new pets for old families?
This is just one of those idle speculation threads but: Blizzard did say at one point there would be no new families in Cataclysm (hopefully not true) and I wondered at the time whether, instead, they might extend the range of some existing families to include some currently untameable but apparently related beasts. For instance:
Crocalisk - Diemetrodon
Devilsaurs - maybe some other dinosaur types? Would be nice to fit them in somewhere.
Rhino - Clefthoof, Kodo
Serpent: python snake model (has been mooted already)
Silithid - beetle and ant-form silithids
Spider - Nerubian skitterers* (the little spider ones), Flying Nerubians*+
Sporebat - add in the tripod marsh walkers and call them "sporebeasts"?
Wasp - Silithid Wasps
Worm - Maggot (does anyone honestly want a maggot pet? Willing to bet someone here does)
And if they do introduce stags it would make sense to include Talbuks and maybe even Shoveltusks in the same family.
Would be nice to have some way to "redeem" demonic or undead beasts (darkhounds, felboars, aforementioned Nerubians etc) via a daily or something, to turn them bestial and tameable, but that's a whole different topic.
* undead yes, I know, and spiders don't need another model, but a man can dream...
+ Anyone else think that "The Flying Nerubians" sounds like a circus act?

Re: new pets for old families?
They could add basilisks to the crocolisk family easy, since they share the same animations and everything.
Re: new pets for old families?
Personally I think shoveltusks are closer to boars.
But yeah I always hope they add new models and sub species to pet families, like what they do with the wolves and cats (wolves have like 5 different model types and cats have like 4)

Re: new pets for old families?
I don't recall them saying there wouldn't be any new family types. I do recall them saying they were thinking about including Stags and something else, back at Blizzcon. But things have changed since then, so who knows?

I want sharks. I don't care how silly they would look swimming next to me in the air.
More importantly, has there been any word on the pet trees?

Pet.....tree's? You've got me at a disadvantage here, first I've heard of pet trees.

There's no reason that lashers wouldn't make great pets, if they were classed as beasts instead of elementals
What better way to shame Deathwing than kill him with a giant, angry flower?
I, too, would be interested in a source for the claim that there will be no new pet families.

I am guessing that "pet trees" are refering to the talent sets each category of pet gets.
You know... talent trees for pets.

Re: new pets for old families?
druids already get the pet trees.having some flowers for them instead would be nice.like how mages get several polymorph spells...

Oh, hardy har har. I'm rolling. My dog had to dial 911 because I passed out after I fell out of my chair.
No really. Pet talent trees.

Re: new pets for old families?
I cannot for the life of my find my source for the "no new families", for which I apologise. It was a long time ago, one of the first big infodumps, I think, and I remember either BRK or Frostheim mentioning afterwards, but can't track it down.

Re: new pets for old families?
No, see, I was really confused. I wasn't trying to make fun or anything, I really thought you'd heard that there were going to be pet tree's.
To answer the question now that I understand it, though, they haven't done a pet pass yet, so pet's are still where they were. As BM, I have 42,000 hit points and my Devilsaur has 26,000, which I think is way to much of a gap. I am hoping that the patch that wipes our pet also adds 100% pet scaling with the hunter.
