoming jaded in my old age! I still loved the movie.

I'm more of a thriller kind of guy personally as I tend to find action movies not-scary-enough, but find horror movies too-scary. The things that tend to particularly get me about horror movies are when A) they actually instill a sense of bleak hopelessness :P (e.g. "true horror" I guess you could say), and / or B) the characters are all or mostly bastards who don't make me want to root for their survival in the first place.

Unless it has techno eye candy or something else that piques my fancy - I can be distracted and forget to be spooked if there is something for me to geek out over - for the Aliens series (again, not including the unwanted and unwelcome predators who belong in their own series imho), the HR Giger imagery (notably A1) and technology (notably A2) did it for me... also speaking of horror movies that I still loved, there is Angel Heart (creepy-cool voodoo), and Cloverfield... which I absolutely adore for a raft of other reasons.

Just confirmed they have Prometheus on 3d in my local pub / theater, so I'm gonna see if I can set up a guys night out with my buddy (MiB3 is out also so I can see that with the wife). :)

I didn't think it would be but my husband is determined that it is. I figured that if one has seen all of the Alien movies they'd already have a good shot at knowing how some of the more gruesome scenes will be played out. It's a discussion we've thrown back and forth ever since I saw the trailer.

I saw it with my husband as well, who is normally a great horror film fanatic.

but in this case, the ambiguity of the storyline and the disproportionate ratio of "posed questions" to "answered questions" sort of turned him off to the story. I, on the other hand, loved walking out of the film trying to figure out things and wondering what things meant.

another detail, which I have no idea if it is due to the cinema we attended or if it's the way the movie was filmed, but to both of us, the 3D was NOT well-done. My suspicions lie with the theatre, rather than the film itself. There was a lot of visual doubling, and lots of artifacts, which really took away from the enjoyment of the film. Where the 3D worked, however, it was AMAZINGLY well-done. Like in Avatar. It was unobtrusive, it added depth, and was never gimmicky.

That's what I'm looking forward to, and this was also a big part of why I liked Cloverfield so much.

I have to disagree with that. Ignore the shitfests that are the two AVP movies those are a disgrace to both franchises BUT the AVP comics and games are wonderful! I really don't see why they did not go with the plot of one of those instead of what they did.

Or at least Superman & Batman Vs Aliens & Predators. That was a cool comic >.>

You could be right about that - I never really gave the comics a chance (they were sort of picking up with the predator comics about when I stopped collecting comics - it was one expensive habit too many!) xD

Although it's not that I disliked predator so much as I didn't think it mixed well with Aliens. But again, maybe I'd feel differently if I'd read the comics.

Hah - wife just called and said we've got a babysitter for tonight, and I'm informed that I will be seeing Prometheus with her not my buddy. :D

Ok, just saw it.

Basically, I liked it overall, but the wife didn't.

My thoughts here for those interested - includes lots of spoilers, so I wanted to put it in its own thread. :)
