I don't hunt, but I work/live on a farm about half the time. There are a lot of hunters around, and most of them are pretty courteous and what not. There is the occasional yahoo who will hunt from their truck or drive onto your land without permission. The other hunters don't like them.

If there weren't hunters, we would be overrun with deer. The ecosystem is no longer the same as the one that animals are best adapted to, so in order to manage those ecosystems, humans have to do things like hunt. Even hunt for sport. We have a whole lot of laws in order to regulate sport hunting, which is how we use it to manage the ecosystem. Directly and indirectly, hunters are pretty big supporters of conservation.

I don't eat meat (other than fish) because of personal ethics. When there's varmints, I prefer letting cats take care of them, or relocating them (if they're too big for cats). Of course there's other people on the farm that will shoot them, so I haven't found out how effective relocation has been. Most people who kill raccoons aren't making hats and or stew.

@Slickrock: Some states allow you to hunt feral hogs with no permit.

On topic: a Lonli Guju type tribute would be fitting.

There's a difference between poaching and hunting though.

The biggest Poacher in wow I can think of it Hemet Nesingwary.. I've done all his quests before without really thinking about it, but while doing them a second time I realized he was no /hunter/. The guy just goes around and has beautiful/strong animals killed just because they're alive. Like Shango was a beautiful beast, so lets kill him. That dragon has a big family and is very powerful, so lets kidnap the babies and then kill her. This Rhino is revered with the lands and respected for his strength, lets kill 'em. No wonder the druids and nature-based classes hate this guy. ;)

He really /is/ terrible. He and his crew don't just 'sport hunt', they basically try to eradicate life in an entire area. Not intentionally, but having players and himself + his crew go around and kill a stupidly large number of animals is basically that. Honestly, there were a few times where I wished I could shoot him and his crew instead. I'm okay with hunting, but this guy isn't doing that. He's just a killer. Explains why his titles are:

"Enemy of Nature, The Great Game Hunter, The Butcher of Badlands, The Stranglethorn Ripper, Old Man Death, Hemet, Nessie, Ol' Dirty, Ol' Dirty D, Father of the Bounty, The Extinctionator, The Target of D.E.H.T.A. "

I would agree with this... except for one big difference.

Humans hunt the strong, the fast, the big, the powerful, et cetera.
Animals hunt the sick, the weak, the young, the old, et cetera.

So in essence, while I don't *hate* hunting (I don't *do* it but I definitely am pro-hunters), I *do* argue that human hunting is helping the ecosystem. It's just weeding out the strong and healthy, and instead leaving the others in place. It's basically weeding the 'good side' out of the gene pool and leaving behind the dregs. Which in the end will start weakening that aforementioned gene pool.

EDIT: Because I keep forgetting how to do quotes.
