take-off: vertical/nosedive/horizontal????

Unread post by Sukurachi »

I know I'm not the only one to have this minor issue, but I'm wondering if there's any known trigger that causes it.

I am standing on perfectly flat ground.

I hit my "mount" macro.

I press the spacebar to get off the ground.

I move forward.

I promptly go into crash-dive mode.

oddly, if I only went a few inches off the ground and my mount subsequently touches the ground while in flight, I can spacebar-jump and be perfectly horizontal again. Otherwise, I need to adjust my horizontal inclination.

It's just strange that from a perfectly flat surface, "launching" into flight puts me in a nose-dive.
And it doesn't even always seem to do it!

Which is why I'm wondering: what triggers this odd behaviour on a mount?

Hmm, all I can think of is that perhaps your Pitch is set oddly. The default key bindings for pitch are Insert/Delete I believe. If you hold those down while flying in the air you can do a loop. Perhaps there's some setting that's caused you to be at a tilted angle when taking off? I'm not too sure though, I've never had something like that happen myself.

The strange thing is, it's not ALWAYS going to happen. There are times I can just gracefully leap into the air and fly away.
And then there's those embarrassing times where I gracefully leap into the air and promptly plant my glitter pony's nose firmly in the ground

That sounds really strange. Are you able to take screenshots?
The first thing that came to mind was eventual camera settings, but if it face-plants right after taking off, that doesn't sound like it.

Well, maybe "face plant" is a TAD exaggerated... but it just dives.
Like I said, it's also not a consistent behaviour.
There are plenty of times I can launch into the air and be horizontal.
It seems to decide that I actually want to dive-bomb instead of fly horizontal at the worst possible moments...

At first I thought that maybe the terrain itself was to blame. Like being on a slope would make you mount up and launch horizontal to the actual ground. But it does this on inclines as well as on perfectly flat surfaces. And again, it's an erratic behaviour. I can't seem to replicate it with any consistency.

I've had this happen a couple of times... and have no explanation. I do get quite often, when I take off and start to rise, when I try to level, the flight goes right back down. I normally just do a running land and then take off again where it will fly right. I do not know why it does that.

When you use the right mouse button to adjust your direction when running/standing on the ground you change the pitch as well. Meaning that if you do that, and don't look at your char from perfectly behind, it'll happen.

it seems to happen to me whenever i pull into a nosedive and dive into the ground and land that way. If I don't even myself out before the next takeoff then the next time i mount up/takeoff i end up smacking right back into the ground again.

rather frustrating when your flagged and running from 85s! :?

I use [X] to lower my altitude, [spacebar] to rise. I rarely use my mouse to direct my mount. I am (sad, I know) a keyboard turner.

I will test out a number of hypotheses regarding "previous status before landing" and get back to you on the results.

I had this issue when I didn't use a mouse... Apparently there's a mac issue (from what I've heard at least) where you'll slowly dive when autoflying when you're adjusting your direction with x/space and arrow keys. I couldn't tell you if mine still does it though, since I always use a mouse when I play now.

Ok, I've just done my Org. cooking daily on a bunch of toons.

I take off from the quest giver, hit the space bar, and fly perfectly straight (just about the only thing I DO that's straight).

I fly over to the Goblin quarter and start stealin...errr... gathering the required materials.

I hop on my horsey, hit the space bar and fly perfectly straight (again).
So far so good, twice.

Grab the rest of my pilfered supplies... and while standing next to the center shack in the Goblin quarter (where all the Trolls are), hit my mount macro, and press the space bar... and SMOOOOOOOOSH. My Sparkle Pony leaves a sparkly streak across the wooden floor.

It did this with every single one of my toons. (repeated the experiment 8 times)

On a few tries, I tried walking a few feet with my mount before taking off... and SMOOOOOOOOOOOSH.

So, any ideas?
Sparkle Pony has this big ugly red smudge on his nose where it scraped on some gravel.

I don't USE my mouse when flying.
I fly with the arrow keys.
And I'm aware of the attitude controls using the mouse.

However, the issue here isn't that I'm using the mouse to steer.
The problem comes from:
1) being at a standstill, unmounted
2) hitting "mount macro" to call flying mount
3) pressing "spacebar" to rise into the air
4) pressing "forward arrow" to move forward
5) scraping horsey off the asphalt

As I said, normally, I can just hop into the air and press forward with no problem.
However sometimes, like today in the example I cited above (doing dailies in Orgrimmar), this annoying nose-dive bug hits.
