Dropping pets that you know will be there to get retiring...
Looking for opinions and/or a discussion about dropping pets that are sticking around just to get pets that are going the way of the dodo in Cataclysm...
As of right now on live servers, I only have two hunters. A Draenai (Misfortune) and an Orc (Tapeworm). Come Cataclysm I will more than likely make a Goblin and a Worgen hunter too.
Misfortune has the Clutchmother and the brown/white Silithid from Thousand Needles, so she isn't really in a bind for now.
Tapeworm, on the other hand, is full on pets... He has Arcturis, Aotona, Loque'nahak, Clutchmother, and Skoll. He had Gondria, but I dropped him/her in order to get the Clutchmother.
My problem now is trying to get Tapeworm the brown/white Silithid... and he doesn't raid so I don't think it will be possible for him to ever get one from AQ40.
Here is the breakdown on each of my tames from each pet above...
Arcturis - I sat looking at the spawn point for 3 days. Each day was about 17 hours of continously looking at the spawn point. I never saw it spawn, so no one was quicker than me or anything like that. On the 4th day I woke up at 5am and logged in... not really expecting anything (no one ever expects the Spanish Inquisition!) and BOOM there he was. Easy tame after waiting so long.
Aotona - I actually spent 6-7 weeks of constantly flying around the Basin looking for him. I only spent about 5-6 hours a day doing this, but I finally tagged him and almost died during the taming... but I got him. ...and during the hunt I mined 3300+ ores.
Skoll - I dedicated myself to one spawn point for about a week off and on. One day I logged in to see if he was there and he wasn't, so I decided to just fly around looking for him and getting some ore while I was at it... He was hiding in the trees by dwarf cave.
Loque'nahak - First time in the Basin and I was actually looking for Aotona. From Nesingway's camp I flew west (I think it was west...) up towards the Frenzyheart camp. I saw a white cat and after a double take Loque was just sitting there. Tamed him within 5-10min of me getting to the Basin. I actually saw him about every other night while I looked for Aotona, and since I already had him I made sure to tell the other hunters in the area where he was.
Clutchmother - Very easy. I walked right up to her area and there she was...
Gondria - Even though I no longer have him/her... I logged off in ZD and on my second day of just logging on and doing a circle around the spawn points I got him/her. I have dropped Gondria TWICE in order to get a new pet and I always seem to be able to get him/her back pretty quickly (<<knock on wood>>).
I am thinking about ditching Loque in order to get the silithid, and then getting Loque, Gondria, and my ghost worm back after Cataclysm hits.
What are your opinions on it?
Also, I noticed in the forum sticky that the Diseased Bear is still tameable in WPL (in closed beta), but when I went to WPL about 8-10 days ago... every Diseased Bear I saw was untameable... did Blizzard update some mobs?

There are tameable low level diseased black bears- I remember some were supposedly punted to Silverpine if I remember the location right. Also, I noticed in the forum sticky that the Diseased Bear is still tameable in WPL (in closed beta), but when I went to WPL about 8-10 days ago... every Diseased Bear I saw was untameable... did Blizzard update some mobs?
Still early beta and the only Pets/Skins atm MIA are, the Silithid, the Blue Scorpids, Clutchmother and Azzere. But with all the new skins, new tameable mobs, etc etc etc coming about I really doubt any skin is going to be 'retired' or 'made extinct'.Looking for opinions and/or a discussion about dropping pets that are sticking around just to get pets that are going the way of the dodo in Cataclysm...

come Cata, 1000 needles is going to be completely flooded, which is where the one rare spawn silithid is. The only other place to get that skin is in AQ...but you need to be in a raid and beat the first boss before you can get at the silithid

Re: Dropping pets that you know will be there to get retirin
Definitely worth dropping a non rare/sentimental pet for the Silithid before Cataclysm comes out. Unless you have a very agreeable guild or friends that want to take time out of exploring the "new" Azeroth, your chances of getting into AQ anytime after launch are close to nil.Makoes wrote:Dizzy wrote:http://www.wow-petopia.com/html/mobs/mo ... vager.html do you mean this silithid?

After Cata comes out, the Northrend rares will have a greater chance of survival. I wouldn't reccomend dropping the basin ones since their spawn patterns are so complicated, but Skoll I consider the most expendable spirit beast, jsut because once Northrend gets treated like Outland as a level-thru area, few if any will bother visiting Storm Peaks.

Aye, I've seen and tamed Skoll a number of times but I've yet to see Loque after I tamed him or any other basin spawns.Undra wrote:After Cata comes out, the Northrend rares will have a greater chance of survival. Arc I don't even want to think about, his damn spawn point caused me so much pain...

