I'm telling you, "thunder bird" sounds to me like it should be under "elemental birds" with phoenixes and stuff.Wain wrote:Actually, it won't matter as I won't include these birds until/unless we find out what they'd be classified as

They're beasts, scavenger birds, and possess no real special elemental abilities.Zhinru wrote:I'm telling you, "thunder bird" sounds to me like it should be under "elemental birds" with phoenixes and stuff.Wain wrote:Actually, it won't matter as I won't include these birds until/unless we find out what they'd be classified as
They're called "Thunderbirds" because I'm guessing it's easier to type than "Isle of Thunder Bird"
Also, Thunderbirds are mythical giant birds.

Re: Throne of Thunder beasts to check!
They use a slightly modified "Pandaren phoenix" model, and a general phoenix animation skeleton as well as their association with the Isle of Thunder, which makes me think they're related to the phoenixes.Equeon wrote:They're beasts, scavenger birds, and possess no real special elemental abilities.

The Pterrorwings use a modified Proto-drake skeleton, and the Mantid Tanks use the Silithid Colossus skeleton, but they aren't related in the slightest.Zhinru wrote:They use a slightly modified "Pandaren phoenix" model, and a general phoenix animation skeleton as well as their association with the Isle of Thunder, which makes me think they're related to the phoenixes.Equeon wrote:They're beasts, scavenger birds, and possess no real special elemental abilities.

Ji-Kun:
Doesn't sound like a semi-intelligent elemental bird that harnesses the power of fire to me."The reek of decay lured many scavengers to the refuse pit, including the great Ji-Kun. Ruthless and cunning, the monstrous bird devoured her rivals one-by-one until she held sole dominion over the shadowy tunnel."
Ji-Kun's abilities are only what one would expect from a giant bird, there are no elemental abilities or anything else.
Considering all currently existing thunderbirds are related to this behemoth, I think it's safe to say that the entire species can be generalized this way.
The Pandaren phoenixes really aren't mentioned in any official lore, but I think they're called "phoenixes" only because they, in turn, use the Ashes of Al'ar skeleton. It seems like a colloquial name, just like a firefly isn't really a fly.
Re: Throne of Thunder beasts to check!
They're actually called "pandaren phoenix" in game, and those birds look very much like them. Intelligent or not, the only in-game evidence points towards them being some kind of phoenix.

I know, that's why I said "I think they're called "phoenixes" only because they, in turn, use the Ashes of Al'ar skeleton."Zhinru wrote:They're actually called "pandaren phoenix" in game, and those birds look very much like them. I'm only arguing this point because I hope they'll be tameable some day.
Re: Throne of Thunder beasts to check!
You said that because you said a completely different thing?Equeon wrote:I know, that's why I said "I think they're called "phoenixes" only because they, in turn, use the Ashes of Al'ar skeleton."![]()
It's not ONLY because of a skeleton. Skeleton is a minor argument here. The challenge mode mount is explicitly called in-game "phoenix". The thunderbirds don't just share the skeleton, but look almost exactly like those mounts, which makes them 99% certain to be a type of phoenix (probably a thunder-related one).
I know I may be drifting into simple semantics, but in this case this one word changes everything.

Re: Throne of Thunder beasts to check!
At any rate, this discussion should probably move to a different thread, since the (current) classification of the birds has already been established.

Re: Throne of Thunder beasts to check!
They seem to be quite clearly related to Pandaren phoenixes. Whether Pandaren phoenixes are related to elemental ones or just named so because of a similar look, I imagine is anyone's guess. If there's any lore regarding this I'd love to know.
It was an interesting discussion, but unless there's any hard evidence you might want to move the speculation to another thread at this point.
Cheers.

Wowhead lists two IDs for the Untrained Quilen:
- Untrained Quilen is shown as the grey one with a copper mane
- Untrained Quilen is shown as the red one

I only beast lore-d one. I didn't even notice there were more than one color. I don't think the quillen boss is in next weeks lfr, but the one after that.

Oh, I thought these quilen were in the same room as the quilen bosses. Are they somewhere else as well?Lampray wrote:I only beast lore-d one. I didn't even notice there were more than one color. I don't think the quillen boss is in next weeks lfr, but the one after that.

Nope, just in quilen boss room. Should have checked the boss's pets. I'm 99% sure you cant tame them, but they look so cool!
Re: Throne of Thunder beasts to check!
Ah sorry, I think I misunderstood. Your comment about LFR threw me. You're seeing these on 10 or 25 and not in LFR, aren't you?Lampray wrote:Nope, just in quilen boss room. Should have checked the boss's pets. I'm 99% sure you cant tame them, but they look so cool!
And yes, the armoured quilen are all beautiful. They would make nice rares

You know, given the druids in bear form in one of the allie Scenarios are still marked as beast, I don't think we'll see the worm fixed.
