I just tamed Banthalos, first on the server : )

I didnt use either of the suggested methods, i used a different one.
I stood on the platform that surrounds the statue, its a half circle shape.
I flew up to the minimum distance that i could shoot him, then when he was in range, dismounted and shot. I landed with not very much health, but alive.
As soon as you land drop and ice trap, he should fly to you and get trapped. Then tame as you normally would.
Good luck to anyone hoping to tame him!
