So I finally did Rexxar's quest to add him to the <Unseen Path> (lazy I know) and I assigned him as a bodyguard. To my surprise he called a pet to him during fights. Not sure why this surprised me but it did.
What I was jealous of is what he was calling to him.
Obviously Misha his bear came out and Nisha his dread raven.
But it was his grand wyvern Leokk I was truly jealous of. So so gorgeous was that beast.
And it got me thinking. *pouts like a child* IT'S NOT FAIR. Have I not paid my dues as a hunter since 2004 and learned enough to work with a beast such as a dread raven or a grand wyern?
We have no issues calling dread ravens, skyscreamers, unicorns... Yet we can't tame them and keep them permanently? Doesn't make much sense really. Always wondered why Blizzard would add certain beasts to dire beast when they were untameable.

I think all those should be tameable, but dire beast (calling random wild animals to temporarily aid you) requires less of a bond than taming does. You might help another player out as you pass them, but that doesn't mean you'd join their guild. I guess pterodactyls just find us somewhat tolerable, so we need more animal magnetism.
