Re: A hah! Figured it out! Oil Stained Wolf Tame!
Just wanted to post that thanks to this forum, I got my wolf! Took about 10 tries. Toon is level 76 with about 5.8 haste and had to start my tame at 7.5 seconds left in the trap as other have said. So far I have switched stable pets and then called him out again without any problems.
Thanks for all the posts and explanations on how to get the nice looking pet.

It's not about the quest, it's about the timing.bloodysam wrote:You can do it without the quest

Re: A hah! Figured it out! Oil Stained Wolf Tame!
A ally player MUST HAVE THE QUEST FOR ANYONE TO TAME THE WOLF. Read the first few pages of the thread.
This was tested hundreds of times by different players without the quest and timing didn't mean a damn thing because the end result was still the same.
I believe this was the original thread where it was heavily tested.
http://forums.wow-petopia.com/viewtopic ... ained+wolf
No one knows how the original person got the animal. As a matter of fact I think the original person wasn't even sure they ended up with it.
If it's a matter of timing as stated then by all means abandon a pet you have and start taming then report back that you were able to do this without having the aid of the wolf turning neutral to perform the tame.
So Antares and bloodysam please test this for us and take screen shots and show us how it was /is done without the quest and someone turning the wolf neutral.

Oh, I have never tried. And I have no desire to try. I was just reiterating what I've read elsewhere. I think it was on wowhead? *shrug*zedxrgal wrote:So Antares and bloodysam please test this for us and take screen shots and show us how it was /is done without the quest and someone turning the wolf neutral.

Wowhead posters aren't always accurate. They probably meant that the person taming didn't need to have the quest (which is true), not that the quest wasn't needed at all.Antares wrote:Oh, I have never tried. And I have no desire to try. Re: A hah! Figured it out! Oil Stained Wolf Tame!
Hello, I just tamed this awesome jet black wolf! 21/10/2010. So, if you have been having trouble getting the wolf to stay black, here is how I did it. To start with, u need someone to feed the bait for the quest as stated above. Soon as the oil-stained wolf changes for quest, ice trap and tame. If you timed it right he will disapear in the end of tame, not become friendly. Then, open yr spell book to "call pet" and click the first whistle in the lineup. This should call a black wolf! Remember to feed and rename it right away. After that he will show up in yr list of pets.

Grats! Yeah its a bit more glitchy now than it was before the 4.0.1 patch, but its still doable. Its a little harder now. The best way I found was a strategy from Quicksilver here: http://forums.wow-petopia.com/viewtopic ... 35&start=0Elbow wrote:Hello, I just tamed this awesome jet black wolf! 21/10/2010. Let it smack you in the face for a bit, throw the meat, then hit tame right away. (adjust accordingly after trial and error)
Re: A hah! Figured it out! Oil Stained Wolf Tame!
I saw two videos, both saying meat-trap-tame. However, I couldn't really get it so out of frustration, I went for the aggro-meat-tame approach and it was a success. This was done with the help of a friend who had the quest.
I think the sweet spot is right after the meat was thrown. Depending on your haste, you'd have to time when to tame. Mine was about 2-3 seconds after the meat was thrown just right before the wolf eats.
There were a couple of errors after the tame which made me think I failed yet again: there was no new wolf in the stable, and I couldn't tame (message was "you are already summoning" or something like that). So I had to quit WoW... and when I came back, the wolf was there.
Named him Grimnoir.

Has anyone had any success in taming this post 4.0?
I was trying it with a friend earlier today and there were so many times where it looked at though it should have worked.
Edit:
You need to completely quit wow and come back in after the successful tame before it will show in stables.

Me. Got it the other day. Check my approach just above your post.Kiingeh wrote:Has anyone had any success in taming this post 4.0?

I was also thinking it didn't work anymore.

Re: A hah! Figured it out! Oil Stained Wolf Tame!
i picked him up yesterday with the meat and trap method. waited until the trap timer hit 16 sec then started tame. he despawned at the end of tame and i had to log out and back in but he was there ready to fight something. took me about 20 tries.
btw - even though i haven't seen anyone else from Tanaris on these forums if any horde players want this guy let me know. i will be deleting quest so i can help out.

Just picked him up after many MANY tries. I didn't use a trap, but timed it so that I hit tame as soon as i saw him start eating, with my haste rating being 543.
