Is their rarities really the same? From what I have seen and heard from others, Karkin seems to be much more common a spawn then Skarr.

It really depends on what server, and your luck. They share spawn points, and timers, but either can spawn. Some servers get a ton of Karkin, others are pretty equal, and some are Skarr overloaded, it all depends.
