Their inspiration was two things, the song "Avalon" by Roxy Music and the old King Arthur legend about the island of mist which is where he was buried.Sarayana wrote:Heh. Re: Your pet name Meanings?
Amarok (Mist Howler)- The name of a gigantic wolf in Inuit mythology which is said to hunt down and devour anyone foolish enough to hunt alone at night. Thought it was fitting considering his original tag. His original name was Faldren which I made up.

Kirin (Springpaw Stalker)- The Japanese spelling of Qilin, a beast from Chinese mythology which is usually depicted with flames all over its body.
Murlock (Ghost Saber)- Made up his name, actually. At the time, I was a complete newbie to the game so I was quite surprised when my brother told me that it was one letter off from a mob name.

Ciel (Aotona)- French for "sky". I wasn't being very creative.

Arktinen (Icepaw Bear)- Finnish for "Arctic". Again, I wasn't being very creative. His original name was Wojtek/Voytek after the Syrian Brown Bear in the Polish army during WWII. His second name was Kumajirou. If someone gets this, I will give them cookies.
Future pets/Old pets I'm getting back as soon as they expand those stables:
Reynard (Hill fox)- The anthropomorphic fox in the Reynard cycle, a series of French, Dutch, English, and German fables
Guiscard (Ashtail)- Named after Robert Guiscard, a Norman adventurer who was known as "Robert the Fox"
Aquilus (Daggermaw Lashtail)- Latin meaning "dark coloured"
Rex (Tyrant Devilsaur)- Latin for "king". A tyrant king. XD *is shot*
Caelus (Avian Ripper)- The personification of the sky in Roman mythology (I like mythology; did you notice?)
Luminen (Frostsaber Cub)- Finnish for "snowy"
Turul (Golden Eagle)- A large falcon in the origin myth of the Magyars
Alistair (Prairie Wolf)- From "Crystal Tipps and Alistair", an old BBC Children's programme
Grigory (Savannah Patriarch)- Russian form of "Gregory" meaning "watchful, alert"
Church (Shadowmaw Panther)- Cat from The Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare. Alternatively, the cat from Stephen King's Pet Sematary
Tibert (Stranglethorn Tiger)- Cat from the Reynard Cycle named the "Prince of Cats". This is where Tybalt from Romeo and Juliet gets his name.
Cantabile (Ridge Stalker Patriatch)- A musical term meaning "song-like"
Morla (Oasis Snapjaw)- Turtle from The Neverending Story

So they're inspired by the same legend. Very cool. Re: Your pet name Meanings?
When I tamed Rak'shiri way back in vanilla, I named her Skadi after the Norse (I think) goddess of winter and the hunt. Loque, I named him Raoden, which is a light spirit. Krush..well........I like that turtle from Finding Nemo. *cough* Arcturis is named after the guiding star, Polaris. OCJ is Godot.
However, I have been using silly names lately....Fruitloop for a Mazz, Charming for my blue scorpion, Glitterball for a firefly wasp. I'm bored of overly dramatic names....
( •_•)>⌐■-■
(⌐■_■) Handle it.
Re: Your pet name Meanings?
Moonlight (Rak'Shiri): Named for his fur. It was fitting, because it is like moonlight. All shiny and whatnot.
Bayne (King Krush): RP wise his name is Prince Bayne, son of King Krush. OOC, he is named that because how hard he is to tame. He's the bane of any hunter trying to get him, and he was almost the bane of me. Got him in the end though.
Scythe (Silithd Ravager): No real backstory. Dewclaw suggested it and I liked it.
Iorek (Shattered Ramparts wolf) Named due to his relation to Iorek, the armored bear in the Golden Compass. I thought it was fitting for an armored wolf.
Terania:
Phoenix (Dragonhawk): Named due to fiery tendencies.
Blackjack (Goreclaw the Ravenous) Cause he's dark and I though it was an awesome name for a raptor.
Kieryon (Worgen hunter):
Fel: (Diseased wolf) Thought it was a deserving name for a diseased wolf.
Trickery: (Lupos. Wiped, however. Must pick up again.) Named because I thought he was a brown ghost wolf. Turns out he was just a regular brown coyote.

