This is the only thread that's been solely dedicated to this sentiment. It's completely fair to those who are generally unhappy with the new pets and keeps the other threads clear for those excited about those individual pets.

No. I probably won't get any of these on my main, but you know what, that's ok. I don't have to absolutely Love every new rare that comes along.

Could've sworn I saw a thread already with this sentiment. But then shouldn't this be in 4.2 since it's not live?
On topicness.....I love the spirit beasts and the purple spider.

Since it is more of a rant thread than an information thread, I don't think it will be missed over there.Jessibelle wrote:shouldn't this be in 4.2 since it's not live?

I actually didn't even see this wasn't in the 4.2 threads. Agreed with Gorman, though.

But it will confuse people cause it's about 4.2 content and all 4.2 content...rant or otheriwse...should be with 4.2.
EDIT: Looks like someone else brought it to the mods attention to get it moved.

Re: Anyone else disappointed by the new 4.2 rares?
I'm just thankful that Blizzard continues to add more and more things for hunters to tame. It keeps the game interesting for me. The only reason I started a hunter was Loque-and while grinding to get to tame him, I found a number of other pets that I really enjoyed-so much so that I have two other hunters now along with my first and I'm playing them all rather routinely.
I'm pleased with the new cat spirit beasts, I never clicked with Loque personally, but these two 'new' ones are much more my style. I'm not overly fond of the owl-it's too much like Olm for my tastes to bother taming him. I'm a little sad that the other rares are all spiders-but that purple one is pretty enough that I will likely go after it.
I'm not going after many this patch, but I will keep my eyes open for the patches that come after this and hope we continue to get such a variety of different pets for our hunters. Warlcoks I know hardly get any variety in their minions, so I'm thankful for every new pet addition made for hunters when I know they could stop giving us so many options.
My only complaint is that if Blizzard keeps adding so many neat pets they need to give us even more stable slots-like make five more that you can purchase or something. I'm running out of room and have already made two little hunters just to tame more pets. I don't want to make a fourth, but at this rate I likely will have to!

Re: Anyone else disappointed by the new 4.2 rares?
I don't see any reason to complain. There's already so many pets to choose from, I'm not desperate for more. Personally I think it's really cool that Blizzard is showing signs of adding more solo challenge... even if it's just for rare tames.
Plus compare cata vs wotlk; wotlk had just one "hard rare" - a devilsaur with a unique color. Now here in cata we've already got 2 hard rares (Terrorpene and Ghostcrawler), and they're giving us 8 more. That's 10 times as much as we had in wotlk.
As far as unique models... that's not really how it works in wow, for the most part. Pretty much the only ones that come to mind are Loq and the scaly corehound, and their models were designed first and foremost as prominent NPCs - their use as hunter pets was secondary (in the latter's case that wasn't even on the horizon when it was built).

Re: Anyone else disappointed by the new 4.2 rares?
i had started a new topic because i somehow didn't see this one, but i'll just copy it here to join the conversation.
I really REALLY wanted to be excited. I was so looking forward to these. But it's just a pile of the same spider, and 3 reskinned models that I already have. On top of that, 3 of them are Spirit Beasts in a time where there are 0 incentives to being BM. Sigh.
Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the fact that there are taming challenges. I think that is beyond awesome and I will set out to tag and release every one of these just so I can do those. But I probably won't keep anything. Maybe the green spider, which by the way is decidedly less awesome than the ones you can't tame now. I might also replace my Gondria with one of the new kitties, depending on how common they become.
Was it really too much to hold out hope that with 8 (8!!?) new rares and a fire themed content patch that we might have more than 2 types of pet or that one of them might have been a lovely phoenix?

Re: Anyone else disappointed by the new 4.2 rares?
First:
We were in no way promised pets with new skins/models.
And because I feel like Wain put it succinctly:
No where in there does it say "totally unique brand new pets." It says "unique taming challenge." That's totally different from pet looks.8 new rare tamable beasts have been added, each of which provides a unique taming challenge. Will you be the first hunter to tame Deth'tilac, the rarest and most powerful of them all? Players will need to progress through the Hyjal Regrowth and Molten Front daily questing areas in order to unlock access to the full gamut of taming challenges.

