Hunter Pet Tier List For a Friend

Unread post by WerebearGuy »

Foreword: I am NOT basing this list on my own personal opinion, nor on how cool or ugly a pet model is. I am looking at how often the pets' abilities and traits will come in handy in the widest variety of content. I made this for a friend as a cheat sheet for when he needed a new pet and checked Petopia, though I figured I'd share this to see if others had insight that could help further refine the list.

For the most part, I ranked them as such:
  • S Tier has the strongest combinations of abilities, and are overall better than their peers as a result.
  • A Tier houses pets with Mortal Wounds, powerful defensive skills, and unique combinations that make them better than their peers on lower tiers.
  • B Tier houses pets that mostly use Slow skills, which are not as useful due to Hunters already having a wide range of crowd control abilities. That's not to say they're useless, of course.
  • C Tier houses self-dispelling pets. This is significantly less of an issue as pets tend not to be the target of detrimental abilities outside of PvP, and even then, the hunter is the primary target most of the time.
  • D Tier houses pets that have on-use dodge skills. Pets that dodge gamble their lives, and CAN get lucky to where they just avoid all damage, but the RNG makes it highly unreliable.
  • F Tier solely houses crabs due to the extreme detriment their ability brings to the player.

Otherwise, here are my justifications for specific pet families that may not be obvious:
  • Clefthoof and Spirit Beast are S Tier for very obvious reasons. These are by far the most useful pets due to the high value they bring for solo content, and Spirit Beasts are always a valuable choice in raiding and mythic+ content.
  • Carapid is S Tier because it takes less physical damage than other pets while also having a good defensive skill. They're surprisingly good tanks as a result.
  • Raptor is S Tier because of the undead options. Undead Raptors are very popular PvP pets due to them being considered Undead rather than Beast in regards to player skills, and Mortal Wounds is a very strong effect in PvP.
  • If not using an Undead Raptor, then Raptor would still be an A Tier pet due to the Mortal Wounds effect.
  • Bear and Rodent are S Tier because Rest is a very strong self-heal that can be used after leaving combat. Bears have a defensive skill while Rodents apply Mortal Wounds, both of which are incredibly useful.
  • Aqiri is A Tier because its bonus run speed is incredibly useful when chasing down fleeing opponents that other pets would not be able to keep up with.
  • Blood Beast and Worm are A Tier because ranged abilities are rare on pets, and a ranged slow is incredibly helpful when you can't reach the target. These are just as good as Aqiri.
  • Chimaera is A Tier because its channeled frost is both the only ranged hunter pet attack and a way to give hunters frost damage when it's needed.
  • Core Hound is A Tier because it provides a unique damage reflect.
  • Devilsaur is A Tier only because its heal has a requirement. If it could heal from any corpse, it would be S Tier as the heal is just as good as Rest is.
  • Feathermane, Pterrordax, and Water Strider are A Tier because they bring a very useful on-use ability, being either slowfall or water walking. These are incredibly useful in a wide range of content.
  • Lesser Dragonkin is B Tier only because its magic damage reduction is incredibly high. Magic AoE effects are almost entirely negligible, and directed spells can be soaked with a well-timed Growl where possible.
  • Cat is C tier because Prowl can be situationally useful, but like other dodge pets, it would be D tier if Prowl is not used effectively.
  • All pets with a Dodge ability are in D Tier because of the high risk and low reward that Dodge brings. This is highly unreliable, and these pets should probably be avoided outside of animal companions.
  • Crab is the sole F Tier pet purely because it requires the crab to remain stationary for six seconds. Crabs become dead weight for the duration as a result, which is very much an undesirable trait.
Again, I tried to remain as unbiased as possible when making this, and the focus is all-around rather than specifically PvE or PvP. If something feels off or wrong, or you would like to explain why a pet should be in another tier, do let me know. I wanted to make sure this was a useful cheat sheet my friend (and anyone else who finds it useful) could refer to from time to time when he just wants a quick new pet without having to read up on why things are good or bad in detail. To be completely honest, I didn't realize there were so many good options now that we can freely swap pet specializations. I feel bad for crabs though.

I’ll rank pet abilities here based on what they bring to the table, not including exotic or bonus abilities, I’m ranking them from A to D or F

A tier - Triggered defense - solo content - bears, gorillas, gruffhorns, camels, oxen, clefthooves(exotic), pterrordaxes(exotic), stone hounds(exotic), these pets have the most damage reduction when they trigger their ability, it’s cool, the version stone hounds use is slightly less damage reduction but with a 3% heal so they are probably the second best to clefthooves

A tier - mortal wounds - PvP and dungeons - raptors, rodents, carrion birds, hyenas, hydras, lizards, devilsaurs, ravagers, scorpids, wasps. they are super useful when going into dungeons or PvP. Undead raptors and undead devilsaurs make great PvP pets due to being immune to crowd control for beasts. Many mobs in dungeons heal so it’s a safe bet to bring one.

B tier - Defense - solo content - scalehides, boars, mechanicals, beetles, turtles, carapids(exotic), shale beasts(exotic), core hounds(exotic). This is a pretty good alternative to triggered defense, the damage reduction is slightly less, but it has a shorter cooldown, meaning it could be used more often, when I use it it triggers when health gets lower just like triggered defense.

C tier - slow - PvP or crowd control - wolves, hounds, crocolisks, basilisks, birds of prey, aqiri(exotic), chimaera(exotic), blood beasts, crabs, tallstriders, spiders, mammoths. This ability is hit or miss hence why it’s C tier, it could be used in PvP and it’s good for all hunter specs, to either keep your target at bay or catch up to your target, Chimaeras and blood beasts are the best slow pets because they have range, blood beasts have a amazing 10 yd range, and chimaeras have an insane 30 yd range, crabs are on a tough spot since their slow channels 99% of the time.

C tier - dodge - cats, coursers, foxes, monkeys, serpents, wind serpents, hoppers, dragonhawks, feathermanes - solo or open world content, Dodge pets are a very hit and miss, and they have the best looking pets so I have to spare them from D and F tier. Their dodge only comes by chance so it’s hard to count on them, unless sometimes you get lucky, but that’s an extremely low chance

D tier - Magic Defense - Lesser Dragonkin, despite being the coolest pets added in years, the ability doesn’t do them much. I don’t think anybody knows a situation where this ability is needed, the reduction is really high, but the cooldown is insanely long, can’t help but feel sorry for them since everyone loves their cloud serpents

F tier - Self dispel - Stags, Rays, sporebats, water striders(exotic), waterfowl, bats, moths, spirit beasts(exotic), They were situational in BFA when they were able to tranquilize targets, but when tranquillizing shot returned in shadowlands, they’ve been hit with the iron fist by only giving them a self dispel. They are unfortunately super useless in any situation, can’t help but feel sorry for all those pets

You may go crazy for me putting great families like Aqiris and spirit beasts in rough spots, but I only ranked normal abilities, not exotic ones, of course the exotic abilities save spirit beasts and aqiris from being bad, can’t wait to rank pets soon enough based on looks