When I heard 'Avalon', I thought of a planet in Stargate. :DMaximumOverdrive wrote:Their inspiration was two things, the song "Avalon" by Roxy Music and the old King Arthur legend about the island of mist which is where he was buried.Sarayana wrote:Heh. Re: Your pet name Meanings?

King Krush: Apollyon - "The Destroyer" in Greek (popular Biblical name/title). I thought it was fitting considering he's a devilsaur and destroyed me several times before I successfully tamed him.

Loque'nahak: Dante - The blue stuff in his mouth made me think of fire for some reason, which led my mind in the wee hours of the night to Dante's Inferno, hence the name Dante.
Snarler: Skaza - Slovak for "fate" (at least according to the google translator). I was sitting in his spawn area fiddling with Silver Dragon when suddenly, he appeared right in front of me. I felt it was fate that he was supposed to be my pet.
Razzashi Broodwidow: Naphthali - Hebrew for "struggling". This tame ended up being more of a struggle than I had anticipated, so I thought the name suited her well (even though it is a male name in Hebrew, I think it sounds just fine as a female name).
Other notables I've had are Tetsusaiga (Echeyakee), Sheldon (gray tortoise), Rainey (Strider Clutchmother), and Shikon (Gondria).

Re: Your pet name Meanings?
I tend to choose French names for my pets, though not always.
Some of my kitties are named SacAPuce (flea-bag), BouleDePoil (fur-ball), etc... the type of things we actually call our real-life pets.
A few of my pets have other language names: I have a white Wind Serpent named Schneedrach (loosely: snow dragon).
I DO have one Japanese name for a pet, but the inspiration was actually not Nipponese: my main's cat is called Ichi. But it's a Simpsons joke. My main hunter is called Sukurachi... Ichi and Sukurachi, anyone?
Oh, and a few of my alts have pets named for their main professions: Engineer, Alchemist, etc... (though I could never name a pet Blacksmith, the game just won't let me).
A bit of palindromic wisdom:
"Step on no pets!"
Casual player.. don't raid, don't PvP. Suffer from extreme altitis
I love pets - combat or non.

Re: Your pet name Meanings?
Shikoba - An eagle. It means "feather" in Choctaw.
Gahan - A Dreadsaber. It means "Difficult to understand" in Sanskrit, I think?
Mulogo - Black Bear. "Has more than his share" in some African language. Fitting for a chubby ol' bear!

The other two are my wolf, Ekirut, and my Chimaera, Akzurum. I tried to keep them all sounding tauren-ish. Except for Akzurum, that is...

Re: Your pet name Meanings?
OKAY BACK TO TOPIC!
Miarra's pets (current):
YönRuhtinas (called mainly Ruhtinas) - Humar the Pridelord - this is finnish, which would be roughly mean (the) Nights highness or maybe your highness of the night. This is a hard thing to translate to make sense in english IMO.
Kovis - Elder Saltwater crocolisk (while I made by accident a horde mad) - Another name in finnish this means "tough guy".
Cat - Araga - She's nameless but I have a few ideas.
Helblindi - Snarler - Named after the brother of Loki for odd reasons as to fact that Saf has/had a Snarler with the name Loki.
Siliner's pets (current):
Morowa - Bjorn (white bear) - Named by our own Kastrakovski, which means "queen" in african, and she is a queen being the only female animal.
Folami - Razormaw Lashtail (wonderful red raptor) - The name means "Respect and honor me" in Yoruba Jelani.
Alastor - Skoll - I admit this one came from a game...Alastor the sword of Dante from DMC and the rival from Viewtiful Joe.
Arctica - Echeyakee - Named after the band that was playing while I tamed him...Sonata Arctica, yes creativity sometimes doesn't work.
Mostro - Tyrant Devilsaur - Just a name I thought that worked kinda as a combination of Monstorous and Mosh I believe.

