Firewing's Scout Report: Aayren

Aayren was a white bear I've had before. I actually rather liked him, but I got bit by the spirit beast bug and ended up getting rid of him for...Loque, I believe. So, headed out to Zul'drak to grab an Iceclaw Bear, like the original Aayren, and we were off.

The name Aayren has no special ties to it, just another one of those names I think up.

* Try tanking an 80 elite with your pet
We killed an Altar Warden and a Scion of Quetzal'un. (I was lazy and didn't feel like going to Icecrown.) He had a lot of aggro issues, more so than Snarly did, and Aayren was higher level.
* Do a heroic
I avoided heroics this time just because Fire has bad gear. Like, old Naxx gear, so I'm waiting for Cata.
* Check the pet out in different lightings
His fur stays white pretty much wherever you go. Not much color difference.
* Check out swimming and possibly levitate animations (if any)
His walking animation wasn't too bad, however, when he moves, it looks like his chin is bashing the ground.... His swimming animation wasn't too bad either. It reminded me of the corehound's.

Other Info:

He eats anything. Which is awesome. I just carry meat around, since everyone else in my stables like that, and problem solved. His noises aren't too bad. He has the standard bear growl, which is pretty much the druid bear growl, and I play a druid, so....No problem there.

All in all, Aayren wasn't too bad. Sadly, he didn't click this time around, and he definitely won't stay. Come Cata, however, I may pick him up again.

----

EDIT: Another please! Firewing, Level 80 BM hunter.
Pets: King Krush, Shatter Hand Wolf, Rak'shiri, Loque'nahak.
Dislikes: Give me anything. I'm willing to try it.

Do you people keep food in your bags with the only purpose to feed to your pets? They get Guard Dog, Carrion Feeder and Bloodthirsty, you don't have to feed them... :/

To be honest, half and half. I have a bunch of chilled meat I never use just sitting in my bags, so I feed them that. I don't go out for food on purpose, but I likely would out of pure habit.

Hunter: Daranara
Pet: Netherskate
Pet name: Rex! *shrug* no idea.

First Impressions
Nether Rays are one of those pets that I always meant to try, then promptly forgot they existed. Between that and my rather lukewarm reaction to most of their skins, I had never gotten around to it.

Image

Enter Rex.

Image

The first thing that strikes me is he's so pretty. Unlike the other members in his family, I really enjoy Rex's color scheme. His reds provide a nice contrast to Dara's colors, and he looks lovely at her side.

I'm not always one for flying pets, but he brings back memories of my sporebat, so I didn't find his movements too distracting overall.

Try tanking an 80 elite with your pet
Haha, poor dear isn't meant to do that. In the interest of trying it, though, I did attempt it! It didn't go so well. Just couldn't keep up with the damage hitting him.

We did manage the 77 elite protodrake momma!

Image

Level it a level or two.
Yup, we're 77.

Do a heroic
Done! We did HToC! It was... kind of rough, really, but I think that had more to do with the brand-new tank more than any weakness on Rex's part. We still topped the damage meters, but that doesn't say much with an inexperienced group.

Do a battleground
It was a battleground. I don't do them well.

Check the pet out in different lightings
Rex pretty consistently good in all lightings He's so pretty! :D

Get a screenshot of you and your oddly fitting or entirely mismatching pet!
Done! :D

Image

In conclusion:
Rex was a surprisingly good match for me. He was quite fun, and a unique sort of pet; I don't think I've ever seen anyone else with a nether ray before.

Will I keep him? Probably not right now, but he is a solid 'maybe' as far as Cataclysm goes!

Alright, I'm game for one more! Stats are the same as always:

Hunter: Daranara
Level: 80
BM: yes!
Pets I'd prefer to not get (due to having now or having already tried in this game!): cats, warp stalkers, spirit beasts, core hounds, crabs, nether rays

Lol, weird! My wolf is named rex ;D

and he's also a red wolf, haha

well, he was ~_~
now rex is my designated wolf name lol
i'm super tired, so i'll get to trying my wind serpent tomorrow (when i wake up)
PROMISE

is it defeating the purpose if we try it in a different color? ;x

The reason i ask is because i was assigned the red wind serpent with orange wings... and while i'm interested, i really like the red serpent with red wings... not sure if this would be too big of a change or not. he just looks prettier haha.

Thanks to Teigan for the little format!

I was assigned the blue-and-yellow wasp from the Zangarmarsh. I named her (for some reason it struck me as female) ‘Shimmer’ due to the pretty glow of her wings and her gaster (that’s the wasp’s backside! I looked it up! ).

