Gnome Hunter starts with fox?
Ethereal Hunter starts with warp stalker? or nether ray? or sporebat?
Centaur starts with hyena? carrion bird?
Ogre starts with scorpid? hyena?
Naga starts with crocolisk? basilisk?
Mogu Hunter starts with a goat? or porcupine?
Arrakoa starts with a bird of prey?

Arakkoa definitely would start with a bird of prey, using one of the kaliri skins.
I'm thinking Ogres would start with a clefthoof but since they would most likely be classified as rhinos (which are exotic) that's a bit of a logistical puzzle. Wind serpents then?
For a gnome, I think a ravager would be perfect. "But, Zhinru, how the hell did they get one?" As your gnome hunter ventures out towards surface, he will notice new level 1 NPCs spawning around that part of Gnomeregan. "Irriadiated Cockroaches", using the model of a Ravager.
For a naga, I would love a snap dragon. They're kind of... fish cats they used in Warcraft III. Not present in WoW so far. Or maybe a wind serpent using a couatl model (couatls are another of their signature beasts from WC3 not present in WoW).
If a mogu were to be a hunter, they would HAVE to have a quilen. That makes me think, maybe have an odd racial that allows one race to tame and keep one exotic family in non-BM spec, but have it lose the exotic ability.

Gnomes would have a bunny :3

Siggy under construction!

I would say Mogu would get quilen, but they're exotic.
Furbolg = bear...?
Tuskarr would get a walrus. (now I want a walrus pet), and Yaungol would get a goat or yak

Gnomes should have rats. Porcupines are the closest things in-game.

Sporelings = Sporebats
Arrakoa = Kaliri
Ogre = Depends on the particular clan I suppose. Stonemaul seems the most likely so I'd say Crocolisk
Taunka = Polar Bear
Hozen = Tigers!
Jinyu = Water Striders, which damn well shouldn't be exotic anyway
Kobold = Hyena
Quilboar = Boar
Broken = Warp Stalker or Outland Basilisk
Tuskarr = Wolf/Husky
Furbolg = Bears or Wolves
Worgen = That bitchin were-horse concept someone on the mmo forums did a few years back. Pft, running wild be damned.

Mantids definitely would have a Scorpid.
Also, anyone else has any opinions of my idea how to bypass exotics as starter pets?
