If you could own a prehistoric pet(s), what would it be?
The title is self-explanatory, if you could own any prehistoric pet(s), what would it be? You may also post the care you would provide it. Mine would be;
Smilodon (Would have a pack of them)
Cage: 100ft long, 130ft wide, 90ft tall. Almost like a zoo exhibit, it would be like the enclosures that you look down into instead of looking at it.
Terrain: Natural dirt collected from the South American Savannah, were they originated.
Hide: Large man made burrows, much like a bears den.
Food and Water: Bison and Horses, things they ate that are still alive today. He/She with get his water from a rocky pond.
Flora and Fauna: Dung beetles to clean up the poop. Monkey Puzzle Trees and tall grasses for them to feel happy and hide. Vultures and Buzzards will pick there leftovers clean. Termites colonies will also be there to simulate a natural environment for them.
Enrichment: Mechanical Bull with a mechanical beating heart it in attached to a fake jugular, so they can feel like they're killing something. Stumps for them to sharpen there claws OR if they're a male, mark his territory.
Decorations: Rocks, Termite Hills, and other landforms will simulate an environment suitable for them.
Charcharodontosaurus (Two, one male, one female)
Cage: 10,000ft long, 10,000ft wide, and 100ft tall. This could be seen as a miniature natural park.
Terrain: A mixture of sand, and dirt from places they're from; Argentina and Northern Africa.
Hide: They can hide under a tree, and that's about it.
Food and Water: Elephants, Rhinos, Hippos, pretty much everything under the sun. Water will be supplied with a large pond with large fish in it for them to eat.
Flora and Fauna: Dung beetles to clean up the poop. Plants currently unknown, may use birds as an example for plants. Buzzards and Vultures or smaller dinosaurs will eat leftover food.
Enrichment: Live Food. Things for them to chew on, like modern day birds.
Decorations: Rocky slopes and hills, caves for the young to hide in, plenty of small animals for them to hunt.
Mosasaurids of all subfamilies.
Cage?: A VERY large saltwater pond, not too deep, I want to see them and all. The pond can be the size of a shallow bay.
Terrain: Live sand from a pet store, for a healthy ecosystem.
Hide: Cave systems, aquatic plants.
Food and Water: Shellfish, Large Fish, Cetaceans (Dolphins and Whales), and eachother.
Flora and Fauna: Algae from a healthy and natural look, fish like the Indo-Pacific Ceolocanth and small sharks for them to prey on. Saltwater Crocodiles, and the occasional dolphin pod.
Enrichment: Live Prey, and a Seal Dummy so they can chase after it, rough it up, and get a good bit of exercise. Could train them like seals and do things like balancing a beach ball on there snout or swimming with them.
Decorations: Plenty of live rocks for them to hide in as caves, plenty of aquatic plants growing in a large number to feed the animals living in the pond.
Argentavis Magnificens
Cage: Part of the Missouri Bluff and a large grassland inside a park. (The bird(s) will have a tracking device and will be trained to come by name)
Terrain: Whatever is there already.
Hide: Caves, trees.
Food and Water: Large animals they used to eat like Rhinos, Horses, Big Cats, Camelids, Buffalo, all sorts of things. A large river for it them to drink from.
Flora and Fauna: The animals they eat, dung beetles to clean up after it all. Trees found in both South America AND Africa, such as Monkey Puzzle.
Enrichment: Hunting, puzzles like they do with parrots and crows.
Decorations: The Missouri Bluff, a large rocky cliff face, a large river, and monkey puzzles.

I think I would like a MircoRaptor

Since childhhod I always wished I could Fly, had so many dreams I could and still to this day wish I could. I'm a bit of a speed junky too, I'm not one to walk slow and really enjoy sports that require speed and agility over brute force (Gymnastics, badminton, etc.) That said, a Mircoraptor would just appeals to me in every aspect, It's not massive (in fact they are quite tiny), nor are they the "Mr Destructo" of the prehistoric world, yet I still think they are awesome.

Oh and a Haast's Eagle too. What? you can't have the worlds only wingless and tallest bird without the worlds largest eagle too!
There is that problem of it eating the Moa seeing as that's what it would do in the wild and it's big enough to eat me too :S

Re: If you could own a prehistoric pet(s), what would it be?
Haast Eagles are documented to have eaten humans (Cave paintings/Fossil records). Personally, I wouldn't risk it, even if I want to second longest predatory dinosaur, the most successful predatory aquatic reptile, and one of the most successful predatory big cats ever, I STILL wouldn't risk it unless I had proper caging and a weapon on me.cowmuflage wrote:Oh and a Haast's Eagle too. However, you're talking to a guy who wants all of the stuff above PLUS the largest flying bird ever.
ARGENTAVIS MAGNIFICENS! (Cryptozoologist think that the ''Thunderbird'' that people see in Illinois, Texas, Alaska, etc are these birds that are still thriving today, even though they are a few thousand miles away from Argentina, maybe they migrate?)

Re: If you could own a prehistoric pet(s), what would it be?
While I love gigantic dinosaurs, if I was going to have a prehistoric pet I think I'd prefer things of a more manageable, cuddly size.
I'd love a dwarf elephant, such as Elephas falconeri, which lived up till only relatively recent (prehistoric) times on Sicily and Malta, or a dimetrodon, many of which were really only the size of very big lizards, or a pterodactyl, which was one of the smaller pterosaurs and wouldn't be hard to handle
If I was going to go for large it'd be a triceratops or a plesiosaur. I've always had a soft spot for both of them, ever since I was a young kid
Though the Microraptor that SB posted is truly gorgeous!

Not tryin' to be a party pooper, but the biggest fish ever goes to Leedsichthys, a large fish that grew from 30ft long, to 100ft long.Gimlion wrote:Megaladon, the world's biggest, nastiest fish ever known.

Wiki says they're maximum size was likely closer to 16 meters, (53 feet), making them around the same size as Megaladon. Still, C. Mega is definitely the title holder for Nastiest.Crotalus Horridus wrote:Not tryin' to be a party pooper, but the biggest fish ever goes to Leedsichthys, a large fish that grew from 30ft long, to 100ft long.Gimlion wrote:Megaladon, the world's biggest, nastiest fish ever known.

Mine would be a stegosaurus all the way. They've been my favorite dinosaur for about as long as I can remember.

Dire Wolf FTW! Kinda surprised no one mentioned it yet.

Also Proailurus. He was a little bigger then a house cat.

And of course Allosaurus

Re: If you could own a prehistoric pet(s), what would it be?
I don't know about a dire wolf. Real wolves are kind of hard to control, so a mega wolf would really be hard.
Re: If you could own a prehistoric pet(s), what would it be?
....Ok I swear im not trying to be mean, I just think its funny...We are all talking about fantasmal ideas for pets....we have people that chose giant super predators such as Charcaradontis, and Spinosaurus, and giant sharks...and you comment on the wolf the size of a pony lol. I think the wolf would be the LEAST of someones worries in a park with all our pets hahah.Raindra wrote:I don't know about a dire wolf.