Re: Your pet name Meanings?
Raydex:
Deadlock: A deadlock is an event in which neither of two things can act, commonly used in wars as well as weather patterns. Deadlock and her race existed in a deadlock with the tauren druid, neither able to rid themselves of the other. Therefor, Deadlock.
Paranoia: When I tamed him, I was listening to some (really crappy) music. The word "paranoia" from the lyrics played as he did the glowy level and was mine. Therefor, Paranoia.
Kael: And my next warp stalker is to be DathRemar. I dunno, I was trying to think of a name, wandered into some blood elves. He's got a sickness in his mind sort of like Kael's corruption as well, which is why he's on break for Cataclysm. Therefor, Kael.
Loki: The Beast. The orcs comment that they're doomed upon seeing him in their citytownthing. He's clearly Chaotic, just like his namesake. Therefor, Loki.
Odin: My Nuramoc. I'd consider Nuramoc "ruler" of the brilliant purple chimera, and with how powerful he is, victory and war also both fit him. Also, one of my favorite games had Odin as a purple...wizard...thing. Nuramoc is purple. He'll become Thor in Cataclysm, Loki will be Odin, and my Tyrant Devilsaur will be Loki. Therefor, Odin.
Hunger: Soriid. I dunno, same as Paranoia, actually, different song, though. My sister was playing it.
Voltera:
Sunbind: Crazed Dragonhawk. Some part of me is convinced that dragonhawks are like...secretly sungods or something. They're too pretty and I drink too much caffine.
Hailfire: Deviate Adder. Named after a story character of mine, a soul-eating massive cobra who took the form of a handsome, sexy young man.

Re: Your pet name Meanings?

My pets are
Humar the Pridelord - KiseMiseSöt (roughly means KittyMittyCute or something childishly cute in swedish) I actually had the name for my first pet at lvl 10, my spotted dun morogh kitty, but as I found Humar I wanted him more. I've always had my stable-slots full, but will get the spotted one back in Cata

Loque'nahak - Nattfrost (meaning Nightfrost in swedish) I remember spending lots of time (for me atleast) to find him, since I knew from the moment I saw him on model viewer that I just had to have him, no matter what. Was looking for him for several hours one weekend at a LAN-party, but no luck. The weekend ended, and me and my BF packed up our computers and left for home. The internet connection on my computer was down for some reason, and borrowed his for just a single fly-by. At the third spawn point I found him! I was shaking so hard when he was mine after the tame

Crocoslime - Radioactive. Well, do I really have to explain this? He's a green slimey ooze, I wouldn't hesitate for a second that this is the case

Molten core hound - Magmadar. Just because I heard that this was the only (or at least one of few) boss-name you could give to a pet, and it was accepted.
Skoll - Anniversary. This was actually my most lucky tame ever. My BFs friend wanted me to have him, since he thought he looked cool, so I thought why not. Flew around his spawnpoints one time and logged out. Maybe I did a second run before the tame, don't remember. But anyway, I logged in one day, probably about mid-day, there he was and tamed in an instant. Spent no more than 15 min looking for him, probably less. The name was/is actually a temporary name, and was given to him since that day when I tamed him was my parents 30th wedding anniversary. Wanted to give him a name including pearl (since it's called a pearl wedding after 30 years) but all the names sounded too girly and he should not have that kind of name

Pets I no longer have, but will be getting back in Cata:
Jormungar - Likmask (meaning corpse worm/maggot in swedish) just because that is one badass worm!

Armored black boar - Pansarvagn (panzer/tank in swedish) another name considered was Panzerfaust (an anti-tank weapon from WWII) just wanted something that was fitting considering his armor, and since I have always tried to have swedish names (could not have guessed, right

Man, this feels like just a big wall of text, but I hope someone will enjoy reading it

//Hesantia, lvl 80 draenei hunter
Re: Your pet name Meanings?

Mali (Humar the Pridelord): Got him at level 43. I wanted a darkish, proud, evil name. I was randomly looking for words and I came across Malignant: causing harm, stress or suffering deliberately. Well, Malignant is an ugly word so I shortened it down to Mali, which is much prettier.

