I can't even get that to work.. >.< I have it downloaded but I don't know how to open it or what. *sigh* And I really don't want to flip through the threads to look for it right now if someone had the same problem.

Its a zip file, so you have to extract the files. Should come up automatically. Extract them directly into your PetEmote folder in your addons folder.Sachelle wrote:I can't even get that to work.. >.< I have it downloaded but I don't know how to open it or what. *sigh* And I really don't want to flip through the threads to look for it right now if someone had the same problem.

Re: PetEmote Addon - Basilisks, Water Striders, etc
So, I've been listening to recording of the big cats, since the "meow" discussion. Blizz only knows what ours are, but there are clearly tigers (which roar), lions (which rumble and chuff), pumas (which sound like housecats....), cheetahs (which purr and chirp), leopards (which grunt), lynxes (which yowl) and maybe servals (which make a funny singing noise)
So, instead of all meows, I'm going to change them up a bit. Roar, rumble, chuff, meow, purr, growl, hiss, chirp, yowl, grunt.
Also, after much procrastinating, felhunters have gender again and the new minions have.....something anyway

What do I with quilen? Are they dog-like? Cat-like? Bear-like? What would you like to see? Right now, they're kinda cat-like, and snooty cause apparently I can't set moods right when I'm in a hurry. I'm infatuated with quilen, but not with the emotes.....
Personally, I see them as sort of, oh, what are those gigantic black dogs? Newfoundlands? The really big, bearlike ones. But with some cat-like tendencies.

Quilen are more doglike than anything else, real guardian types. Moodiness can somewhat reflect their origin as Mogu pets, although whether that suits the personality of most quilen is another story. I think of them as a proud species on the whole.

First let me say, your work on these emotes is awesome and much appreciated Teigan. Really bringing our pets alive even more.
About the Quillen, I agree with Kalliope. I liked the proudness/surliness/moodiness/dog-ishness of them. The new emote update seems to have taken a big chunk of that away, it seems to be behaving more catlike now, which, for me anyway, is not how I imagine them to be.

Ok, I will keep this in mind. Thank you for the feedback! (and I agree. I think I made them too neutral.)

It's okay Teigan. :3 Sometimes you don't know something til it's live and people voice their thoughts on it (Blizz's patches for example. Even when tested on the PTR, there's still always feedback and changes once it goes live)

Re: PetEmote Addon - Basilisks, Water Striders, etc
Since the Quilen are modeled after the Chinese guardian lions called the Shishi, They should be more cat-like than dog but not as much as regular cats. I'd say two thirds cat and one third dog.Teigan wrote:What do I with quilen? Are they dog-like? Cat-like? Bear-like? What would you like to see? It just annoys me to see them referred to as dogs which they clearly are not.

Actually they remind me more of the Chinese Fu-Dogs....which they are called Lion Dogs for a good reason.Danielfboone wrote:Since the Quilen are modeled after the Chinese guardian lions called the Shishi, They should be more cat-like than dog but not as much as regular cats. The Fu-Dogs are the Westernized representation of the Shishi and it is not an accurate one.Junrei wrote:Actually they remind me more of the Chinese Fu-Dogs....which they are called Lion Dogs for a good reason.Danielfboone wrote:Since the Quilen are modeled after the Chinese guardian lions called the Shishi, They should be more cat-like than dog but not as much as regular cats. Of course we know Wikipedia isn't the best source, but we aren't writing a thesis
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foo_Dog
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_guardian_lion
Those look alot like quilen.
Also, basic characteristics:
clearly mammalian
has a long tail, whiskers, ears
Those could be cat or dog.
Has a mane - that leans towards lions very strongly
Fighting stance and style - definitely feline, attacks with claws
Between looking at how they act, and the history of shishi in China, I am more and more convinced we are in fact dealing with a type of lion. Fu dog seems to be a "lost in translation/mistranslation/metaphor for poofy asian breeds of dog" term.
I've half a mind to open a ticket or post on the *shudder* official blizz forums asking "just WHAT is a quilen?"
Oh, and a shishi, aka imperial lion. It screams "quilen"

It's not a misinterpretation.
It's their actual name. Just translated differently. If another country called an apple an orange, that doesn't make them wrong. That's their word for it.
I'd say why not? However, Allow me to point out the Lucky Quilen Cub. It barks...like a dog...when clicked on. I think that pretty much answers our question, does it not? Don't believe me? Come see me on Moon Guard. I'll letcha click on Smudge(tis what I named him). ;3
Also another thing I thought of when I saw "Shishi" - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shitzu
Tis a dog and they do have manes of sorts that need to be kept. Long tail(for a small dog anyway) too. They were bred to be companions and I think their predecessor, the Lhasa Apso, was bred to be guard dogs, considering how loud their barks are.

Some pertinent quotes from the articles I linked
In reference to the shishi:
In reference to the Shih Tzu:
I believe you that your quilen cub barks. By all appearances, they used the perky pug skeleton for it and probably the sound file as well. However, just because a mini pet barks does not make a lie of well documented history and etymology.

In reference to the shishi:
Western names
In English and several Western languages, the guardian lions are often referred in a multitude of name such as: "Fu Dogs",[2] "Foo Dogs", "Fu Lions", "Fo Lions", and "Lion Dogs".[3] The term "Fo" or "Fu" may be transliterations to the words 佛 (pinyin: fó) or 福 (pinyin: fú), which means "buddha" or "prosperity" in Chinese, respectively. However, Chinese reference to the guardians lion are seldom prefixed with 佛 or 福, and more importantly never referred to as "dogs".
Reference to guardian lions as dogs in Western cultures may be due to the Japanese reference to them as "Korean dogs" (狛犬・高麗犬) due to their transmission from China through Korea into Japan. It may also be due to the misidentification of the guardian lion figures as representing certain Chinese dog breeds such as the Chow Chow (鬆獅犬, Pinyin: sōngshī quǎn, lit. "puffy-lion dog") or Shih Tzu (獅子狗; Pinyin: Shīzi Gǒu, lit. "lion dog").
In reference to the Shih Tzu:
The name Shih Tzu comes from the Chinese word for "lion" because this kind of dog was bred to resemble "the lion as depicted in traditional oriental art,"[1] such as the Chinese guardian lions. (There is also the Pekingese breed, called "lion dog" in Chinese). "Shih Tzu" is the Wade-Giles romanization the Chinese characters 獅子, meaning lion
Also, my thoughts on Blizzard's accuracy when it comes to animals can be summed up in one word: bats. Granted, the shishi is not a "real" animal, but is certainly based on one. There are various theories of the origins of today's breed. Theories relate that it stemmed from a cross between Pekingese and a Tibetan dog called the Lhasa Apso.
I believe you that your quilen cub barks. By all appearances, they used the perky pug skeleton for it and probably the sound file as well. However, just because a mini pet barks does not make a lie of well documented history and etymology.

Re: PetEmote Addon - Updated emotes. Now posted. - Nov 20
I think we've long been aware of how different certain WoW species are from their real world counterparts. Neither is wrong; they are merely different.
My take on it is this: I wouldn't expect a WoW chimera to have lion-like traits despite its portrayal in Greek mythology or a WoW basilisk to act like any other portrayal of a basilisk.
From what I've seen, WoW quilen seem to behave more like dogs overall, though they still clearly have a lionlike mane. That does not change anything about their original inspiration. This is just what Blizzard's take on them is. Personally, I prefer PetEmote to be consistent with what Blizzard's put into the game, but that's me.
