Vephriel wrote: Also, was The Vampire Lestat the first and only book of the Chronicles that you read? I highly suggest reading them in order, otherwise it's just not the same. Interview With The Vampire is the first in the series and The Vampire Lestat would have been much better had you read that first. :) Just my opinion though, which is admittedly biased as they're some of my favourite novels. ^^
I've never read anything by Ann Rice before. I would have honestly preferred to start with the first book, but I didn't have much of a choice--the English class called for Lestat and my grade depends on it, haha.

I'd like to go back and try reading the full series at some point, but I'm a bit leery of it at the same time. Some parts of Lestat were fantastic and I couldn't put the book down, while other parts just seemed to drag on far longer than they should have had to. It's one of few books I've ever read that kept me on the fence throughout the entire thing as far as how I felt about it; usually by the halfway point I can decide if I like or dislike a book. Not so with this one.

Mm, in that case I would strongly recommend trying to read Interview with the Vampire. That's the book that hooked me in and the characterization in books afterwards really stems from that initial novel. It's been a while since I read them, but I can definitely tell it would be a bit...odd to just jump into Lestat without any previous knowledge about the characters and such. It's a shame you couldn't have read Interview first, but perhaps if you get around to it you may enjoy the full Chronicles more. Another thing to keep in mind is that when Anne Rice first wrote that series, it was all very new. She revolutionized the whole image of a vampire, but unfortunately the whole vampire thing has been done to death these days (no pun intended), and so that could definitely weaken the appeal.

Or, if not, then it just wasn't for you. ^^ No harm done. :D

Yeah...that's why I really, really wish I could have read the Vampire Chronicles before the trendy age of vampires. I know logically speaking that it was written in the 80's, before the current vampire-trends began. I've read quite a few 'classical' vampire novels (like Dracula), but Rice would be contemporary vampire fiction, which I really would have found attractive.

Unfortunately, my mind was tainted by Twilight first. GRRR. Now I'm very leery whenever anybody suggests a new vampire show/novel/whatever, just because...it's not the same anymore. :(

Vampires used to be one of my favorite mythological 'races' or 'monsters,' until they became the new thing, and now it's just impossible to say I like vampires without people going LOL TWILIGHT and LOL EDWARD at me. >_< It's like nobody knows anything else these days.

I know exactly what you mean. It depresses me as well that the whole genre has become so corrupted now.....anyone's willing to spew out some sort of vampire novel or TV show if they think it'll earn them a few bucks. I can't wait for all the hype to die down and leave me in peace with my old books.

I really enjoyed when Vampires had more of a romanticized, gothic image. The aristocratic fallen angels that came from Anne Rice will always be one of my most sincere loves in terms of characterization and novels. Thankfully I'm pretty good with keeping what I like close to me and ignoring outside interference. I'll continue to enjoy my favourite things even if they are being vandalized or overshadowed, but I mourn the fact that those older books and such will forever be tainted to people who are unfortunate enough to learn of Twilight first.

Anne Rice started out great, but she started losing steam around Queen of the Damned. After that she just started going down hill. And don't even talk to me about that atrocity posing as a movie, Queen of the Damned. *Shudders*

I actually prefer the Interview with Vampire look on Lestat, before she started trying to make him look like a good guy. Or at least not so bad. Then she kind of ret-conned out the fact that Lestat was your typical vampire as far as his feeding habits went, and tried to make it to where all he'd ever done was feed off of whores, beggars, and thieves. The dregs of society, I believe he called them.

Twilight pains me in way's I never thought possible. Ever. As an up and coming author it pains me to see writing that mediocre being taken as the greatest thing since sliced bread. Not only that, but I don't think it really conveys a healthy view of relationships to it's target audience. I mean Bella spends how much time taking Edwards crap, and then HOW much time being a tramp between Edward and Jacob?

The whole thing is just a painful mockery of both romance and of several mythological creatures.

Haha!

Supposedly the Twilight series is done. Supposedly. I do not believe it however, as Meyer appears to enjoy the attention a liiiiiittle too much.

/sigh

Thus why I posted a comic originally about the LOST finale. Man that thing sucked.

This honestly has nothing to do with Twilight, but rather the term 'necro'. Totally didn't understand why that word, I then I thought, "Ooooh! Necromancers! They bring people back to life, and necroing is bringing threads back to life!"

And then I realized that likely isn't the reason, but it makes sense at least....

AFAIK, the term 'necroposting' began in the early days of forums, back when people thought 4chan was a good idea...

So I should not have said that? The thread was on the back pages so I thought it appropriate when posting and thus bringing this thread back up.

I was just explaining to Azu.

Necroposting is only rude if you go into a yearold thread whose owner most likely quit on the subject long ago. This community is small enough, so that doesn't matter.
