WoW Down to 7.7 Million Subscribers

Seems the game is still loosing subscribers. Should be interesting to see the numbers on this.

Activision Blizzard's press release states that World of Warcraft is down to 7.7 million subscribers. This is a loss of 600,000 subscribers, down from 8.3 million last quarter. A call about the shares purchase will take place on July 26 at 8:30 AM ET, so check back then for any more comments on subscriber numbers.

Activision Blizzard and investors are purchasing 429 million shares for $5.8 billion, leaving Bobby Kotick as CEO of the company. This purchase is financed with $1.2 billion of cash that was on hand and $4.6 billion of debt proceeds, leaving them with a $1.4 billion of net debt at the end of the deal in September 2013.

The investment group includes Bobby Kotick and Brian Kelly, who put up $100 million together, as well as Tencent. This group will own 24.9% of the company and Vivendi will retain ownership of 83 million shares (12%) of the company.

WoW isn't going to killed by one specific competitor with a bang. It'll just slowly bleed out with a whimper.

In my view, it's simply that most of the people who are its potential audience have already tried it, and some of them have gotten tired of it. It's just the natural evolution of the thing.

It's kinda amazing that this many years into a game's life it can still draw 7.7 million paying subscribers. That's something to be celebrated, I think.

At a guess, I'd say you're looking at 3-4 million core subs, those that play every day like me and most of us here.

Well, I know I'm approaching another burnout of WoW. The only reason I haven't fully quit yet is because there isn't another game out there that has caught my interest enough, but I'm eagerly awaiting this Friday to see if the one I'm waiting for is worth while.

Pretty much. I watched an interesting vid about the "wow clones" and why they all failed to get the player base wow did. If i can find it again ill link it but he pretty much said wow took the best bits of everquest and threw in some other elements to make it appealing to alot of ppl. I think he said other mmo's failed cause they tried to either be too different (GW2 was given as an example) or the same but not as well done as wow. Interesting stuff

I wonder if the buyout will give them the independence to do more things they want, and in their own way. It'll be interesting to see if anything changes at a game level.

Nobody, certainly not Blizzard, expected WoW to still be kicking after all these years. At least not this strongly. It's like the Opportunity Mars Rover

wowcrendor made a vid about this. He hit the nail on the head. It's not a big deal. The hype for wow is just finally dying down and it's evening out. Most mmos never make it past 500,000 subs.

I have been toying with the idea of trying it again someday, but probably not for a while though. The only problems I have are that it doesn't have a free to play option (I like how some games have a F2P option and then a sub option with goodies), and I still can't help but feel disappointed in the new talent system.

It still has its good points, and I have many fond memories, I'm just not sure if I'll be able to get over some of the recent changes. I suppose for $15 I could try it out and see what I think, and in the end it's not all that much money. So I can't order pizza one night, big deal.

But like I said, that's a ways away. I'm playing Rift right now, and I still enjoy GW2 and even SWTOR. I just have MMO ADD and can't seem to play any one game for any length of time.
