A PvP Pet

Unread post by Acherontia »

Hai guise.

I won a pair of Wrathful legs in VoA today. Now, I know PvP, but I generally don't PvP on my hunter. I've been interested for awhile though, so I figured hey, I have spare triumphs and honor. I grabbed a couple offset pieces and the gloves too, and set myself up a homemade BM PvP spec as my offspec (I'm BM at heart yo).

Long story short, I decided that, as I already have a Chimaera for kiting and -love- him, I'd like a good 2nd pet for PvP as well which does heavy damage and/or is good vs casters. The categories I was looking at:

* Something with a Stun, as I've already got a snare & would prefer something that -also- works vs casters
* Something with a bleed, vs rogues
* Ferocity, because during testing I realized Cunning does far too low damage for me

First I tried Bat, and to my horror found that the stun special costs 80 FOCUS, meaning that the Bat literally never has the focus to cast it. I had made a macro to cast Intimidation, or Sonic Blast on modifier keypress, but once I figured out the 80 focus thing, ditched the bat.

2nd logical choice was Ravager, then. But I don't like them. I tried, but I don't. THEY HAVE NO FACE :( That, and I realized the following: I like sending pet and kiting while the pet destroys the enemy. I've sent my PvE Devilsaur in and had it solo badly-geared casters in a matter of seconds. I like that.

I also realized, though, that some PvP utility would be nice. I played with Hyenas, and I like their damage. I played with a Raptor, and while I like theirs too, the model isn't as nice as I remember; it looks awkward and squashed in places, and too broad in others (and I dislike the OL model).

I would just use a cat, but I wholly dislike all the model + skin combos out there, bar maybe the Frostsaber. I also dislike the STOMPINESS of Corehounds. So I narrowed it down to:

Hyenas and Tallstriders, for now. I did some testing with random ones of each I tamed in the Barrens at random, vs a very well-geared ret guildmate of mine. At level 75, they hurt, and I mean HURT, this guy. Yeah, he could probably global them, but he was busy trying to catch up with me.

I decided on Tallstrider for now, because on the Ret at least, it's buggy and in a good way: the Dust Cloud makes him miss Judgements without using up the charge. So he'll try and Judge, and it will fail, and then his next melee swing misses as well. It doesn't work vs casters, which I'm iffy on, but there's no Ferocity pets with a stun (for casters) so this will have to do. I'm also hoping that a Tallstrider will appear so useless and cute that players won't attempt to destroy it off the bat, as with Valak my Devilsaur.

So without further ado, my newest PvP pet and addition to my ever-changing stables:

On to my questions: Does anyone else prefer a different Ferocity pet for PvP? Why? Does anyone else use Tallstriders, and have they found any specific pros/cons to using them?

It's always nice to see someone use a Tallstrider. :D Don't see the pretty purple skin all that often on my server now that I think about it... hm...

Anyway. I haven't used my Hunter in PvP yet, but I know what I hate running into.

Devilsaurs.

I have no idea what it is about them, but the thought process of most players seems to be "OH GOD DEVILSAUR! QUICK KILL THE HUNTER WHILE THE DEVILSAUR HAS FREE REIGN OVER THE SQUISHIES!" I saw a Devilsaur killing three people before the rest of the moron squad found the Hunter (who was smart and hid a good distance away) and killed the Hunter. Cats? Wolves? Apes? Ravagers? Insta-Dead. Devilsaurs? OMGPANIC! /headdesk

Ooh I know, I love sending Valak into groups where he can kill clothies. I just figured something useful for 1v1, world PvP etc would be nice to have too :D

1v1 and world PvP is where Spiders and Silithid's shine. You could also go for a Ravager, tough you said you didn't like them that much. Another nice 1v1 pet is a crab.

I also exist on DeviantArt.

Yeah, for kiting etc I already have a Chimaera, so if I'm stuck vs something very clingy I'll pull him out--I really swear by him for kiting. But for general usefulness, I really wish there was a Ferocity pet with a stun :(

I've use my tallstrider LuLu for a lot. 1v1, PvP, raids ........... she never fails. At level 80 she's also a heavy hitter. Granted she's not wolf or devilsaur heavy hitter but she does really good. I have her dps specked to. In MM she does great also. Her dust cloud helps.

Edit: I also agree with Feath3r about devilsaur. I was ganked in pvp recently by about three other hordies when they found me because Dred was out just straight killing. His monstrous bite and ferocity is wicked.

My personal favorite for pvp as MM (esp vs casters) is the serpent cobra

Image

spits poison from really far off so if someone is running away it will still hit them and eat away. Slows casting speed 25%, 20 focus, 10 sec cd PLUS lots of biting.

I've seen alot of devilsaurs in BGs.. always dead bodies. They're big and get targeted, die really fast.

On a side note... does anyone remember the quest in zul drak when you tamed a big fat zombie abomination? so much more useful attacks than any of the animals they give us hunters. It could taunt, take a huge beating, blow things over with farts, then explode instantly killing 20 enemies at once. It immediately became the cutest thing I'd ever tamed in the game because of how strong it was. I really wish they would give us pvp pets this amazing /sigh

I PVPed with Mazzeranache on my hunter for a while, and sadly, he died faster than any other pet x_X Nobody liked my flamingo! Maybe it was the screamy noises he made... to be honest the only pets I've ever noticed that make a huge difference in PVP are Chimeras (the slow is very noticeable/useful, even on casters), Snakes (as marks they let you get more chimeras off by 'covering' your stings, so not really relevent to BM I guess), Devilsaurs (people attack them because they get in the way XD) and any ranged attacking pet (finishing off those who try to flee is funny >:P). I ended up deciding to just go with my favorite pet for the moment when I PVPed after all that testing, haha. I think any pet you try will have moments of "Wow that was awesome" and then a lot of time when it doesn't particularly stand out above any other pet. ^^;

My old snake Dranosh is what I used to use against casters. The slow combined with aimed shot is a powerful combo for a healer/healing class to deal with. also their attack is a ranged dot which means then can be useful against stealth classes when set to agressive (especially the ones that try to stealth at the last min and get poisoned then get taken out of stealth kek)

I recently swapped over to my hyena Bigandre since I seem to have more trouble fighting melee than casters nowadays (cept Spreists >:O ) The ability itself puts out a good amount of damage and 40 seconds isn't that long of a cooldown while in mm, and its a whopping 14 seconds in bm so i can combine it with concussive shot and keep someone slowed for 90% of the time if I time it right.

I briefly used a tallstrider ad my pvp pet. The dps output is a little low, but the defensive utility you get makes up for it (good if you have low resilience) Also getting rofflestomped by a chcken is just too hilarious :D

(kinda wish I had more stable slots so I could have all 3)

Lil, What does beast lore say about its armor rating?
...
ITS OVER 9000!!!!
