In my opinion, this is why Zekhan, or Zappy boy, will not die in the Battle for Lordaeron or Battle for Azeroth (at least not so soon).
1- He is on the official BFA poster.
2- There's a voice actor assigned to him, Valence Thomas (also pictured).
3 - He became an icon for the Horde and awakened the will to fight for the faction (and to create Troll Shamans) in many disappointed (or not) players.
4 - Will go to Zandalar to fight beside his people.
5 - Represents Vol'Jin.
6- The Horde is no longer the “Orc Horde” it once was, it is known and should be acknowledged. Meaning, Zekhan is the Horde’s new generation.
7- Is gorgeous

If he is going to have any involvement in the plot, it won't be in 8.0 seeing as he isn't in the game at all. But I do agree with those posts and could see him showing up in 8.1+
