Hmm... if the despawn is the key, then that may indicate that there is no way to get the oil-covered raven.. :(

I'm not a big fan of the wolf, but would love to have the raven for pvp...

I'm not sure if this will help those without the quest but, i noticed that the 55-D collect-a-trons that walks around the area occasionally will remove the oil from a wolf and then it runs away and despawns like if you threw it the meat. Maybe it would be possible to use this to tame one if you don't have any meat. I don't know if the oil removal process or aggro from the bot would cause trouble.

Yay! I finally got my wolf today. I had to run out to Borean on my baby paladin and ask around in general to get someone to help me out, but I found a really nice guy leveling his lock. He said his main was a hunter too, so he understands the love of hard to get pets ;P

Image

Just a note, on the last try I did to tame my wolf, it looked like the tame beast had finished before the wolf despawned at first, and the wolf seemed to turn normal before disappearing. However, when I called pet to dismiss him, he came out all black and oily ^_~

Got him today after about 5-6 tries.
Just offered 500g to anyone who hadn't done the quest yet and what I was trying to do when I found one. :)
After paying attention to the timers, I found the trick was to time how long was left when he started to run off and just go from there.

Think I'll name him Slick...

So... as a L.71 hunter with no haste points at all... in what order do I need to try and do everything?

Set ice trap in the spot I think the wolf will run to after I throw the meat at him?
Move back a little.
Throw meat.
The aggressive wolf will run towards me and hit the trap.
When the ice trap only has 6-7 seconds left I start to tame.
When the trap ends (correct me if I am wrong) he'll turn neutral and "eat" the thrown meat.
Then the wolf will turn around and run off to disappear... and hopefully the tame will end right when it disappears (or a split second later).

Did I put everything in the right order? Do put the trap in the right place?

Remember I am not using the speed potion on the above order.

If I was to actually use a haste/speed potion at what point do I need to use it? Right before I start the tame?

Curumor, how did you time how long it took after he ran off?

I did it with two different hunters. These were at 70 and 80.

Serendipity, the level 70 hunter, had a lightning speed elixir. That's it.

Firewing, the level 80 hunter, had roughly 100 or so haste (Just run of the mill quest gear, that happened to have haste.) Also that's it.

S's tame time: 18 seconds.
F's tame time: 19.5 seconds.

The timing was vastly different. Firewing took three tries or so, at roughly 6ish seconds. Seren was always early, and was at 7 seconds or so.

Thereby, if you have little haste, I recommend about 6 seconds or so.

Also, Pent. The strategy you're using should be fine. If you're using pots, I'd make a macro.

It seems that my biggest problem is for some reason the wolf disappears a lot as soon as I start to tame it (with 6-7sec left on freezing trap)...

When I began trying tonight I was doing pretty good... the first few tries was awesome. I had lass than a second left on tame beast before it disappeared a few times, had tame beast go off a split second before it disappeared (no flash... just the nameplate turning blue before disappearing), but now I lost my groove.

Like I said, most of the time now it happens like this:

I watch the wolf to see which way it is walking.
Lay a freezing trap, and back up.
Throw the meat... wolf gets hit with it and runs towards me and hits the trap.
I wait for the timer on Freezing Trap to just hit 7 and then quickly hit tame...
A split second (6sec left on trap) later the wolf just vanishes while still in the ice block, and I am off to find another one to try it on...

What am I doing wrong?

I have also tried to agro the aggressive wolf and when it attacks me set the trap, toss the meat, wait til 7sec are left and start taming... this seems like it might work if I get the timing down, but I am not sure if letting it agro me first and doing it that way will let it work.

Any suggestions?

I just managed to grab mine after a nice person helped me. It took about 7 tries. I didnt want to bother him so after the sixth time, i said this is the last time and then ill let you finish your quest. I managed to get him on this last try. I set the trap down and then he stood behind me and threw the meat. The wolf ran forward into the trap and i hit tame beast when the timer hit the lower left corner. He despawned so i didnt think i got him but i hit call pet and there he was. I named mine Shadow for the time being until i can find a more suitable name.