And because I feel like Wain put it succinctly:
And to quote myself:This isn't some trend where Blizzard is going to just recolor old spirit beasts from now on. This is a rare occurrence where other spectral cat skins have been in the database since the model was created. Three were made, one was chosen for Gondria and two skins that many people find very beautiful were left unused. Just like many other awesome non spirit beast skins have sat unused until Cataclysm and are now available for those who want them. The only other spirit beast where this is the case is Skoll (again, 2 unused skins).
Noah has been going well beyond the call of duty to ensure missing skins are available for those who want them. It's probably approaching 200 skins now. He's been simply amazing. With the missing spectral cat skins he found a good way to ensure they were now available for those who do want them (and many people do seem to love them). I'm sure at some point in the future he'll find a way to include the missing Skoll skins too. I hope so.
You don't have to like them, and it's fine to say you prefer the original Gondria skin. But using terms like "lame" or "lazy" as if you somehow deserve them to slave over three brand special new models purely for spirit beasts in this patch, for just one spec of one class, is just absurd.
For the record, nearly every model in the game is a remodel/reskin of some other model. Many of the models all use a similar base skeleton that Blizzard just paints a skin over or modifies something to be "unique."

No incentive to be BM? You mean being equal DPS to the other specs and having extra pet talents/pets isn't incentive?Vetiver wrote:i had started a new topic because i somehow didn't see this one, but i'll just copy it here to join the conversation.

I don't want to sound mean or overly defensive, but there *is* reason to play BM if you truly love the spec. We're perfectly competitive with our fellow specs, heck I have yet to see any other spec beat my Hunter and her spirit beast in our raids. And I am not a perfect/elitist BM hunter, so if I can be competitive, there's no reason anyone else can't be

And I'm glad they added more spirit beasts. To be fair, Spirit Beasts are still the least represented family in the game. Technically there's only 6 spirit beasts in game? That's the lowest of any family if I'm recalling the families correctly (and I could be wrong... XD)
No, there's nothing wrong with hoping there's new pets. Heck, even I was hoping a skeletal dog would be in there.Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the fact that there are taming challenges. (And this isn't directed at you Vetiver)
I too am disappointed in the 8 new rares only because none of them are anything I was really hoping for. BUT. BUUUUUUUUUUUUUUT
And I want to express how big this but is-
BUT
I think it is absolutely awesome Blizzard listened to us (yet again) and gave us taming challenges. This opens a whole new door of opportunity!
Who cares if I don't like the spiders that much cause they scare me, or if all the cats are Gondrias (but I do want that blue one~)? Just think, we may have more challenging tame pets of all sorts of a variety!
Maybe one day there'll be a spirit monkey you have to interact with trees (like in Scholazar with the vine quests) in order to get him to come down into tame range (dude I would so tame a spirit monkey).
Overall, sure, I'm sad I didn't get the pets I wanted (firehawk/fire bone dogs), but I'm happy to see these models used cause I know a lot of people wanted them. I'm glad there are more than just spirit beasts added as well. And I sincerely look forward to the future of what this newly opened door brings us.

Re: Anyone else disappointed by the new 4.2 rares?
being "competitive" is not good enough for team captains and raid leaders. they want "best." so far BM has never had "best." a competent MM hunter will hands down beat the pants off a BM hunter every time.
which sucks because it is my favorite spec to play! but enough offtopic!
but something i didn't say before was that not only am i not keen on any of the new pets, but this patch is also robbing me of my proudest, hardest, and most epic tame as being special. terropene is no longer going to be a hard won war trophy with a story, and neither is black madexx for that matter. i don't have that color, but i know i would be absolutely furious if my greenie became common.
the lack of variety in such a huge number of new rares is probably so disappointing to me because in giving us these, they are effectively taking 2 others away. if they had given us one spider and one owl and not made two hard rares into common skins, i doubt there would be any rant topics at all.

Re: Anyone else disappointed by the new 4.2 rares?
They aren't taking your pets away. Just because there are common skins doesn't make your pet any less special. Terror was an extremely common skin (use wise) anyway. The point is that you tamed the rare. You got smashed and crushed and waited hours for your pet. What does it matter if someone else decided to go and tame the easier version?Vetiver wrote:being "competitive" is not good enough for team captains and raid leaders. they want "best." so far BM has never had "best." a competent MM hunter will hands down beat the pants off a BM hunter every time.

