As far as I heard they are tameable, but require learning something.
What would a hunter need? Is there anyway I can pre-patch prepare to get it?

In order to tame them you have to get a somewhat rare book that drops from the Dinomancers on the Isle which will teach you the ability. Other than gearing up your character to make grinding them easier, there's not much you can do beforehand. It's just RNG waiting for one of the tomes to drop.