Hmm... I must be doing SOMETHING wrong... the wolf/wolves is/are now starting to do weird things...

Remember, I have no haste and I am L.71...

This happens more often than not... I set the trap, throw the meat, wolf runs towards me and lands in the trap... when the trap gets to 7sec left the wolf vanishes without me even trying to hit it with tame beast.

I have also had the wolf break free from the ice trap with 3-5sec left and run off while I am still taming it... I am 100% sure I had time left on the ice trap because I keep my eye on it til it wears off. I thought beasts couldn't break free if they were caught in it...

I am not sure if I need to blame server lag or not, because sometimes the 7sec ice trap vanish (vanish while still frozen) happens and other times it doesn't... but it happens a lot more than it doesn't happen.

Hmm, I had to start the tame around the 8-9sec mark. The problems I was having with it despawning in the ice trap and the trap breaking all resulted in me not giving him enough room to run into the trap.

If I had seen this sooner I'd have been able to help you, sorry about that. But yeah I had the same problem when I was helping my hubby. I'd run right up to the wolf, face-pull, the chuck the meat right as he was getting trapped, and sure enough he'd despawn while still in the trap. You have to give the wolf a few steps of running towards you before he gets in the trap. The meat has a pretty good range on it, so you really don't need to be right in its face to throw the meat.

Grats on your wolf, glad it finally worked out. :)

Well, I started off by using the strategy given earlier, starting tame when 7secs were left on trap.

But first try was too fast. So I tried again, but was too slow.

So I started laying the trap about halfway from where it would stop to eat, started tame at 7secs and took note of how long was left on Tame Beast when the trap broke.
The perfect time seemed to be about 11-12secs left on Tame Beast when trap breaks, leaving it at about 3-4secs when wolf stops eating and starts running off.

Got it on second try after that. Remember that distance is also a factor. The closer your trap is to wolfs stop-and-eat point, the earlier you need to start taming. So if you can't lay a trap too far ahead, you may, for example, need to start taming with 8-9secs left on trap.

It's just a bit of trial and error to get your timing right. But when he stops eating, there should be about 3-4secs left on Tame Beast, in my experience.

Hey hey!

Since I was able to get it on my Alliance hunter after several hours of tinkering... I kinda want it on my Horde hunter too.

If anyone plays on Area 52 Alliance side and would be willing to help me get him there that would be awesome.

Be warned though... it took me several hours to finally get the timing down for my L.71 hunter with no haste, but my Horde hunter is 80 with some haste (not much)... and you'll need to be around L.70 (or higher) in order to get the quest in Borean Tundra.

I would consider just moving my 71 hunter over to Area 52, but doing a server (and account) transfer twice just for a pet is a little costly.

My experience on Area 52 was that it was hard to find alliance players, and when there were some in the area, none of them had ANY interest in helping a horde. One was nice, and would have helped, but he'd already completed the quest of course.

I asked in trade on horde side if anyone had an alliance alt around 70-72. That's how I finally found someone. I hope you find someone willing to help!

Shucks.

I thought about asking in trade, but I figured someone would do it and then ask for a lot of gold to help. I have maybe 400-500g on Area 52 right now because I moved my DK over to Aerie Peak with the rest of the gold.

Giving gold to people for helping me isn't the problem... it's giving them 400-500g and them wanting 1000g... and thinking I am holding out on them. I actually offered 1000g for help looking for Aotona one time... a week or so later I tamed it while a L.77 priest threw me a couple of heals as they passed by... I opened up trade and put in 1000g and they closed the window saying, "you needed some healing, and I don't charge to heal =)" ... even after I explained it they wouldn't take the money...

Yeah. DO NOT THROW MEAT RIGHT AWAY.

Trap them. Wait till 7-9 seconds left in trap, then throw meat, then tame beast.

Did that person complete the quest? Or could Pent just ask him? :D

Possibly... I will send the name in a PM. I would hate for that person to get completely inundated with people asking for pet taming. Hehe