And, because Terror is so common anyway, most people won't even notice the difference.
I think it comes down to you remembering the hell you went through to get your pet. I know that you probably won't change your mind on this topic, it's a widespread way of looking at it and you are just as entitled to it as I am to mine, but... oh, I dunno. Just remember that you tamed Terror. It's your pet, and I'm sure you love it. You may or may not have given it a personality, a background, god only knows what. No other pet has that exact same personality/background/feel by your side. And isn't that all that really matters?

Re: Anyone else disappointed by the new 4.2 rares?
Erm....BM is the best right now technically if you wanna go min/max. AdamSavage pointed this out to me in two previous threads. BM is ahead by 400 dps. It'll probably be ahead moreso after 4.2 MM nerfs. So....yeah....other than that standpoint, there is no best specs and any GOOD raid leader would know that. *has beaten the pants and socks off of SV and MM hunters*Vetiver wrote:being "competitive" is not good enough for team captains and raid leaders. they want "best." so far BM has never had "best." a competent MM hunter will hands down beat the pants off a BM hunter every time.

Also I'd like to point out....Terrorpene was not a hard tame.....now The Beast, however.....that was an epic of all epic tames. I think a few of us, like myself, remember how much of a pain in the ass he was.

Re: Anyone else disappointed by the new 4.2 rares?
Terrorpene is barely ever seen on any of the servers I play on - and these include some of the largest and oldest.
So when 4.2 hits yes that will make for quite the stark difference in fire turtle populations.
Just sayin.
And Terrorpene absolutely is a hard tame - unless you A) load up on FR or B) have a ton of HP (for the area). The Beast was a good deal harder still, but TP easy? Nope.

Re: Anyone else disappointed by the new 4.2 rares?
Pasting here from another thread (Last time Kalli, I swear! xD)Gimlion wrote:Honestly, people would not be as disappointed if Blizzard didn't make them out to be so great. I love every one of them (except the owl), and I'll likely tame each of the spiders (Gondria will be my only spectral kitty), but I think that should Blizzard have just put them in and said something like "We have put in a few previously unavailable skins to tame, but you have to be clever enough to tame any of the 8"
When Blizzard stated that there would be 8 new taming challenge rares to find, many people expected "Loques", I knew that they wouldn't be "Loques", as no new models were datamined. People expect too much, and get far too disappointed when it turns out the way that all evidence was pointing too (There were several unused Gondria skins, and 3 fire spiders left out, and no new models were made for this patch, except the owl, which was slowly built) is *GASP* actually how it ended up!
If this would have been any other patch, and they were just thrown in and found, people would be far more excited, imo. It's like this to me: Someone promised us candy, we were expecting 8 Kingsized chocolate bars of a never before seen brand of chocolate, what we got was 6 Kingsized chocolate bars of existing brands, only with some sort of variety to make them different enough, and 2 Kingsized Chocolate bars that are fun to get, and everybody whined, even though they could have just said thanks. They should have just left the 'candy' out for us to find, then no one could be disappointed, as no one knew anything like this was coming.
Like it or hate it, I don't think you can be mad at Blizzard, they are showing that they care for the Hunter community, and are proving that by making HARD tames, not impossible to find tames, and this is something I, and many others here have been wanting since WotLK...
I also want to say, that as much as I like the spiders and cats, I do wish it was more than just 5 spiders. I think if we'd have gotten the other "Skolls" or something to that effect, it'd have been cooler, but these are great as is. I love the challenges (except the owl, everything about that bloody bird just makes me unhappy... heh) however, and think that this could pave the way for future taming challenges, or even quests... xD

Yes it would be nice if they could see their way to making solo'ing / outdoor quests more challenging!Gimlion wrote:I also ... think that this could pave the way for future taming challenges, or even quests... xD

Hopefully this is a step in that direction.

Mmn, I kinda like the Gondrias and want one or two of the spiders. But honestly I'm 'meh' about them. I don't think I'm going to camp them. I want the blue Gondria for sure, but I sincerely doubt I'll get them fast since there's going to be 99 gabillion hunters in the area.
