Re: Tears will be shed
I thought reading the fan fic comic of Doraemon's end was the saddest, I think this one about Scooby hit me right in the childhood as well.Redith wrote:/cry. /cry

I'm not usually cold like this, but I found it manipulative in the worst way.
Didn't make me cry at all.

I'm not sure why you feel that way, its very sad. Thinking of some of the most iconic characters in history and knowing that now that you're older it was inevitible that Scooby would die eventually..

It didn't even register with me that that was the gang from Scooby-Doo. I must be more tired than I thought! Didn't make me cry, though. : /

Re: Tears will be shed
I didnt even know it was scooby doo to begin with until i read the comments >_>;; Unfortunately, as much as i did love the shows and movies which were part of my daily tv viewing growing up, i dont really feel for this comic cause people keep pumping out new scooby doo shows all the time. There are so many out there, and cause i had a disconnection with the comic cause i didnt know it was about scooby, that i just have no feeling for it.
It would of been better to my eyes and heart if the artist was more clear on where the inspiration and/or characters were from and if it was of something that actually did have tragic scenes throughout the show, or started out happy and cheery and slowly worked its way through turmoil and then to tragedy. Scooby doo is always, always happy and cheery, its a young childrens tv show.

Re: Tears will be shed
I got that it was Scooby Doo from the start, just by the outlines of the characters. And although I didn't cry, it did make me pretty sad. This is a comic I can relate to. Losing a canine best friend is one of the worst things. =/

Re: Tears will be shed
I found the death of Seymour in Futurama considerably more touching.
It's not that ScoobyDoo dying isn't sad. I didn't like the style of the cartoon strip. To me, it had a deliberately manipulative style to it. From the very first frame it felt like one of those "feed the poor starving children in Africa" commercials on TV.

Aw, man, why'd you have to bring up Jurrasic Bark? *That* was a sad way for a pet to go.
This, on the other hand is pure awesome.

That broke my heart. At the time I couldn't believe they did that. It was uncharacteristically sad for the show. Nothing else has ever come close. But of course there was more to it...Sukurachi wrote:I found the death of Seymour in Futurama considerably more touching.

in the context of that Futurama episode, Seymour's death was a part of the narrative. Of course the end was heart-breaking.
I think I cried for half an hour after seeing that episode.
The ScoobyDoo one could have been done to IMMENSE effect. In my opinion - and it's really nothing more than my opinion - this comic strip didn't achieve that effect. For me, what didn't work, was there was no contextualization. It was an attempt at a "what-a-twist" ending.
Just starting us off with Shaggy mourning sort of takes the directionality of the narrative out. We are given the emotional impact in advance of knowing WHY there should be an emotional impact. In my opinion, that is poor writing.

I kept the ones I referenced animal-specific for the sake of the topic but I know there are plenty of Disney movies that do this same thing to me every single time!
Forgot one more: The scene in Fox and the Hound when the lady takes Todd to the forest so that he can live out his adulthood with his own kind.

I've never seen that episode, but I just read about it. Just READING it made me all teary-eyed. That's so sad!!! Poor Seymour. He waited all those years for a master that never came home. *sobs*Sukurachi wrote:I found the death of Seymour in Futurama considerably more touching.