Taming Experience
Nothing really special to report. She wasn’t a rare so easy to find. I didn’t notice any attacks that would make taming her a problem, even at level.

Pet Model and Animations
The wasp is interesting. It idles grooming itself, which is kind of interesting and not very annoying. I’m not super fond of the buzzing noises she makes, but it wasn’t too bad. Nothing special about jump or swim; the same basic flying animations is all. The skin was a lovely shade and a very nice glow in darker areas.

Special Ability
Not bad. The removal of stealth and less armor is probably much more useful in PvP. The damage done is very small.

Diet
Nothing too hard to come by. Breads, cheeses, fruits, and fungus. It doesn’t drop much, but most inns have at least one of those to buy.

Will the pet be kept?
Sadly, no, I don’t think Shimmer has a permanent home with me. She is pretty and interesting, but just not the right pet for Ky.

Tanking an Elite
I tried a little, but it ended up with me Feigning and Shimmer getting squished, poor girl. Definitely more a DPS pet this one!

Get the pet a few levels
I got Shimmer too, but I wasn’t enthralled with her enough to do more.

Do a Heroic
I did two and she did decently for being low level, but nothing that really stood out.

You know... I think I'd like to try this out! I've only got one level until the free stable slot I have is gone, so... why not, I suppose. :)

So!

Tyrii is level 51 (Hopefully that doesn't make things difficult...), and is NOT able to tame exotic beasties yet. If possible, could I get something that isn't a wolf, tallstrider, bear or raptor? I've already got those guys tamed/I'm certain on taming.

Sorry for the picky order!

That's pretty much me! I have Mammoth Treats for a bit of stamina for them, and like to toss them a bit of food now and then to help keep them happy. I do it for RP too. I love my pets, even if they are 'just' pixels. :D

Ok. So i was assigned the Washte pawne (sp?) model of wind serpent, but i went (sorry!) and tamed the all red version of this.
Getting him was actually REALLY fun for me.
I went to the barrens first, to find the rare, but someone had just killed him :C
so off i went to swamp of sorrows to go to Sunken temple.

First i ran around a lot not knowing what to do xD
FINALLY i found the serpent hall and the statues there, discovered the whole area, which was really fun for me n_n
then i found him! The lovely spawn of hakkar C:

i tamed that bad boy and off i went to adventure a bit with him.
i killed a few mobs in the sunken temple, then a friend wanted to run a random, so i thought, perfect opportunity :D

Well, i got in there, and .. while my dps was decent.. the fact that he's a cunning pet just really threw me off. Cunning pets are neat, for sure, but i'm aiming for as much dps as i can do, and his dps was not very amazing.
I gave him the benefit of the doubt though and assumed it was cuz he was 76, but it was still a little disappointing :\
Unfortunately my snake friend won't be holding a spot in my stable for now, but i think come cata i will snag him again.
His dps wasn't amazing, but he was certainly nice to look at c:

i think i'm going to hold off on getting the randoms now, just so i can save you a little trouble xDD

While getting my serpent, i grabbed a scorpid on the way.
I had actually never tried a scorpid before, and this was a neat discovery for me n_n
i liked him a lot! Scorpions and spiders and bugs in general FREAK me out, but he was REALLY pretty in different lightings (he was my trash pet to get to sunken temple)

I might end up getting a scorpid come cata too, i enjoy them C:

thanks again for rolling me random pets and opening up my 'comfort zone' (if you will), Acherontia

sorry for all the hassle xD

I have Bitka and she was to get a Diseased black bear. Bitka is a Level 65 Marksman.

Heres what I think about him. His name is Bruizer and I have always been a fan of bears. I have never really cared for the black ones though as I don't like the different color face, and truthfully didn't think I would like any diseased pets.. I was pleasantly supprized with Bruizer. First think I noticed before the scars was that black all through his face. I realized as I played with him that the scars he carried did not bother me for the most part. The only time it really did was when I first sign in and see bruizer and I standing together. The scars around his eyes makes me feel like he is in pain and can't see out of them, luckily I don't see his face much when I play. I will not be keeping him as a pet, but will get me another bear when the stable slots open up. I do really like them.

* Try tanking an 80 elite with your pet
I'm a level 66, and when I took on a couple elites, Bruizer was a 63. Went into hellfire and sought out Arzeth the merciless which is a level 63 demon in the Ruins area. He is at 30k. Bruizer being a tenacity pet was specced out for this as a tank as much as I could do to him. Against Arzeth he did fairly well. I was able to keep up on the heals with him. Since I am a MM, there has been no pet that I don't take the aggro from. With Bruizer, he was able to hold it so that I could get in about 7 shots before Arzeth turned. It took only 2 feign deaths, and one small kite run to down this elite. Was quite happy for how long Bruizer held on to him. Did find, if I let Arzeth chase my kite for a few, Bruizers health would rise and he could go another round. Was able to down him.
Went afer a 2nd, a Collosus Menace. They were only at 16K, but will get 3 smaller adds during the fight. It pretty much went the same route. The adds came after me, so I trapped one and downed the others. Last add came free just as we finished off the other 2 adds. This one was not hard to do.

