way off topic.. but too happy

Unread post by Sukurachi »

Got a call this week, from an orchestra conductor. I thought it was about a piece I had written that I had sent to him. In a sense it was, in a sense it wasn't: it was BETTER!

He's commissioned a new concerto for bass oboe and orchestra from me!

Very exciting. It's not often that composers get guaranteed performances of their work.

well, I DID manage to smuggle a tiny reference to Star Trek into one of my works, as a hidden surprise for a friend.

Maybe I can manage to insert a "zug zug" somewhere in this one?

It's always a little bit delicate, of course, because of copyright issues.

Thanks Wain and Rhyela.

Luckily I have a couple months' (around 6 months) delay before starting work on this new piece. When I was first contacted about this commission, I had JUST started work on the final stage of a ballet I've been working on and would have hated to have to put it on the back burner. As it turns out, September has been a VERY productive time for me. I have more than 3/4 of the ballet finished (it existed as a piano score, I've been working on making the full orchestra version), and will probably have most of it done within the next few weeks (the advantage of being able to work on music 24/7).

An interesting this about this particular commission is the instrument for which it is being written: bass (or baritone, depending where you live) oboe.

it's a VERY rare instrument, and there are at present I believe less than half a dozen concertos for bass oboe and orchestra in existence. (for those who don't know, a "concerto" is a large-scale piece of music that pits a solo instrument - in this case the bass oboe - against an orchestra, in a sort of extended dialogue)

I admit I don't understand much about classical music, as far as the terminology, but I know that I love it! I listen to it almost every day on my way to and from work. I truly admire that you're composing a piece of music. To me that is just the coolest thing!!! If possible, could you post a link to it so I can listen to it when you're finished? :3

This is a short part of the ballet I'm working on right now (while waiting for confirmation of the other commission.. gotta wait for all the paperwork to go through).

This is part 4 (of 6 parts) of a ballet based on the Japanese myth of the Sun Goddess Amaterasu and her brother Susano-ô. In this particular part, Amaterasu has hidden in a deep cavern and the wise god Omori-kane has come to her to convince her to return to Heaven. There's a lot of pain and passion in this part.

Part 4: Omori-kane

Hope you enjoy it.

thanks guys!

I don't often get meaningful compliments about my music, so it's nice to hear.

you might be surprised to know that.. a lot of people don't understand my music. it's either not "modern" enough, or it's TOO "modern" for them.

It reminded me of Turandot for some reason! It also made me want to experience the full ballet as it felt like I was only getting half the "story", if that makes any sense.

Musical purists are, in my opinion, missing the central aspect of the music - the sharing of stories and emotions. Of course, I'm generally opinionated

hehe, thank-you Anyia. Turandot just so happens to be my favourite opera.

Of course, this was just one short section in a 20-minute long piece.

It's isn't quite "musical purists" who are the issue, but you are definitely right that there is a movement among the avant-garde who deny emotion or emotional involvement in new music. My goal when writing is always "I hope that the audience will feel something".

Wow Sukurachi that was really amazing. I could see it working very well in a film as well it's calming yet has a sense of anticipation about it. Your work reminds me a bit of Yoko Kanno which is really the highest complement an anime geek like me can give.
