I didn't mean to sound like we shouldn't have rares at all. What I'm after is that if the developers decide to use a model/skin that is currently rare, there's no point in the whole "Boo common *insert name here*" attitude. The "rage" if you will.

And even if the mob itself isn't unique anymore, I will still know that I have the rare version and thus I will like my pet more because I went through the time and effort to get it. Also, quite frankly, generally no-one else gives a damn what some hunter has as a pet. (Especially other classes.) Which is the ONLY 'downside' a common counterpart will have. "Oh no, now that random passerby, who I probably never see or hear about again, doesn't know if my brown scorpid is a shiny or not!"

Also, even if your Terrorpenes were still rare, there is the chance of this following scenario happening. Let me tell a little story:

When I came back to WoW after cata was released I didn't play my hunter much yet. She was stuck somewhere at the lvl 70. Instead I played my druid and leveled her up to 85 and did tol barad and whatever. When I saw someone with a fiery turtle I thought Nemesis was tameable. I hadn't done any research on new pets/rares at that point because I wasn't sure if I was going to even level my hunter or not. So yeah: How many non-hunters do research on what is tameable and what is not? ;)

Pitch happens; people get over it. If you're going to abandon a pet just because its skin just became available on a 'common' beast, I view that as a favor to you; that pet was just clogging a stable slot if you only kept it because it was a unique rare.

If Sambas became common I would be happy that the hunters who want a lion but don't have the time or means to camp on a highly patrolled area wouldn't have to make-do with one of those ye olde models. Karoma is arguable anyways because one can still tame (at least for now) a Ghostpaw Runner in Ashenvale. Firelands would be a logical place to put fire turtles in so what can we do? Developers will use their resources if the need be and I'm pretty sure that kind of requirement will overdrive any "yay shiny rares" status the model might have. ;P

And yes, I have all three: Sambas, Karoma and Terrorpene.
So, why have rares at all?

Honestly, I can't understand why some people (not you Yoruko) want to have everything without any work or effort (or luck)... While I don't mind some of the Madexx skins becoming common, if they were all available, I'll probably just ditch the ones I have. I don't use them for raiding, so why bother if I can grab one anytime?

There should a select few pets that require time, effort, and some luck to get.
Pets that require time, luck, and effort? Pre-4.0.1, you could consistently get such a challenge from The Beast, and without fear of some loser ganking your tame. When it comes to rares, it's all about luck. You can improve your odds, but it's not impossible for you to never see a certain beast spawn.

I wouldn't. I'd cheer! :headbang:

I have a newborn to take care of. She is my priority, not camping for a rarespawn somewhere. I rarely get the chance to log in the game for more than 10 minutes at a time between feeding her, burping, changing diapers, soothing her when she's fussy, laundry, dishes and other household chores. She is my full-time job and I don't get days off. The time for rare camping just doesn't exist for me anymore, and I know I'm not alone. I will not neglect my child because of a game.

Putting a rare skin on something common is, I feel, a courtesy or a hat-tipping from the devs to those of us who just can't camp some rare beast on the hope that we'll get the tame. If Karoma was made a common mob, I'd squeal with joy! Finally, a spirit beast that didn't require weeks of camping.

I'm trying to be respectful here, but what you are saying is that there really shouldn't be any unique rare skins because you don't have the time to camp for one? So the game should be simplified to meet your schedule? Or to ask it another way, should my enjoyment in the hunt for rares be taken away because you can't participate? (And no, I don't consider a named rare with the same skin as a common beast to be a challenge).

I'm honestly asking the question here, not trying to be rude.

Let me ask it another way, why do you like those rare skins and desire them? Perhaps is it because they are rare? If they all were common would you still want them?

I think a lot of people here wouldn't keep most of their rares if they were common. You'd pick the two or three that you really like and the rest would go away. Of all mine, I'd probably keep 3 (Loq, Terrorpene, and Skoll). The rest?.. if they were common, meh..

Perhaps the worst thing that Blizz did was to give us 25 slots. It devalued the pets we have. 10 slots would have been enough to cover raid buffs and have a few rares, but still would make you think about what you kept.

I, of course, understand the appeal of a unique rare spawn. It's contested, hard to find, and once you finally DO tame it, other people know how much trouble you went through to obtain it. However, aside from certain Madexx colors and Terrorpene, there are plenty of other pets you can obtain just to be trophies (all of the spirit beasts, for example). While taming a rare that has common counterparts may detract from the whispers you receive while afking in Org, the fact still stands that you invested time into finding it, and whether or not there's a common mob with the same skin somewhere else in the World shouldn't take away from how special it is to you, personally.

I don't buy into the cry "Rabble rabble rabble I worked hard to obtain this super special awesome pet and I DEMAND that it stay super special awesome!" It's pretty blatantly selfish in a lot of ways. As I said before, there are plenty of trophy pets that will REMAIN trophy pets, so why flip out when a handful are being made available to everyone?

I worked hard for my black Madexx. Do I give a fantastic flying fuck that the skin is being used on a common mob? No, I don't.
"But pengupuff, how could this be!?"
It's my favorite color on that particular model, and the fact remains that I DID invest a lot of time into getting that particular mob. I know that, and it's enough for me. There are plenty of other ways to wave your epeen around in WoW aside from trophy pets. :D

And it's just as selfish to say "I want all the pets without any work".

Your bolded part is key, but the flavor of the month pets is what everyone wants. I have no problems with some rares becoming common, but, the problem is, which ones? No one is gonna agree, so someone will always be bent.

Edit: But really, this discussion is never going to end.

I have my own opinion, but it's already been stated. Slickrock, you're not alone in your opinion, and the opposing opinion is not alone, either. However, it's silly to think you can change someone's mind on this. It's not going to happen. While this might be a discussion, and not an argument, it's kind of devaluing the original topic, isn't it?
Anyway, just popping in to say that this has been discussed in great length before.

I'd have to disagree with both the who point here and the 25 slots devaluing pets. I personally use all 25 of the pets I have, and I use skins that I like. If they happen to like rare or boss forms I go after them simply because I like the thrill of the hunt. I love when NPC scan goes off deafening me. It great excitement for me. Would I get rid of terrorpene or sambas if they had common forms no I wouldn't. Would I still go out and tame them if common forms existed pre tame of them. Yes I would.
