Apparently hunters are incapable of skill

Unread post by CrystalKitten »

So, the STRANGEST thing just happened. Me and some guildies were running a level 80 through some regular cata dungeons. All of a sudden... we'll call him Mr X(fake name to prevent naming and shaming)... All of a sudden Mr X blurts out in guild chat "Wow... i just lost all respect for you guys... i can't believe i didnt realize this before..." and then gquits with NO explanation...

So, I whisper him, saying that nobody has any clue what he's talking about. Just because as an officer in my guild, I'd like to know what upset him so much, so we can try and fix it.

His response? "u guys are both hunters... my GM was a hunter...
Me: "... okay? so?"
Mr X: "basically....you guys have no skill and you were my superiors"

Now.. this was a level 33... I don't think I've ever grouped with them.. Plus, I don't ONLY play hunters (neither does the GM, their main on this server is just currently a hunter). I consider myself decent. I've done all the heroics, soloed some fun stuff. I can pull about 12-13k dps when slacking off... So I WAS going to ask what makes him think we have no skill.... but he'd apparently put me on ignore.

Now, obviously, not the kind of person we want in the guild anyways (especially after that outburst)... but.. WOW... just.... wow.. That's the only response I can think of.

The really funny thing is our guild has a LOT of hunters. Most of the active players have at least a hunter alt. There's been times when 7 or 8 of us are online at once (we're still a small guild) pretty much all of us on hunters... So if it took them that long to realize that some of the key players were hunters, or that we had a lot of hunters.... Not only is he a bit of a jerk... But he must not be the sparkliest tool in the shed.

Not to mention we're constantly talking about pets, and all the pretties I've tamed (some members are impressed with my collection, heh), and some of the other rare-hunter hunters have tamed, or rehoming...

No skill? *snort*

I would hope that this was their first toon.. otherwise they are a complete idiot. Of every raid I've run a well-equipped, skilled hunter, has always been the top 3 in terms of dps, and more often then not is the top in dps overall.

Of all my hunters, when I run instances, pretty much at any level-with or without my heirloom items on-I tend to be the top one or two in dps in random groups. Even when I'm on my druid or shammy, a hunter is usually top in dps of the instance.

Yeah, I'm always amazed at how we are so unskilled yet tend to be top in dps where we go.

It's because we're just that good.

But, in all seriousness, I've never met a hunter that's terribad. I've seen hunters in worse condition, including myself as my DPS tends to be lower, but that just means I need to Dummy myself in Org or Silvermoon or somewhere where I can see where I'm going wrong. Despite the time I spend in this game, I really don't do a lot of dungeons, unless I'm after VP/JP or helping out with a guild run.

Personally I think it's harder to goof up on a hunter than it is to on a, say, warrior or shaman or something. It is an easy class, otherwise Blizzard wouldn't recommend it for beginners on the character creation page. It comes with everything you need to get started, really - a tank, an eventual aggro drop, and if you go down a certain tree, a HoT. It's a very attractive class for people new to the game, is what I mean, and I think that makes it look as if it takes no skill to play.

I can't say I do a lot of dungeons anymore - the "OMG TOP DEEPS LOL LOOK AT ME I AM SO PRO" argument has disgusted me to the point where I've dropped dungeons entirely and stick with solo questing. But I do remember a person who got jumped in Trade pretty swiftly saying something along the lines of "Hunters are easy to play, but hard to play right". Was it true? I can't say. I'm not pro. ;)

Well, I can kind of see how they might be considered a good starter class. But the fact that this guy quit because we like hunters.. or because of the class of the GM and officers... despite NEVER having played with us.. or the fact that we DO have other 85s.... trying to think of a good analogy, but I'm drawing a blank...

Overall, I'd say that's accurate, especially in regards to PvP. The basics are easy to get, but to really master the class, you have to be really really focused.

Mr X sounds like the type of dope who thinks he's just a scruffy little genius, and communicates in short, obscure info-bursts hoping the other person will take the bait and ask him to explain himself. At which point he will preen and strut upon his newfound podium, deigning to provide a bit more info, waiting for you to ask for more clarification, all the while working himself into a nerdy lather at having to "spell it out" for the n00b who is wasting his precious time...

Gaahhhh... can't stand that type. :x

That's why I don't bite when they play their little games. If anything I'll razz them back with some short, random comment of my own... a lot of times they fall for it and lose at their own game.

But that's because I'm not a guild officer - you have to be friendly and stuff. Not sure how you guys manage to be nice to people like that, but somehow you do, so a tip of the hat to you... :)

There's a long, long standing bias that a) if you're bad at hunter you're a complete ironclad moron with no hope of salvation and if you're b) good at hunter, you're just capable of facerolling with slight accuracy. I mean, I got this same attitude all the way back in vanilla. (You know, when you couldn't fling traps at a distance, or hell, even lay them while in -combat-...)

'Huntard' was I think the first class slur that was invented in WoW. Why? Dunno, really. But it's deeply ingrained, and as you've seen, even now the douchebags of the game still tout it as ironclad fact. I would say you dodged a bullet with him ragequitting, though... People who act like that are just going to end up being a crateload of problems in the future.

Oh, if only.

I still get a lot of attitude like 'yeah, you get crazy numbers but you're a HUNTER, pff, don't mean anything if you don't play a REAL CLASS'. Because hunter isn't a real class, y'see.

So... obviously you can still have skill as a hunter.. but Blizzard isn't helping.. Apparently even THEY admit hunters are easy mode!

From the book "To Do Today" in Dalaran, last page:
Q: My co-workers all seem to be doing more damage than I do. How can I catch up with them without looking like a dufus?

A: It's not all about damage. You can aid your group in other ways - Arcane Refreshment spells are a good example. If that doesn't pan out, perhaps a career in the arcane arts isn't the right career path for you. We hear that hunting is easy!

I've always understood that to be a joke, but like so many people have reiterated... being passable enough at hunter that you don't feel aggravated and infuriated by other people kicking your ass is easier than most classes. You don't die much while questing, for example.

But being GOOD at hunter is, in my mind, no easier than being good at warrior or good at mage. Hunter has a 'lower low-bar' than a lot of classes, but the 'high bar' is about the same.