Doof (King Mosh): Got him as tyrant devilsaur at 60 and then retamed as King Mosh at 80. I immediately fell in love with the devilsaurs personality, he seemed like a big goofball. A doofus even. Hence, Doof.

Haikili (Skoll): Got him at 80. Did a lot of research on his name. I knew I wanted a god or deity name to do with weather, preferably thunder or lightning. I narrowed it down to a list of about 10 names that I loved. There was a few that I really liked but I just kept coming back to Haikili, which is a Hawaiian god of thunder.
Samuel (Grubthor): Got him in my 60s and then abandoned. Retamed at 80. I fell in love with this worm right away and I wasn't sure what to name him so I asked my friend, who kept saying random actor names. He said Samuel L. Jackson, and I agreed. xD So Samuel the worm was born. xD
Boss (The Beast): Got him at 80. I wanted a short, strong sounding name. I ended up wanting to just call him Boss, since he thinks hes the boss.

~
Some pets I let go and pets on other hunters:
Phantas (Ghost Sabre): Short for phantasm, something ghostly.

Februus (Nuramoc): Roman god of death and putrefaction, thought it was very fitting for that evil guy.
Baac/Beardo (Echakayee): Just two names that came to me, the first one is pronounced 'bok'.
Snickers (Scarlet Tracking Hound): For the sound a hyena makes!
Shiboo (Frostsabre Pride Watcher/Gondria): My BE hunter's only companion lore wise, just something that came to me when I started playing.
Buddy (Ghostpaw Lynx): Named after my cat Buddy, who has now passed on <3
Nukk (Red Raptor): Ashiena's first pet, name just kinda came to me.
Rahjah (Tiger): Named after the tiger in Aladdin!
Maia (Dreadsabre): I wanted a nurse or motherly type pet, as my pets tend to me guys. A friend told me it meant nurturing mother in some language, but I can't remember what.
Dehyo (Warhound): Translates to fierce or something like that in-game when you speak in troll.

I feel like Ive written alot, but I've had a lot of pets! This isn't even the full list XD

Re: Your pet name Meanings?

Sandfur's pets:
Scrabble (Hecklefang Hyena) - Not much of a meaning here, but there IS a reason to his name! After I had tamed him, he kept doing the emote of scraping at the ground with his paws.. And the name Scrabble came to mind!
Harley (King Krush) - No meaning whatsoever, just something that had randomly come up in my Name That Pet thread for him XD
Vixen (Loque'Nahak) - No 'meaning', but a reason! I found her in December, and well.. In the holiday spirit, the name Vixen came up when I was talking with my mom about names for her, and after I tamed her, she ended up with the name Lunaria, but I quickly changed it to Vixen as soon as I got my hands on a Certificate of Ownership.
Voltali (Skoll) - Again, more of a reason than a meaning; she's named after Jolteon! Whose French name is none other than Voltali!
Banryu (Spirit of Atha) - Well.. She's named after a weapon from an anime that I like. And since 'ryu' means 'dragon' in Japanese, it kind of suited a hydra. >.>
Wolfwhisper's pets:
Kinen (Gondria) - I honestly cannot remember what his name means, but it has something to do with 'memory' in Japanese. Thought it'd be nice for a ghost cat.
EverRoar (Araga) - A name my dad came up for her when I first tamed her.
Rysha (Ice Serpent) - A name I had randomly thought up.
Leera (Frost Leopard) - Same as Rysha, randomly thought up name.
Blitzen (Loque'Nahak) - Found and tamed in December, same as Vixen, soooo.. I named him Blitzen to go along with her!
Varadoria's pets:
Gahiji (Warp Chaser) - Means something like 'hunter' in some language I cannot remember for the life of me XD
Taiga (Deviate Adder) - Means 'river' in Japanese, perfect for a blue-ish serpent.
Asavari (Arcturis) - Oh jeez, I REALLY can't remember what his name means.. But it suits Arcturis XD
DartFire (Azzere the Skyblade) - Sounds cool and suits him.
Harrow (Bloodfalcon) - Due to how harrowing an adventure it was to tame her! Get it? lol
