Distracting shot and 30 yard growl

Unread post by Xota »

Hunter's Distracting Shot removed, possible to see it as a minor glyph? I'd be very sad to see the clutch plays go ;_;
Raised the range of Growl so that you can use it in that way, for the majority of cases. (Celestalon)
I must be doing something completely wrong, because in zero of the cases that I use distracting shot would a 30 yard pet growl be able to substitute. First, I don't have the glyph that directs Distracting Shot to my pet. It seems Celestalon presumes that it's used. Most of the time I use distracting shot is to pull a mob off my pet, so I can kite it and it doesn't gib my pet. Pretty much the only other time is when I'm in a group or raid and something needs to be pulled from a distance. Like if a boss (or other scary monster) needs to be pulled away from someone it's about to kill. In those cases, my pet is already up in its grill. So it'd saves them like 1 sec. Unless I micromanaged my pet across the room before I had it turn on growl and set to passive (so it doesn't blink strike back in), and in the time it takes to do that, the scary monster has already killed three more people.

Is everyone else using distracting shot in a way that a ranged growl on their pet could replace it? How should I be using it?

Growl was always a taunt to the pet for me, while I used Distracting shot to pull things off the pet and to me, or off the tank and kite it for however long I needed. Distracting shot *couldn't* be MDed to the pet, until the Glyph (and I never use that glyph; I have better things to use it for).

Growl at 30 yards isn't a *bad* plan, but it definitely won't replace Distracting Shot in *any* cases that I originally used it for.

Glad this got brought up, I find it confusing as well. I don't see how Growl, as it currently is, could possibly replace Distracting Shot. I only use Distracting Shot to pull mobs off my pet or to myself deliberately, and of course Growl is the exact opposite of that. Also using Growl right now will put a pet into combat, whereas Distracting Shot can be used without a pet or with the pet passive by your side (which matters when you have those few certain mechanics that one shot pets).

Also let's face it, Growl has been broken and buggy for a long time now. I fear that there will be even more problems with them trying to add this "new feature" when they haven't managed to fix the current version of Growl.

Growl CAN'T taunt Bosses, well at least current content ones. And when they made that change, it broke it for a lot of old raids, mostly WotLK and Cata ones too, and I think some in TBC but that I'm not sure. So as long as Growl can't taunt Bosses this change to give it 30 yards to replace Distracting Shot is pretty much worthless.

I think 30 yards is too much and could cause problems while soloing, aggroing additional mobs and reducing the pet's survivability. To be honest, I very rarely have used Distracting Shot.

Right now, as BM, I sometimes forget to turn growl back on after a raid and many times my pet still keeps aggro while soloing without it. I'm sure that wouldn't be the case for SV or MM.

I also use to get things off my pet - for grinding Warbringers, I often distracting shot a vengeful spirit off my pet if he is taking too much damage. Granted I don't use it all the time, but I do use it!

I'm baffled as well. Even though I don't use Distracting Shot too often, it certainly has its uses and when it does it can be extremely handy. I think it's important to be able to have a taunt and get instant aggro on your hunter (your character, not the pet) in a lot of situations. Growl is not the same thing at all.

Warbringers is what I use it for most of the time too. In Cataclysm, I used it for ping ponging the wasp miniboss in ZG.