* Level it a level or two
Was fun and enjoyed playing with bruizer while leveling.. Had him as a tank spec. When he was 5 levels down, I was pulling them off within 3 shots. Was still able to kill them most of the time before they got to me. Got him up to level 63, and he was startig to hold them alot longer. By this time I was also taking on 2 at a time with him. Mob levels was 64 - 65.

* Do a heroic
Did a random dungeon instead. Since I'm more scared of what the group would say, (I'm somewhat of a chicken with the groups I don't know) I had kept Bruizer on passive. I had swapped over his spec to be more DPS, I was going into the BG's and changed him around. He did decent, but we were 2nd in DPS. Can not really do a comparison as I don't run dungeons very much.

* Do a battleground
This is where I like to play.. But Bruizer just is not cut out to do much against another player. I did not have any problems taking him in, but for BG's I prefer the pets that can do special talents that stun or slow them down. I also don't like the fact tenacity pets do not have dash or dive. Thier charge is good, but you have to get closer to you opponent before it will activate. I just prefer dash better.

* Check the pet out in different lightings
I did not see much change with his coloring as we went into different locations. He held the same color pretty much everywhere.

* Check out swimming and possibly levitate animations (if any)
Forgot to do this. Do not remember every seeing him swimming next to me.

* Get a screenshot of you and your oddly fitting or entirely mismatching pet
Here is the shot that I have.

Got off my lazy butt and did the next one now :D

Taigi's next challenge was the Stormcrow model. I headed over to Vengeance Landing to pick one of the Fjord Crows flying around. The tame was a little tricky; he doesn't use a knockback or anything, but you have to wait for one to fly close enough to be in range for tame pet, at least if you plan to use a frost trap. Got him easily enough once I managed to tag one though, and named him Morrigu, after the guy in my sig there (who has a raven 'familiar' ).
Raven1.png
Raven1.png (969.73 KiB) Viewed 1340 times
The first thing I noticed was that he's Ferocity, not Cunning! I thought these guys were considered birds of prey, not carrion birds, and I never even noticed until I saw Bloodthirsty on his talents page. This is actually a bonus for me, seeing as Taigi has run with a carrion bird for a while, and I love ferocity pets. Morrigu also eats meat and fish, which is convenient since I can fish for his supper if I have nothing in my bags.

I've never had a problem with flying animations. I used to hate them, but after taming Owakeri I haven't had a problem with them, so I didn't mind Morrigu's flapping. His swim animations are hilarious, but also something I'm familiar with; it's like he tries to fly through the water. XD The sound is alright, though I wish it was more raven-y and not pretty much the same thing as other carrion birds.
Raven2.png
Raven2.png (408.5 KiB) Viewed 1340 times
I didn't feel like doing a dungeon today, though if it's a carrion bird I'm reasonably sure he'll do fine, since Owakeri was always reliable. Just remember to turn of demoralizing screech.

I sort of tanked an elite with him. King Ping (the rare penguin) popped up when I was flying to do my seal-mating daily so I ran over to kill him. I sent Morrigu in to start the attack, and then a weird glitch popped up; my character kept backing up unless I jammed the W key down hard (in which case she just stood there), which meant I couldn't run forward to use any of my attacks, so Morrigu took King Ping down almost single-handedly (wingedly?) and was only at half health when he died. That's a plus for this guy. :P

I did level this guy a little bit. Despite the fact that he's a few levels lower than I am he holds aggro VERY well. I'm pretty sure this is because of his ability, Demoralizing Screech, because when I turned it off so I wouldn't kill wolvar pups by accident mobs started coming after me more than him. There's very few reasons why you would NEED to turn this ability off, however, so I would say it's a very good leveling pet overall; he can hold aggro well, but still kills things quickly, so you will go through mobs very fast.

I tried him out in different lightings. Lighting affects him a lot, actually. He looks best in brighter surroundings; if you go someplace muted (like Dragonblight) his color, what little there is, seems to wash out completely and he looks very dull.

Overall, I liked him. I didn't think this skin particularly matched my tauren; I think it'd go better with a blood elf or an undead hunter (come Cata). I DO like the look though, and might consider taming him again on a different hunter in the future. He won't be sticking around with Taigi, though.