@Harpier Arc's on a 19-22hr spawn time... so wait for server maintenance, & wait till about 18hrs after server's up 5am pst, 8am est, & just park at his spawn point, grab a pillow.... & turn those head-set speakers all the way up, oh & be sure to jump a lot so you don't afk.dc hehe I helped a guildie get him just by letting him know about the time frame to log on, he did, was after maintenance, & he too, got his Arcturis.
Regarding Loque? Well Rhyela & I spent sheesh 8hrs? in Sholazar looking for her lost friend with absolutely no luck at all...thankfully ticket brought him back but still, we were there a LONG freakin time with no Loque, & I was fairly sure he'd spawn at 4-6hr mark.
Wish ya luck though ^^

On topic, ya I dropped Sciuto for now, to pick up Silithid Ravager; Krieger.

I disagree, and my reason for this is simple. Time Lost Proto-Drake. Her/His flight path covers much of Skolls spawns, and if I was a random player and saw a blue shiny rare walking around, not knowing who he was, I'd kill him instantly. I'd give up Gondria or Arct if any of them. Arct has ONE spawn point, and will likely be like Humar today. I can pretty much walk to Humars tree any time of day and find Mr. big black and fluffy.Undra wrote:After Cata comes out, the Northrend rares will have a greater chance of survival. I do believe that having Pitch, who shares his skin and has an almost instantaneous re-spawn time, and the lack overall of low level hunters is the greatest reason for that.Gimlion wrote:Undra wrote: I can pretty much walk to Humars tree any time of day and find Mr. big black and fluffy.
Re: Dropping pets that you know will be there to get retirin
After much consideration I went and dropped Loque to get the silithid.
I am thinking that Blizzard isn't going to give him back to me with a "ticket" though.
My decision was based on how long it actually took me to get whichever pet, and since I got Loque almost instantly AND I have seen him A LOT in the basin I went ahead and dropped him.
I am sure he'll turn into my "Oh man... why did I do that?!" hunt in the future, but I have already been through hunts like that many, many times before.
I just hope someone doesn't find another pet that we think might go away. Yes, I know about the blue scorpions, but I am hoping that since there were many of those they would be moved somewhere and not just disappear... I have yet to see them in the beta though...

Blizzard does not restore lost or mistakenly abandoned pets. Good luck on your Loque hunt after Cata

Re: Dropping pets that you know will be there to get retirin
Actually they do, depending on the GM. I let go of my Beast once and regretted it days later when I tried to retame him and just could not get it to work. I opened a ticket saying how much I missed him and sure enough they restored him for me even though I purposely abandoned him. A few others here have had their pets restored as well.Undra wrote:Blizzard does not restore lost or mistakenly abandoned pets. Good luck on your Loque hunt after Cata

Re: Dropping pets that you know will be there to get retirin
Truthfully my experience with the practice is ancient. i had tamed Broken Tooth and then fell through the world. He ended up going from content to unhappy to gone, leaving me while i fell through forever.
Opened a ticket, explained that I lost my pet due to a glitch, that i had been hunting for him for over a week. In the custom of the day, the GM's carefully cut & paste response was that it was against policy, was a unfortunate bit of bad luck, but they c(w)ouldn't give him back or even force a spawn.
Eventually i was able to put it behind me when I gave up on BT and got my own epic Zul'Gurub bat. But the incident still haunts me as I play with my rare and extinct stable.
I can see how the more friendly and human face the GM's display these days might make it a more case by case situation. Still, it's not something i'd ever count on happening.

I dropped my ghost saber for the scorpid, and upon using Bestial wrath with him i was surprised at his AWESOME look while under the buff. for some reason my screenshots got deleted so if someone could post thatd be awesome. if not. well u might just have to check this one out for yourself
Re: Dropping pets that you know will be there to get retirin
Yeah it probably will turn into that, as tbh, no offense or anything, as Clutchmother was just found. Or rather, her skin, for a mob in SoS called Swampstrider. Meaning that if it took her this long to show up, in the swamps of all places, the Silithids will most likely show up somewhere else too. All you had to do was be patient man.pentupanger wrote:I am sure he'll turn into my "Oh man... why did I do that?!" hunt in the future, but I have already been through hunts like that many, many times before.

Heh, yeah. I am one of the few who posted screenshots of the Clutchmother replacement in that Strider thread... it saddened me a little.Ryai wrote:Yeah it probably will turn into that, as tbh, no offense or anything, as Clutchmother was just found. I don't think I am too attached to the actual Clutchmother, so I will probably end up ditching that skin since the Swampstrider has shown up so I can go after the blue scorpion.
I am trying to hold off a little longer than last time before I run out and just tame whatever, but considering I kind of have an open slot now it doesn't matter... unless Blizzard decides to do something crazy and get rid of a skin 1-2 weeks prior to Cataclysm hitting.
