They were Ostrich on steroids.
The moa[3][4] were eleven species (in six genera)[5] of flightless birds endemic to New Zealand. The two largest species, Dinornis robustus and Dinornis novaezelandiae, reached about 3.7 m (12 ft) in height with neck outstretched, and weighed about 230 kg (510 lb).[6]

Moa are members of the order Struthioniformes (or ratites) although some sources also recognise these as the separate order Dinornithiformes [7]. The eleven [8] species of moa are the only wingless birds, lacking even the vestigial wings which all other ratites have. They were the dominant herbivores in New Zealand forest, shrubland and subalpine ecosystems for thousands of years, and until the arrival of the Māori were hunted only by the Haast's Eagle. All species are generally believed to have become extinct by 1500 AD, mainly due to hunting by Māori.
Anyways yeah why are people, ESPECIALLY ANIMAL CONTROL confusing DOGS or COYOTES with mange, as 'chupacabra'. Tho honestly they probably did put the poor thing out of its misery and in the end this was for the best.

During this period twelve well staffed and equipped professional expeditions failed to collect a single live specimen of this large bear. It took over twenty years to collect a living specimen of the Congo Peacock once it became known to Westerners from feathers and oral descriptions by natives of the Congo River basin.

Elaboration is pointless, though. You can't enlighten someone who shuts their mind off from the possibilities.
That's not what I said. If you show me a live specimen, or some other overwhelming evidence, I'll believe you. But a low quality video of a brown blur isn't evidence. Same for the supernatural stuff, there hasn't been a single case where it has been CONFIRMED, just people that clam they can read minds.

Very interesting...
I'd say dog or at least some canine too. Although not very healthy looking or the pet of some crazy barber next door...

Didn't the one guy say, it wasn't bothered by him and acted like a neighbors dog would? Sounds like rabies to me.

And the site Mania linked had something strange on the bottom:
Under the title "You might also like" was al link called "Over 17.000 species close to extinction".

Now if that didn't come out wrong, what did?

It does appear it is a dog/coyote with mange HOWEVER never doubt that something that seems a myth is real, there are species hidden we havent even discovered yet so its possible this may be a real thing. No one can know for sure an animal drinking blood isnt so far fetched bats do it. My point is THIS is clearly not a chupacabra but never think that anything is completely made up until you have proof - you may have proof something isnt it but you cant prove it dosent exist somewhere ;)

Yep, and i so love it when some scientists freak out over an animals body that seems to be a new found specimen while all the natives wonder about the ruckus as they had that beast on their menu for generations and it's widely known to be delicious!

Kind of reminds me of that paragraph in one of the discworld novels, where Terry explains how explorers name new found mountains, rivers etc:
The show it to a native and ask what it's called. Since there is always some gap in language knowledge, there are now a lot of landmarks that are called "Get your hands off me, you idiot" or "yeah, a mountain, so what?"

I see where you're coming from, Saturo.

I mean, there are people who believe in a deity throughout their entire lives. They've never seen, heard, or touched it, but they'll base their lives around it. Imo, believing in cryptids is pretty tame. xP

Aye, I happen to be an atheist as well. It's just, if there isn't any solid proof, then it's unlikely to exist.

Hehe, I'm an atheist too but I've always found myself very intrigued by things like cryptids and the supernatural. I can't say I believe in all of them necessarily, but I definitely think some do exist. The old house that I grew up in as a child was haunted, so I've had some first hand experience with ghosts or whatever you want to call them as well.

Mind explaining HOW you knew it was haunted? For example, my bedroom windiow opens on it's own. That's because the lock doesn't work, and the wind can be pretty intense.

I'm not trying to convince anyone of anything, just that my experiences were my own and I have personal beliefs. Even if I listed some of the phenomena I doubt it would change your mind.

Spirits are another thing that fascinate and frighten me. I can watch movies about guys with chainsaws, or about Schizophrenics that kill people and they don't even know it, or even movies about monsters and I'm fine.. But make me watch a documentary about spirits and paranormal stuff, I might lose sleep. xP

Well, I'll put down some of the stuff that used to happen in that house.

The spare bedroom on the second floor had a large table and a chair in one corner. Every morning we would find this chair pushed back away from the table. Not just a little, but a full 3-5 feet away. We would slide the chair back under in the day, but it was the same thing each morning.

One of the things that I hated the most when I was young was a scream that would wake me up in the middle of the night. It was a harsh, terrifying sound that would be right in my ear. Afterwards I would feel a strong grip on my leg, as if someone closing their hand around it. It was so tight that it would hurt sometimes. As soon as I turned on the lamp the grip would disappear.

The most frightening place was definitely the basement. I flat out refused to go down there, especially not by myself. It was a scary basement regardless. Sort of small, plain concrete for both the walls and floor. The hot water tank was right near the bottom of the stairs and would make the creepiest noises. But it wasn't any of that. Right under the stairs, in that little cranny, was...something. It wasn't a physical thing, I find it so hard to describe, but it was just a feeling of terror. You'd get to the bottom of the stairs, and if you looked around to that dark gap you'd just be filled with fear. Anyone who came to our house would have the same thing, we didn't even have to tell them about it. If you went down to the basement and looked at that spot you'd just know something was there, and it was the scariest sensation I've ever felt.

Besides those we had regular cases of mysterious footsteps upstairs when no one was up there, random knocking on any of the doors, the water faucets turning themselves on by themselves. Just annoyances more than anything. I was fascinated but I was pretty scared (I was very young when we lived here).

Wow. Frightening and strange, but fascinating. How long did your family live there? And was there any sort of known history with the house?

It would have been interesting if you tried to set up a video camera during the night and left it running, focused on the chair, just to see if it would catch anything.
